Hundreds turn out at vigil for Amber Dubois whose body was found near Temecula
Candles and flowers multiplied, accompanied by notes. “Someone so special can never be forgotten,” one read, and another read, “You will be remembered.”

After school let out Monday, Escondido High School was like so many other schools; sneakers squeaked on the gymnasium floor, student athletes jogged across campus, and teens squealed and laughed in the school’s parking lot. Just outside the high school’s gated grounds, though, was a reminder: Despite signs of life, Monday was not like any other day at Escondido High School. A curbside memorial grew for 15-year-old Amber Dubois along the south gate of the school. Candles and flowers multiplied, accompanied by notes. “Someone so special can never be forgotten,” one read, and another read, “You will be remembered.” A small, stuffed white lamb – a symbol of innocence – was tucked behind a tightly-bound bouquet of yellow daffodils.

Students struggled with the grim news Monday, said 17-year-old Nathan Pedersen, a junior and a friend of Amber’s. “It’s hard to accept,” Pedersen said. Pedersen, who runs track for Escondido High School, said he’s running this week’s meet “for Amber and Chelsea.”

“In cases like this, we talk about closure,” said Escondido Police Chief Jim Maher. “I don’t think anyone who experiences something like this ever truly gets closure … [But] If not closure, we can certainly get justice.” Maher told the crowd the Escondido Police Department, the San Diego County Sheriff’s Department, the FBI and other agencies will “continue to do everything else to bring this investigation to a successful resolution and prosecution.”

Maurice “Moe” Dubois, Amber’s dad, and Carrie McGonigle, Amber’s mom, thanked the crowd Monday for their well wishes, and authorities and volunteers for searching for their daughter for more than a year. They also encouraged parents to educate children about safe behavior. “As parents, we need to make a change for the protection of our children,” Moe Dubois said.

Mourners Remember Amber Dubois At Candlelight Vigil
March 9, 2010
<snipped>
For the second night in less than a week, hundreds of mourners gathered for a candlelight vigil to grieve the loss of a young San Diego County girl. This time it was for 14-year-old Amber Dubois.

Amber’s parents, Maurice "Moe" Dubois and Carrie McGonigle, addressed the crowd and urged them to turn their tears into action in the fight against sexual predators. "Please take a minute for every tear you have ever shed for Amber, for Chelsea and for any other child that has suffered at the hands of these predators," pleaded Dubois, "and come back tomorrow and take just as many minutes of action in our fight to protect our children." McGonigle said laws need to be changed. "I still see a lot of children walking by themselves and it scares me," she said

Gardner, 30, pleaded not guilty Wednesday to murdering Chelsea and raping or attempting to rape her, and attempting to rape another woman in December, a potential death penalty case. A spokesman for the San Diego County district attorney's office, Paul Levikow, declined to comment Sunday on the investigation into Amber's death.

Tracing Amber's last steps
8:55 AM PST, March 9, 2010
<snipped>
When 14-year-old Amber Dubois left her home for school on Friday, February 13, 2009, no one knew it would be the last time she would ever walk that route or be seen alive again.

"The search for Amber has come to a close. Our hearts go out to family and friends. It is a loss for our school and community," said Escondido High School Principal Rich Watkins.

"Amber's been lost to us," Watkins added. "She'll live on in the memory of our staff and students as we try to move forward during this difficult time of healing."

Escondido police found the remains of Amber Dubois in Pala on Saturday. Monday, family, friends and people who never knew her, stopped by her high school to leave flowers, tokens, poems and their love at a makeshift memorial.

"I couldn't sleep last night, so early in the morning I got up and wrote a poem and dedicated it to this precious student," said Ivan Marjanovic, a retired Escondido High School custodian. "I'm sure everybody will miss her. Not only Escondido High School but the entire community and I'm sure the entire nation."

Jailed suspect remains focus of investigation
Parents call for strict laws against predators

Tuesday, March 9, 2010 at 12:03 a.m.
<snipped>
The parents of slain Escondido teenager Amber Dubois asked mourners last night to turn their anguish into action by pushing for tougher penalties and stricter laws to protect children from predators. Hours earlier, Escondido police said the investigation into Amber’s death remains focused on convicted sex offender John Albert Gardner III.

Amber’s parents, Moe Dubois and Carrie McGonigle, joined more than 1,000 people at Escondido High School for a candlelight vigil in memory of their daughter, whose remains were found Saturday in a wooded hillside in Pala after a 13-month search.

Escondido police say Gardner, who was charged last week with raping and murdering Poway teenager Chelsea King, continues to be a suspect in Amber’s case. Escondido Police Chief Jim Maher told the hushed crowd last night that there’s never closure in a case like Amber’s but that their support helps the family heal. “The Escondido Police Department, San Diego Sheriff’s Department, FBI and all the other agencies have and will continue to do everything else to bring this investigation to a resolution and successful prosecution,” Maher said.

Chelsea’s parents, Kelly and Brent King, released a brief statement yesterday. “We have spoken with the Dubois family and our hearts go out to them in this time of deep sadness,” they said. “We share their indescribable grief for the loss of Amber’s precious young life.”

Amber's Parents Ask for Help for Other Missing Children
Last Update: 3/09 9:30 pm
<snipped>
The parents of 14-year-old Amber Dubois are not answering questions about whether they believe the suspect in the Chelsea King case was responsible for their daughter's disappearance. But after John Gardner's court appearance on Tuesday, Amber's father made a plea.

"There are many children," Maurice Dubois told the media. "You have the power to bring these children home."

Amber's father asked the media to help find other missing children, like Michael Guidry, who disappeared around Thanksgiving.
According to published reports, investigators suspect the 16-year-old was a runaway.

Forensic scientists look for answers
Many variables confront investigations of deaths of 2 North County teens

Thursday, March 11, 2010 at 12:04 a.m.
<snipped>
Forensic scientists investigating the deaths of two North County teens already know the “who” — Chelsea King and Amber Dubois. Now they’re focused on the “when” and the “how.”

Each case presents its own challenges, and the answers aren’t likely to be as simple — or come as quickly — as the TV franchise “CSI” makes the process appear. “There are just so many variables,” said Dr. Harry Bonnell, a former San Diego County deputy medical examiner now in private practice. Variables such as where the bodies were buried, how deeply and for how long.

From a forensic standpoint, a case like Chelsea’s would probably be pretty straightforward, said Bonnell, who performed about 7,000 autopsies during his 20-year career as a medical examiner and now reviews about 150 cases yearly, mostly as a criminal-defense expert.

Amber’s case is more complicated. “Skeletal remains are among the most difficult, if not the most difficult, cases we have,” said Greg Wyatt, Sacramento County coroner.

The site typically becomes an archaeological dig, excavated layer by layer. Nothing is removed until it is fully exposed, photographed and mapped. Sides of a makeshift grave are examined for marks that might reveal what kind of tool was used. Soil under the skeleton is tested to see if decomposition happened there or if the remains had been moved. The work often takes more than a week.

convicted sex offender charged with murdering one California teenager and under investigation for another killing violated his parole by moving too close to a school but was allowed to remain free, according to records obtained Thursday by The Associated Press.

Had John Albert Gardner III been returned to prison in 2007 he would have been evaluated for commitment to a state mental hospital as a sexually violent predator. He also would have qualified for wearing an electronic tracking device for the rest of his life.

"It was just an incompetent decision that didn't protect public safety," said state Sen. George Runner, who wrote Jessica's Law, the sex offender law approved by voters in 2006.

Ex-friend: Gardner sexually abused and suicidal over breakup
Posted: Mar 12, 2010 3:03 PM EST
Updated: Mar 13, 2010 11:18 AM EST
<snipped>
Jennifer Brandt and Gardner weren't close in high school, but became friends shortly after they graduated from the Class of 1997 at Rim of the World high school near Lake Arrowhead, California. "He was a fun and crazy guy," Brandt said.

That was the John Gardner who Jennifer Brandt thought she knew, until his 2000 conviction for molesting and assaulting a 13-year-old girl. "Pretty much all of his friends were hurt and betrayed by him after that. We stopped all contact with him," Brandt said.

She hasn't spoken to Gardner since then. In fact, she says she hasn't even thought of his name in years, until he made national headlines. "It was shocking. This was a guy I hung out with, I stayed the night on his couch," she said.

Gardner also threatened suicide a couple years after high school when his then girlfriend Jennifer Tripp dumped him, said Brandt. Tripp is a couple years younger than Gardner and was still in school at the time of the breakup, according to Brandt.

"He missed her and he would cry about it and there was nothing left to live for without her," Brandt recalled Gardner telling her.

Brandt also believes Tripp – the girlfriend who broke Gardner's heart -- resembles both Chelsea King and Amber Dubois. "From the photos that I see… the blue eyes, the straight hair… they all look like the girl he dated in high school and broke his heart," Brandt said.

REGION: Gardner drove 3 cars, was stopped several times
Murder suspect cited for marijuana possession, traffic violations

Posted: March 12, 2010 10:03 pm
<snipped>
Over the last three years, registered sex offender John Albert Gardner III was stopped at least seven times in San Diego and Riverside counties for traffic violations.

He drove at least three separate cars, including one matching a vehicle involved in a 2009 Lake Elsinore attempted child abduction, according to officials and court records.

According to a citation from a June 11, 2009, traffic stop, Gardner was driving a gold 1999 Pontiac Grand Prix north of Escondido. (A car of similar make and model was seized Thursday from an Escondido junk yard and taken to a city holding facility.) He was cited for driving without insurance on Interstate 15 near West Lilac Road. The gold Grand Prix matches the description of a vehicle used in an attempted child abduction reported on Oct. 28, 2009, in Lake Elsinore.

Court records also show Gardner was convicted of speeding in June 2008 and of a red-light violation in December 2006. Details of those cases, including the type of car he was driving and where, were not available Friday.

Gardner is listed as an Escondido resident, living at a Rock Springs East apartment complex, on the citations from November 2008 and June and April 2009.

The complex is less than two miles from Escondido High School. Amber Dubois vanished Feb. 13, 2009, while walking to the school. She was 14 at the time and a freshman.

In addition to the June 2009 stop, Gardner's other traffic violations include:
-- Jan. 30, 2010; cited for expired registration and no proof of insurance in Lake Elsinore during a DUI checkpoint. He was driving a black 2002 Nissan Sentra at Corydon and Cereal streets.

-- April 2, 2009; cited for having an open container of alcohol, driving without a license and without a license plate on the front of the car in Escondido on El Norte Parkway at North Iris Drive. Gardner was driving a gray four-door Ford Focus at the time. The year was not noted on the citation.

-- Nov. 19, 2008; cited for misdemeanor marijuana possession while driving in Oceanside near Buccaneer Park. Gardner was driving a white 2004 Chevrolet Silverado truck at the time.

Gardner not kept on short leash, documents show
Parole records indicate several infractions

Saturday, March 13, 2010 at 3:38 a.m.
<snipped>
When John Albert Gardner III walked out of a Central Valley prison a free man in September 2005, state prison officials classified the convicted sex offender as a “high control” parolee.

That meant agents should conduct two face-to-face checks on Gardner every month, including one unannounced visit to his home. It also meant surprise drug testing, mandatory counseling and a vigilance on the part of parole agents reserved for the worst offenders.

The 43 pages of parole records released by prison officials Thursday do not show whether those practices were followed in Gardner’s 2000 case, in which he pleaded guilty to molesting a 13-year-old Rancho Bernardo neighbor.

But they do show that agents and their supervisors passed up opportunity after opportunity to return Gardner to prison — an action that might have safeguarded the lives of two North County teenagers. He is charged in the killing of one and is a focus of the investigation of the other.

“This guy should never had been released from parole,” said Caroline Aguirre, a retired parole agent of 24 years who has been following the Gardner case. “This business of sex offenders not being properly supervised has been going on for years.”

Memorial for Amber to be held March 27
Saturday, March 13, 2010 at 4:05 a.m.
<snipped>
The family of Amber Dubois is planning a public memorial for the Escondido teenager March 27 at Escondido High School’s stadium. Amber, 14, disappeared while on her way to the school Feb. 13, 2009. Her remains were found March 6 near Pala.

Her father, Moe Dubois, said plans are still being made for the memorial. Principal Rich Watkins said yesterday that the family reserved the stadium for 1 p.m. “We’re just waiting to hear what they would like, and we’ll support them in any way we can,” Watkins said.

Dubois said the family will hold a private burial for Amber on March 26 in Escondido.

The memorial will be the second this month for a slain North County teen.

A memorial service for Chelsea King is being held today at Poway High School. She disappeared Feb. 25 while on a run at Rancho Bernardo Community Park. Her body was found at the edge of Lake Hodges five days later.

Giving Predators No Place to Hide
Among the brush clearing volunteers was the father of slain teen Amber Dubois

Updated 12:53 PM PST, Sat, Mar 13, 2010
<snipped>
In an effort to deprive predators and muggers of places to hide, volunteers helped clear overgrown brush from Kit Carson Park in Escondido Saturday morning.

Among those volunteers was the father of slain teen Amber Dubois.

“We’re making sure no predators can stalk their prey here,” Maurice Dubois said.

City Councilman Dick Daniels rounded up the volunteers to remove non-native brush and trim overgrown trees in the area, which is roughly 1 mile north of where Chelsea's body was discovered in a shallow grave near the shore of Lake Hodges.

POSTED: 11:27 am PDT March 14, 2010
<snipped>
A March 27 public memorial is planned for Amber Dubois in Escondido High School's stadium.

A cause of death has not been established, but 30-year-old John Albert Gardner III, who has been charged in the slaying of 17-year-old Chelsea King, is being investigated in connection with her disappearance and death.

It's expected Amber will be buried during a private ceremony in Escondido on March 26.

More than 5,000 people filled Poway High School's stadium for a memorial tribute to Chelsea Saturday. Among the crowd were Amber's parents, Moe Dubois and Carrie McGonigle.
