Grandmother: Police Ignored Report, 'Disrespected' Amber
Sheila Welch Says Dog Team Picked Up Trail 6 Months Ago

POSTED: 4:56 pm PST March 8, 2010
UPDATED: 6:24 pm PST March 8, 2010

Amber Dubois' grandmother said she is bouncing between sorrow and anger -- with that anger directed at the Escondido Police Department. "She should be a sophomore in high school now. But she's not," said Sheila Welch, Amber's grandmother.

Welch told 10News she's a mixed-bag of emotions. She's sad for Amber, but angry at the police because she said they did not consider information gathered by privately hired scent-sniffing dogs. "They disrespected my granddaughter by ignoring the report," said Welch. The report showed the dogs had followed Amber's trail from Escondido to the Pala area last August.

Platts said her team started their search at Amber's Escondido house the first night they were in San Diego County. The dogs took them from the home, past the school and onto Interstate 15. The team put the dogs in a truck, drove north and got out at every exit to search. "Then we just started working down the interstate until we reached the Pala exit. At that point the dogs wanted to exit the road," said Platts. The team worked their way inland to a spot near where police found Amber's remains. "It's always questionable when it's an asset that's brought in by the family. They're held a little bit suspect by the police versus an asset the police department themselves have brought in," said Platts.

Platts said Escondido police never responded to her report. "If they considered us credible, I don't know. I didn't quite get that feeling that they were very interested in what we had done, though," said Platts.

Amber Dubois' parents upset with investigator
March 8, 2010 at 11:31 a.m., updated March 8, 2010 at 12:52 p.m.
<snipped>
The parents of Escondido teenager Amber Dubois say they are angry about misinformation being spread by a private investigator the family hired shortly after Amber disappeared in February 2009. Amber’s father, Moe Dubois, said Monday that neither he nor Amber’s mother, Carrie McGonigle, have spoken to private investigator Bill Garcia since their daughter’s skeletal remains were discovered Saturday near Pala. “Carrie is livid that he is going out and speaking on behalf of the family,” Dubois said. “We haven’t talked to him.”[

Garcia told The San Diego Union-Tribune in a phone interview Sunday afternoon that the tip leading investigators to Amber’s remains did not come from John Albert Gardner III, the man now facing murder charges in connection with the death of 17-year-old Poway High School senior Chelsea King.

A few minutes later, when he was asked again about the tip and how he knew it didn’t come from Gardner, Garcia said, “I talked to someone who knows it first-hand.” He said he couldn’t say any more without getting into trouble. Garcia changed his story when contacted Monday.

“What I said was somebody close to the family called me and said they had found Amber’s body near the Riverside County line,” he said. “That’s all they told me. I then said it’s my belief that the tip did not come from Gardner. That was just my opinion. I haven’t been told that.”

Garcia said he has not worked for the family in almost a year but has been doing some investigating on his own and feeding all of his findings to a contact with the Escondido police. He said he gave interviews on Sunday only to let parents know they still have to guard their children from predators because it’s unclear if Amber’s killer is still out there.

'We Will Never Heal': Amber's Parents
Updated 5:46 PM PST, Mon, Mar 8, 2010
<snipped>
The parents of Escondido teenager Amber Dubois say they will never heal completely but believe changes in the legal system will help them deal with their loss. “I was walking around in a fog all day,” said Dubois about Saturday, when he learned his 14-year old daughter, missing since February 2009, would never return home.

Escondido police announced they were acting on a tip when they found skeletal remains near Pala Saturday morning. By late Saturday, dental records had helped investigators positively identify those remains as belonging to Amber. “I have closure,” Amber's mother Carrie McGonigle said Monday. “It’s not the outcome that we wanted but you know what, we know where she’s at. I would hate to go through life not knowing.” “We know she’s safe now, she’s not being hurt anymore but there’s still a lot of justice that needs to be done,” said Dubois.

Amber's parents, divorced but united in the need to find their daughter, said that they've grown closer over the difficult year and they now vow to fight together to see changes so that other parents will not suffer the same pain. “We have a big fight ahead of us,” he said. The two say they have reacted differently to the many developments in their daughter's case. When one is up, the other is down. When one is having a bad day, the other is having a good one.

McGonigle drove to the area near where her daughter's body was found Sunday night, "just because that's what I do," she said. They plan to attend the vigil Monday night at Escondido High School. "People have been so good to us," said Dubois. "Their hearts have gone out to us over and over again, all year long.

ESCONDIDO: Somber mood at Amber's high school; vigil set for 6:30 p.m.
Posted: March 8, 2010 9:25 am
<snipped>
Students, staff and teachers filed into Escondido High School on Monday morning, with the grim discovery of Amber Dubois' body heavy on their minds. The bookish high school freshman vanished while walking to the school Feb. 13, 2009, under similar dark rain clouds that drenched the suburban campus Monday morning. She was 14. Law enforcement discovered her skeletal remains in Pala on Saturday.

A vigil, organized by Amber's family, is scheduled for 6:30 p.m. Monday at the high school. The public is asked to bring its own candles.

Teachers spoke with their classes at length about Amber and issued safety reminders, students said. The school also observed a moment of silence in honor of the teen Monday morning.

Classmates also wrote messages on large banners that will be presented to Amber's family. "It's just so hard to believe that someone so alive could have their life taken," said Karen Truong, 14, a freshman at the school who knew Amber from middle school. Truong and others observed growing sets of memorials to Amber along north Broadway in front of the school. Hand-written notes, candles, stuffed animals, including Amber's favorite animal, a wolf, lined the sidewalk.

Near the school's football field, close to where Amber was last spotted alive, three teens from Escondido High's student government placed plastic cups along a fence spelling out the words "Aren't we worth protecting?"

Escondido High School students console each other and sign remembrances as they gathered at a memorial for 14 year-old Amber Dubois out front of the school Monday. Amber's skeletal remains were found in a remote area of the Pala Indian Reservation on Saturday.

Police: John Gardner Suspected in Amber Dubois Murder
6:53 PM PST, March 8, 2010
<snipped>
Police now say convicted sex offender John Gardner is the focus of the investigation into the murder of Escondido teenager Amber Dubois. The slain teen's skeletal remains were found Saturday in Pala, a small town in the Pala Indian Reservation, which stretches more than 12,000 acres in north San Diego County. Authorities say an unspecified tip led them to a remote area west of Pala Temecula Road, about three miles north of the historic Pala Mission.

There is a single-lane asphalted road that leads up a steep mountain and then over a hill. The grave appears to be out of sight over the hill.

On Monday, Escondido police Lt. Craig Carter issued a statement saying, "The Amber Dubois crime scene is still being processed and John Albert Gardner III remains a focus of the investigation."

Amber Dubois' body is found a year after she disappeared
Police say the teen's skeletal remains were found in north San Diego County. The suspected slaying of another young girl nearby may have helped lead investigators to Amber.

March 8, 2010
<snipped>
A yearlong search for a missing 14-year-old girl from Escondido has ended with the discovery of her skeletal remains in a remote area of northern San Diego County, police said. Amber Dubois, who disappeared last year on her way to school, was identified through dental records after police found her remains Saturday in rugged terrain near Pala, Calif. The discovery was announced Sunday by Escondido Police Chief Jim Maher at a brief news conference.

Police had refocused attention on the Dubois case after a registered sex offender was arrested last week in connection with the suspected murder of Chelsea King, a high school senior from nearby Poway. The suspect, John Albert Gardner III, lived a couple of miles from where Amber vanished near Escondido High School. Maher did not disclose whether Gardner, who is being held without bail, is linked to the Dubois case. He said an unspecified lead led investigators to the remains.

Maurice Dubois, 40, of Buena Park expressed mixed feelings at the time, wanting closure but hoping that a "monster" like Gardner wasn't linked to his daughter's case. "I'm living a nightmare. I keep trying to wake up out of it, but it's not happening," Dubois said last week.

Gardner's preliminary hearing is scheduled for next week.

Amber's parents: Turn anguish into action
Monday, March 8, 2010 at 8 p.m.
<snipped>
The parents of slain Escondido teenager Amber Dubois called for stiffer penalties and tougher enforcement of existing laws to protect children from predators as they joined more than 1,000 mourners for a candlelight vigil Monday night. The vigil held in a courtyard at Escondido High School came hours after police said the convicted sex offender accused of killing Poway teenager Chelsea King remains the focus of the investigation into Amber’s slaying.

Moe Dubois, Amber’s father, asked for those gathered to turn their anguish into action. “Please take a minute for every tear you have ever shed for Amber, for Chelsea, and for any other child who has suffered at the hands of these predators, and come back tomorrow and take just as many minutes of action in our fight to protect our children,” he said. “Hope will never sleep.”

Amber’s mother, Carrie McGonigle, said: “We do need to make changes and hopefully with the support of all the parents, we’ll be able to change the laws to make things safe.”

After the parents spoke, the crowd sang “Amazing Grace” softly as they held their candles in the air.

Expert Weighs In On Likelihood Of Local Serial Killer
POSTED: 7:09 pm PST March 8, 2010
UPDATED: 7:12 pm PST March 8, 2010
<snipped>
Two murder investigations with two very similar stories are now in full stride. While local authorities are saying very little, they did bridge the gap between the Chelsea King case and the Amber Dubois case by declaring sex offender John Garder -- accused in the death of King -- a focus of the Dubois investigation.

Sheldon Zhang, who studies criminal patterns at San Diego State University, told 10News, "Kidnapping, kidnapping teenagers in this case, Chelsea King's case … it's a sign there's a sex offender out there, not just random serial killers." Zhang said by looking at the information available, it can be predicted that both crimes were committed by people who wanted to do more than just kill their victims. He said if they just wanted to kill, they may have picked someone other than teenage girls. "There are a lot easier targets," Zhang said.

Zhang said it's easy to look at the King and Dubois cases and think they are connected. While that may or may not be true, he said what is true is that whoever killed both girls has similar taste in victims. "Just look at their faces. They're in the prime age; they're prime targets for sex offenders. My hunch is that both cases involve sex offenders, but whether these two cases are connected, I have no idea," said Zhang.

Police: Gardner Focus Of Amber Dubois Investigation
Teen's Remains Found Over Weekend

POSTED: 2:40 pm PST March 8, 2010
UPDATED: 7:37 pm PST March 8, 2010
<snipped>
Police said they are eyeing John Albert Gardner III in the death of Amber Dubois, whose bones were found Saturday in a remote area of the Pala Indian Reservation.

A police statement did not elaborate on the investigation and only said the scene was still being processed. Police Lt. Craig Carter did not immediately respond to a phone message seeking further details. FBI teams worked under rainy skies during their search of the mountainous area of dense shrubs and rocks.

His public defender, Michael Popkins, did not respond to a phone message. Gardner was expected to make his second court appearance Tuesday in the potential death penalty case.

Police have not revealed how they learned the location of Amber's remains, saying it was part of the ongoing investigation. Amber's mother, Carrie McGonigle, also declined to say what led authorities to the remains.

Police have not revealed how they learned the location of Amber's remains, saying it was part of the ongoing investigation. Amber's mother, Carrie McGonigle, also declined to say what led authorities to the remains.

However, she said she was grateful for the sense of closure after the long hunt for her daughter. "I'm managing," McGonigle said in a brief interview. "It was a roller coaster the last year and now we have closure, which is more than a lot of parents have."

Like Chelsea's parents, McGonigle said she planned to become active in efforts to prevent attacks on other children. She said she was busy preparing for a candlelight vigil for her daughter Monday night. Brent and Kelly King shared their grief with Amber's family. "We have spoken with the Dubois family and our hearts go out to them in this time of deep sadness," the Kings said in a statement. "We share their indescribable grief for the loss of Amber's precious young life."

A candlelight vigil was held Monday at Escondido High School for 14-year-old Amber Dubois, the San Diego County girl whose remains were found more than a year after she vanished while walking to school.

The Escondido girl disappeared on Feb. 13, 2009. Authorities say a tip led them to dig on the Pala Indian Reservation, where her skeletal remains were found Saturday.

Disappearance of Leticia still haunts many
Young girl’s abduction in ’89 brought national attention

Tuesday, March 9, 2010 at 12:03 a.m.
<snipped>
The discovery of Amber Dubois’ skeletal remains along a remote road near the Pala Indian Reservation this past weekend brought back painful memories of a similar discovery in the same brush-filled canyon 19 years ago today. Leticia Hernandez, 7, had been missing for 15 months when a caretaker working on property off Pala Temecula Road found a human skull. Dental records from Leticia, an Oceanside second-grader, were a match. The discovery that day, March 9, 1991, ended a search that had captured the nation’s attention as sightings of the black-haired girl — usually in the company of a blond-haired couple in a maroon sedan — spread across the country. The case was featured on the TV shows “America’s Most Wanted” and “Unsolved Mysteries” and was listed for a year as the nation’s top child-abduction case by the National Center for Missing and Exploited Children. It even spawned a song, “Leticia We Love You,” written by an Oceanside police detective.

For those touched by Leticia’s case, the discovery of remains identified as Amber, a 14-year-old Escondido High student missing for 13 months, was like the tearing away of scar tissue. It hurt. “That’s really eerie,” said Doug Sebastian, founder of KinderVision, a nonprofit child-safety organization that sprang up from the Leticia case. “That’s pretty isolated out there. Unfortunately, we’ve got a north San Diego County dumping ground for missing kids.”

Leticia’s killer has never been caught. A registered sex offender who was 40 at the time and lived a block away was reportedly the subject of a federal grand jury investigation in the weeks after her remains were found. The only apparent connection between her case and the current investigation is the proximity of the remains — Leticia’s on the east side of the road, Amber’s on the west — roughly two miles south of the Riverside County line.

Leticia lived about 25 miles away, in an apartment in the 1300 block of Bush Street, a block east of Interstate 5. On Dec. 16, 1989, two days after her 7th birthday, she was playing in the front yard about 5 p.m. while her mother went to a nearby laundry room. When her mother returned 10 minutes later, the girl was gone. The medical examiner eventually concluded she had died within three months of her abduction. Leticia had five siblings when she disappeared. Attempts to reach them for comment yesterday were unsuccessful. Her mother died of cancer in February 1998.

*Much More At Link!

LETICIA HERNANDEZ TIMELINE
*Dec. 16, 1989: Leticia, 7, disappears while playing in the front yard of an Oceanside apartment building.
*Dec. 27, 1989: Police report a sighting of Leticia with a blond-haired man in a Buckman Springs rest stop. More sightings follow across the country.
*Feb. 4, 1990: “America’s Most Wanted” airs its second segment on the case, generating more leads. Police ultimately look at 2,600 tips.
*March 9, 1991: A skull is found along Highway S16; dental records match it to Leticia.
*March 23, 1991: About 450 people attend a memorial service.

Vigil Held For Amber Dubois
Updated 7:04 AM PST, Tue, Mar 9, 2010
<snipped>
A sea of lights twinkled in the night as more than 1500 people held candles at Escondido High School to remember 14-year old Amber Dubois. "She always had something funny say even if she was sad, she would always make you happy, that's just how she was,"said Escondido High School student Samantha Campos. "It's really scary because it's so close to home,"said classmate Cherise McCoy. "It could have been anybody and it's tragic that it had to be somebody like her."

Many people came from other areas of San Diego County to take part in the candlelight vigil including Leah Wilson. She lives in Poway and her son went to school with Chelsea King. "That's why we're here tonight, to let them know that we support them, we love them and we don't want this to happen to another child,"said Wilson with tears in her eyes.

"We do need to make changes and hopefully with the support of all the parents, we’ll be able to change the laws to make things safe," said Amber's mother Carrie Mcgonigle. Amber's father told everyone that it would be his life's work to make sex offender laws tougher. "Three years ago, we the people of California voted Jessica's Law in, to date the ACLU has dragged it into court claiming it unconstitutional and that these predators have rights," Dubois said.

On Tuesday, students and faculty are being encouraged to wear the color red, in honor of Amber.

Maurice Dubois (doo-BWAH') and Carrie McGonigle spoke on a chilly Monday night before the somber crowd at Escondido High School, near the spot where their daughter Amber Dubois vanished on Feb. 13, 2009, on her way to school. They called for laws to better protect children from predators.

Maurice Dubois evoked his daughter's favorite animal, the wolf. He said wolves hunt together to catch their prey and that parents must band together to protect their children. McGonigle said she worries every time she sees a child walking alone.

Police say a registered sex offender charged with murdering another teen girl last month is a focus of the investigation into Amber's death.
