What's Ahead for Jaycee and Her Girls
Reporter: They're Moving to Her Mom's Home; Expert: Trauma Will Prove "Overwhelming"; It's "Critical" to Keep Them from Media
<snipped>
But psychologist and author Dr. Susan Bartell told Wragge, "It would probably be better for her to be in a different place, although for some people, it is better to go back, to revisit and to have the chance to work through a little bit what they had been through.

"I think what's most important, though, is for (Jaycee) her to really stay out of the spotlight -- I think that's critical -- and to really focus, for all three of them to focus on their healing, to get into counseling as soon as possible, and to stay away from the media as much as they possible can."

Bartell says that, even though Jaycee and her daughters may be dong well now, being reintroduced to society, and all that went on in that backyard, will be "overwhelming for all three of them, for her, for the kids, very overwhelming. The idea that they are having this reunion with their family is wonderful, but what's going to happen gradually, as the weeks and months go ahead, is the trauma is going to begin to overwhelm them, and it's going to take a very, very long time to heal from this. And they're going to need to gradually learn to adjust to being back home, to learn to live in a different kind of environment. They might even miss where they were for all those years, weirdly enough."

Not only that, Bartell continued, but, "I suspect it will be even hard for them to talk to their family about it. They're gonna want to protect their family and just let their family feel the joy of being with them. So, they're not even going to want to share that with hair family, and rather, (will) want it to talk to their therapists about it."

I wonder if this is a real picture of Jaycee now???

from what I understand this was another sketch of her from missing and exploited children.

However, Oprah recently told The Insider, “I want that interview. Obviously, like everyone else in this business, I have ‘my people’ working on that. Now, this is the truth… I really don’t care about getting interviews first and all that stuff… Really, truly, I don’t play that game. I feel like if somebody wants to talk to me, they will talk to me. If they don’t want to talk to me and they want to talk to whomever, fine. But this is the one I want. It’s the first time I have ever called up my producers and said, ‘Are we on this story? Because I want that interview!”

Oprah's Experience with Sexual Abuse:

At 9 and living in Milwaukee, Oprah and her siblings were left with their cousin to watch them, who was 19 at the time. It was this cousin who sexually abused Oprah for the first time -- she was raped, and then taken out for ice cream and told to keep it a secret -- which she did. She was again abused by a family friend and an uncle a couple of years later -- ongoing abuse that she kept silent.

I would rather see Oprah interview Jaycee than some of the other media types. I think she would be more compassionate and not push for the sake of ratings. I believe this is truly personal to Oprah. I just hope everyone waits until all three victims are ready to talk.

Garrido's twisted path led often to God

By Marcus Wohlsen and Paul Elias
Associated Press
Saturday September 12, 2009

"Three decades ago, a convicted kidnapper named Phillip Garrido stunned a Leavenworth Prison psychologist by turning down an offer most prisoners would leap to take — help with a transfer to a mental health facility.

Instead, Garrido opted to spend at least three more years doing hard time so he could complete his religious studies.

Along his twisted trail of drugs and sexual violence, records and interviews show that Garrido invoked God at every turn before he was arrested Aug. 26 and accused of kidnapping, raping and imprisoning Jaycee Dugard for 18 years in his backyard.

Again and again, he claimed he had found God. To a woman he had abducted and was about to rape. To the judge who sentenced him to 50 years behind bars for the crime. And later, to business clients and neighbors in Antioch, Calif."

Crime Info 101: Jaycee Dugard and Stockholm syndrome, what is it? Part 1
August 31, 12:05 AM
<snipped>
Upon release, Jaycee Dugard’s stepfather, Carl Probyn stated that she expressed feelings of guilt for bonding with her captor, Phillip Garrido. This comment lends credence to the possibility that Jaycee developed Stockholm syndrome. But just what is Stockholm syndrome and why does it exist? Jaycee Dugard is not the first kidnap victim to bond with or identify with her captors. The condition has its origins in Normalmstorg, Stockholm, after a robbery occurred in and bank employees were held hostage between August 23 and August 28, 1972.

In his book ‘The Betrayal Bond: breaking free of exploitive relationships’ author Patrick Barnes describes the origins of the syndrome. Barnes describes how the hostages were threatened and terrorized by their captives, yet at the same time, the captors would perform small acts of kindness. By the time the hostages were freed, after five and a half days of being held captive, authorities were amazed that the hostages sympathized with their captors. Additionally, the hostages exhibited signs of rage and contempt towards their rescuers. The hostages hugged, kissed, and declared their loyalty and support to their captors as they were being arrested.

Crime Info 101: Jaycee Dugard and Stockholm syndrome, what is it? Part 2
August 31, 2:09 AM
<snipped>
Part 2
It’s possible that the cause of Stockholm syndrome rests in the victim continually observing their captor to identify his or her likes, dislikes, preferences, and mannerisms to avoid confrontation. When a person is held in a captive situation, and threatened with extreme violence, torture, or death, human instinct is self-preservation. When the captor shows any signs of kindness to the victim, the hostage immediately senses that they can preserve their life by pleasing their captor. It is estimated that it takes between 3-4 days before the psychological mind shift occurs. At this point, the victim has essentially become brainwashed and is not ‘manipulating’ their captor through behaving in a manner that is acceptable, but rather has lost their own identity and has bonded through the Stockholm syndrome. Once the shift occurs, the victim no longer thinks about escape, but only pleasing and identifying with their captor to avoid torture, torment, or death.

Stockholm syndrome is seen in a number of different situations. In addition to kidnapped victims, abused women and children, it is often identified in prisoners of war, cult members, and survivors of incest. Essentially, any controlling or threatening relationship that presents grave fear and threat to an individual is breeding grounds for Stockholm syndrome. Since Jaycee Dugard was kidnapped at the age of 11, and more than likely raped at a very young age, it is highly possible that she developed Stockholm syndrome very early after being kidnapped.

Jaycee Lee Dugard abductor Phillip Garrido 'wanted cute blond girl'
Phillip Garrido selected the pretty blond girl with the gap-toothed grin as his prey during a "child shopping" trip because she looked "cute" , his wife Nancy has told investigators in California.
Published: 8:26PM BST 12 Sep 2009
<snipped>
She has described the chilling precision that went into the abduction as prosecutors put together the case for multiple charge of kidnapping and rape against the husband and wife. "That's the one I want," Garrido told her when he saw Jaycee in the resort town. "She's cute, but she's with the other kids. Let's come back later and get her."

Michael Cardoza, a Californian attorney and former prosecutor, relayed his coldly calculating words to The Sunday Telegraph after being briefed on Mrs Garrido's testimony by law enforcement contacts. Another source close to the investigation has confirmed that was her account.

What is known about her points to an existence of extreme contradictions. For Mrs Garrido worked as a respected nursing aide caring for the disabled and the old at the same time as she helped her husband keep Jaycee and her two daughters captive in their backyard.

She was born Nancy Bocanegra in Bexar County, Texas, in 1955, the oldest of several children in a Mexican-American family that moved to Denver, Colorado, in 1972. Some time after Garrido's 1977 incarceration at Leavenworth federal penitentiary in Kansas, she met him while she was visiting an uncle who was a fellow inmate.

They married when she was 26 and he was 30.

Mrs Garrido moved from Denver to Leavenworth in the mid-1980s to be nearer her husband, renting cheap one-bedroom apartments in converted townhouses. And she was already supporting herself by working as a nurse, judging from the CV she later presented. After Garrido's release, the couple moved in with his mother and step-father on Walnut Avenue, in a scruffy working-class neighbourhood of Antioch.

Her family in Denver - her divorced parents and at least four brothers still live there - were just as stunned when her role emerged 10 days ago. In the first comments by a relative, her brother David blamed Garrido for his sister's plight as he recalled a young woman who would go fishing and canoeing.

"I've got nothing bad to say about my sister," he said. "He [Garrido] turned her into that. She was normal until she hooked up with that guy."

The 46-year-old looked bleary-eyed and exhausted when he opened his front door in a Denver suburb. "My mother looks even worse," he said.

Jaycee Lee Dugard benefit brings rockers out of retirement
Saturday, September 12, 2009
<snipped>
A rock band including such South Shore notables as City Councilman Hal Cole is reuniting to play a set at next weekend's Jaycee Lee Dugard fundraiser.

The Movers will be among the bands performing at the “Building New Bridges” fundraiser on Sunday, Sept. 20, at the Horizon Casino Resort. The event will raise money for Dugard, the woman who reappeared late last month, 18 years after she was kidnapped from a South Lake Tahoe street. Dugard, who was 11 at the time, was on the way to her school bus stop.

The Movers played at an event for the family shortly after Dugard's abduction.

Funds raised will go to Dugard and her family through an account set up at Bank of the West by Soroptimist International of South Lake Tahoe. As of Thursday, the fund had collected about $18,000.

Chilling songs by accused kidnapper surface
Lyrics Phillip Garrido wrote may foreshadow Jaycee Dugard abduction
updated 9:10 a.m. ET, Wed., Sept . 9, 2009
<snipped>
His Aug. 26 arrest prompted former business associate Marc Lister to dig out some old CDs Garrido had given him three years ago in hopes of taking advantage of a connection of Lister’s in the music industry.

“I played them, and I listened very closely to the lyrics and realized he had written the songs, I believe, about Jaycee and her daughters and possibly some of his activities in the past — which is absolutely horrifying,” Lister told Matt Lauer on TODAY via satellite from Walnut Creek, Calif., Wednesday.

2ND HEADLINE:
‘Just horrified’
“Every pretty face, in the human race, being abused, and used as devices,” went one of Garrido’s songs, played in a frantic rockabilly style. Another lyric went, “For every little girl in the world, they want to be in love, you’re just the same, go play a game, just tell me that you want me, c’mon babe, I’m just insane, I’m crying out to you.”

“I have some friends that I’ve grown up with, and they’re in the recording business,” Lister explained. “He said he had a number of songs he had written and sung and played the instruments in the background. He wanted me to attempt to sell his music for him.”

After getting no nibbles toward a recording contract, Lister tried to return the recordings to Garrido, but he told Lister to keep them, saying, “Someday they will be worth millions.”

3RD HEADLINE:
Denies profit motive
After digging the CDs, containing 20 songs, out of storage, Lister and a friend began transcribing the lyrics. “I had really never played the songs in their entirety, nor did I try to decipher the lyrics in the songs,” he told Lauer.

What they heard made their jaws drop. “Oh little dumplin’, you know you’re something/your little butt’s cold, its cause is mental, adoring drives ’em absolutely wild,”went the lyrics of one song.

My intent is not to sell the songs on the CDs or anything else,” Lister asserted. “My intention was to use these CDs, the music on them, to generate donations toward Jaycee, her family and abused women and children. The money received would not benefit myself; it would go to a foundation.”

Songs written and performed decades ago by Phillip Garrido may reveal obsessions that led to the kidnapping and 18-year captivity of Jaycee Dugard, of which he is accused. Marc Lister, a Garrido business associate who came into possession of the recordings, called them “absolutely horrifying.”

Report: Jaycee Dugard to give Oprah Dec. interview about abduction and life with Phillip Garrido
September 13, 3:37 PM
<snipped>
Jaycee Lee Dugard, who was kidnapped in 1991 at the age of 11 from a school bus stop and held captive for 18 years, is slated to tell her harrowing story on Oprah Winfrey’s talk show.

According to the Mirror, Jaycee is expected to appear on Oprah in Dec. for a fee of $1 million.

In the past, Oprah interviewed Gerry and Kate McCann, a British couple whose daughter, Madeleine, went missing in 2007, while the family was vacationing in Portugal. The McCann’s have publicly announced that Jaycee’s case has given them hope that little Madeleine is still alive.

Authorities today would have better shot at Jaycee kidnappers, advocates say

For Rick Olson, the nagging questions have been replaced by something like regret.

Ever since he helped investigate Jaycee Dugard's abduction in 1991, doubts about the case reared up in his mind almost monthly. Was there more he and other investigators could have done to find the blue-eyed girl who was snatched in her pink windbreaker and stretch pants? What did they miss?

"I've been doing this job 23 years. There's only a handful of cases I can recall like it was yesterday. This is one of them," said Olson, who worked on an El Dorado County sheriff's task force assigned to help find Dugard.

Now, after Dugard's discovery and details of Phillip Garrido's earlier conviction for kidnapping a woman in South Lake Tahoe and raping her in Reno, Olson can't help but wish they had been investigating Dugard's disappearance in 2009, and not 1991.

"Without a doubt, if the investigation happened now, there are a lot more tools we could use to try to help solve the case," said Olson, now a Folsom police detective. "The timing was bad that it happened earlier than later. It's a little frustrating."

Authorities and experts in missing-child cases say technology, changes in the law and a far greater FBI focus have transformed the pursuit of child stealers.

Those advances — including the Amber Alert network — might have helped authorities stop Phillip and Nancy Garrido, police say, before they ever left the Lake Tahoe basin with Dugard, or at least before they reached their home near Antioch 165 miles away.

2ND HEADLINE:
Missed chances
Smith and others pointed to missed chances through the years as parole agents and a Contra Costa sheriff's deputy failed to uncover the backyard area where authorities say Dugard lived in sexual bondage after her abduction.

"We would shut (the roads) down," he said. A Code 50 allowed agencies to immediately communicate with one another by radio.

"We didn't have the Internet or anything else available to us," he said. "We had basic radio communication."

In a Code 50, law enforcement officers deployed to specific, predetermined positions to seal off a suspect's escape.

"All that took a little bit more time because we didn't have the ability to talk to each other as fast," he said.

3RD HEADLINE:
Biggest advance
The Amber Alert network is perhaps the biggest advance, in a case like Dugard's, say experts in missing persons cases.

"The circumstances of her abduction were absolutely perfect for an Amber Alert," said Polly Klaas' father, Marc Klaas. "She was kidnapped in front of a credible witness. Law enforcement was involved within moments, and there are only three or four ways out of Lake Tahoe."

When Dugard was abducted, Congress had just passed the National Child Search Assistance Act, which stiffened requirements for law enforcement agencies to quickly respond to missing child cases and report them into a national database.

4TH HEADLINE:
Rapid deployment
A detailed FBI playbook for child abductions and coordinating searches came later, following the Polly Klaas abduction case and others like it, say advocates for missing children. The FBI now has rapid deployment teams for child abductions, with research showing that in cases of child abduction homicides, the child most often dies in the first three hours

"One of the things we try to make sure happens is you don't lose those vital early minutes, hours and days reinventing the wheel," said Ernie Allen, president of the National Center for Missing and Exploited Children. He described the changes since 1991 as "extraordinary and historic."

"Would there have been a greater likelihood we could have caught him in the early 1990s had these systems been in place? Absolutely," Allen said.

"But we didn't have these systems when his parole was revoked in 1993, and there should have been a really thorough examination of him and his wife and his surroundings. These ultimately are just tools in the hands of people."

Hearing set today for accused Dugard kidnappers
Published: Monday, Sep. 14, 2009 - 6:39 am
<snipped>
A bail hearing was expected to begin at 8 a.m. today for Phillip and Nancy Garrido, accused in the 1991 abduction of 11-year-old Jaycee Lee Dugard.

Following the hearing, El Dorado County District Attorney Vern Pierson is expected to hold a news conference to discuss the continuing investigation.

California corrections officials have refused to release details of how Garrido, who was on lifetime parole, was supervised by a parole agent or to provide dates that the agent visited the Garrido home or back yard. James Scarver, a parole agent who responded to a state Public Records Act request filed by The Bee on Aug. 28, said such dates are "exempt from disclosure." He did not respond to a request for the Corrections Department's policies on how frequently the agent should have visited the home and inspected the premises.

Corrections spokesman Gordon Hinkle has said the agent operated "by the book" and would have been to the home numerous times. However, he said, Garrido managed to conceal the presence of Dugard and the two children. The department called a news conference Aug. 27 to take credit for helping to finally find Dugard, and the news release claiming parole agents helped uncover her presence is featured prominently on the department's main Web site.

In contrast, Contra Costa County Sheriff Warren Rupf has apologized for his department's failure to detect Dugard's presence after a deputy was called to the home by a neighbor's report that children were living there and that there were tents in the back yard.

Sources: Inmates Threatening Nancy Garrido
Fellow Prisoners Warning They'll Rape, Murder Her; She's Spending Her Time Reading Bible, the Sources Say
Sept. 14, 2009
<snipped>
Other inmates are threatening to rape and kill Nancy Garrido, sources tell CBS News, and she's in isolation for her own protection.

They're charged with 29 felonies, including kidnapping, rape and false imprisonment and are slated for a court appearance Monday.

It should be brief, according to CBS News Correspondent John Blackstone, who says the judge is likely to set a date for the preliminary hearing.

Defense attorneys for the Garridos are expected to ask for bail, but analysts it's unlikely bail will be granted, since Phillip Garrido is charged with committing crimes against Jaycee while he was on parole.

And CBS News has learned Phillip Garrido is also being kept in isolation.

Nancy Garrido is "every bit as culpable for all of the crimes that he's been charged with, in every bit the same way," assuming they're convicted, points out CBS News Legal Analyst Trent Copeland.

Sources describe Nancy as "very lonely," and say she spends her time reading the Bible.

Fellow prisoners threatening suspects in cases like this, and those suspects being kept isolated from other inmates for their own protection, are common, former San Francisco prosecutor Michael Cardoza told substitute "Early Show" co-anchor Jeff Glor Monday.

"In a prison system," Cardoza said, "there is a certain code of morality, and this type of crime ranks at the very, very bottom. So it doesn't shock me either one of them has been threatened with death or the other type of
thing, the rape, whatever else they've been threatened with.

"The sheriffs in the jail there have to keep them apart from the rest. And even when and if they go to prison, they will have to be kept in isolation, because that will be the big worry, that someone will try to murder them."

Cardoza said investigators who've seen Dugard recently say she's doing "great" and looks "radiant." She's in psychotherapy, Cardoza says.

Garrido DA: Jaycee's Family Doing "Exceptionally Well"
Updated 8:48 AM PDT, Mon, Sep 14, 2009
<snipped>
Phillip and Nancy Garrido made a quick court appearance Monday where a judge set the couple's bail, but the headline of the day came in a news conference following the hearing. The Garridos are charged with kidnapping Jaycee Dugard from South Lake Tahoe in 1991.

The district attorney said Dugard and her two children, who authorities say were fathered by Garrido, are "doing exceptionally well" and he asked the media to leave the family alone.

In court, the judge set Phillip Garrido's bail at $30 million. There is no bail for his wife because her attorney chose not to ask for bail.

Phillip Garrido, who wore a bandage on his nose in the place that had a red blemish the last time he was in court, showed no emotion, reporters said. Nancy appeared to try to hide behind her hair.

The Placerville court parking lot was nearly full before sunrise as media from across the country and around the world turned out for the hearing.

The judge has ordered a gag order in the case, so prosecutors said they could not comment on specifics.

Bail for Phillip Garrido, a sex offender accused of abducting and raping Jaycee Lee Dugard, was set Monday at $30 million.

But because of a parole hold, he is not eligible for release, El Dorado County District Attorney Vern Pierson said.

Garrido and his wife, Nancy Garrido, face charges in the 1991 Meyers kidnapping of Dugard.

A mental evaluation has been requested for both of the Garridos.

Phillip and Nancy Garrido were brought into a Placerville courtroom together on Monday morning for a brief bail hearing. She appeared to be out of breath.

Nancy Garrido is being held without bail.

Pierson also appealed to media to respect Dugard's request for privacy.

Judge sets $30 million bail for Phillip Garrido

PLACERVILLE -- Phillip Garrido was ordered held on $30 million bail today by an El Dorado County judge who said Garrido posed too great a flight risk and was a danger to the community

The ruling came at a bail hearing for Garrido and his wife, Nancy Garrido, who are accused in the 1991 abduction of 11-year-old Jaycee Lee Dugard.

Nancy Garrido was ordered held without bail.

Judge Douglas Phimister also approved a request by Garrido's attorney that he undergo a psychiatric evaluation. Nancy Garrido's attorney reserved the right to seek such an evaluation for his client.

The next hearing in the case is scheduled for Oct. 29, but Pierson said the actual trial would not begin for at least a year to 18 months.

Both suspects face several life terms in prison if convicted.

"This is a pretty unusual case," he said. "I don't think anyone has had a case like this before."

Pierson said he expects Dugard will testify against the Garridos.

Pierson said there are "very legitimate questions" about how Phillip Garrido won release after serving only 11 years for kidnap and rape.

But he praised parole agent Edward Santos for finally discovering that Dugard was allegedly being held by the Garridos.

"This parole agent successfully broke through an elaborate, well-planned cover story that was 18 years in the making," Pierson said.

California corrections officials have refused to release details of how Garrido, who was on lifetime parole, was supervised by Santos or to provide dates that Santos visited the Garrido home or backyard. James Scarver, a parole agent who responded to a state Public Records Act request filed by The Bee on Aug. 28, said such dates are "exempt from disclosure." He did not respond to a request for the Corrections Department's policies on how frequently Santos should have visited the home and inspected the premises.

Corrections spokesman Gordon Hinkle has said Santos operated "by the book" and would have been to the home numerous times. However, he said, Garrido managed to conceal the presence of Dugard and the two children. The department called a news conference Aug. 27 to take credit for helping to finally find Dugard, and the news release claiming parole agents helped uncover her presence is featured prominently on the department's main Web site.

In contrast, Contra Costa County Sheriff Warren Rupf has apologized for his department's failure to detect Dugard's presence after a deputy was called to the home by a neighbor who reported that children were living there and that there were tents in the backyard.
