SATSUMA, Fla. -- On the day cadaver dogs searched the area around the mobile home where 5-year-old Haleigh Cummings disappeared Feb. 10, the child's father's girlfriend was again questioned by authorities.

"We have to keep the faith that my granddaughter is alive," Teresa Neves said.
When asked if Croslin was still considered the girlfriend of Haleigh's father, Ronald Cummings, Neves said she did not think so.

The Cummings family continues to hold nightly vigils for Haleigh outside the separate makeshift camp sites in the Satsuma neighborhood where her mother and father have stayed since Feb. 10 when the girl disappeared from her bed.

Capt. Dick Schauland stressed that officers continue to hope they will find Haleigh safe. But, he said, officers would be “remiss” if they didn’t investigate all possibilities.
The search Thursday will involve seven dogs, each with a handler. It began at 10 a.m. near Haleigh’s home. Schauland said he didn’t know how long the search will continue.

UPDATED: Investigators Return to Haleigh Cummings' Home

SATSUMA, FL -- Investigators spent an hour at the home where Haleigh Cummings was last seen around 4 p.m. Thursday. Her mother and father were watching as vehicles and search crews came back to the house.
It's not clear exactly what the crews were doing inside, but the search for evidence and DNA has been ramped up today.

Ron Wirth, a former FBI agent who's been doing general analysis on the investigation as a representative of First Coast Crime Stoppers, says the move to get the DNA from Haleigh's mother may be about evidence.
"They may be seeking the biological mother's DNA to establish a basis for test comparisons on items that they have found, or will find, to positively identify or eliminate those items as evidence in this matter," said Wirth.

"If a body began to deteriorate you might get some gasses that the dogs could hit on," said Wirth.
Thursday's ground search is the first major organized effort in some time.
The family spoke briefly to the media Thursday afternoon. Teresa Neves, Haleigh's grandmother, expressed concern over the dwindling crowds of media. She also said Ronald Cummings and his 17-year-old girlfriend, Misty Croslin, are still together as a couple.

Investigators have begun pouring through a garbage Dumpster in Putnam County in the hope of finding something that belongs to missing Haleigh Cummings -- perhaps even her remains, CNN is reporting.
CFN13 is reporting that the Dumpster is a quarter of a mile away from Haleigh's home in Satsuma, a rural community about 80 miles north of Orlando.
Police today are using teams of cadaver dogs to search areas near Cummings' home in Satsuma.

Investigators earlier brought Haleigh's father's girlfriend back in for further questioning, WFTV.com reported. Misty Croslin, 17, was the last person to see five-year-old Haleigh Cummings, who disappeared more than two weeks ago.

SATSUMA, FL -- Angry over rumors she was in hiding today, Haleigh Cummings' mother spoke to First Coast News to clear the air.
Crystal Sheffield spoke with First Coast News Jackelyn Barnard at 6 Thursday evening, and expressed her feelings over the rumors about her.
"I'd like it to stop," she said, adding that while her daughter is missing, she isn't going anywhere.
The rumor that she wasn't available started Thursday when investigators went looking for Sheffield to get a DNA sample, which Sheffield confirmed. First Coast News confirmed Sheffield did give a DNA sample to investigators today.
She said she wasn't hiding from anyone.

"It's very frustrating...I'm very mad right now," she concluded.

SATSUMA, FL -- After well over two weeks, including two very busy days this week, the police tape is down from Ronald Cummings' house.
Satisfied that they have found all they can in the house, police packed up what they had and opened the house back up to Ronald Cummings.
Cummings, however, says he doesn't want to go back into the house where his daughter was last seen.

Capt. Dick Schauland says the dogs will be used in the search again today.
There will be seven dogs searching through the woods behind the Cummings' house, and because the woods are thick, the search is expected to take all day.
Capt. Schauland adds that the flurry of activity recently is not the result of any new information, but routine procedure to re-check areas.

Nothing found after search near Haleigh's home
Officers rooting through garbage after cadaver dogs alert police to something inside
Story updated at 11:03 PM on Thursday, Feb. 26, 2009
<snipped>
Capt. Dick Schauland said it’s not clear what alerted the dogs. A lot of things get thrown in the trash, he said.
Haleigh’s grandmother, Marie Griffis, said deputies didn’t tell her or the family about the renewed search efforts until after the bin was searched. The family of Haleigh’s father, Ronald Cummings, wasn’t told about the new developments until after the search concluded as well.
This is not the first time dogs have been used. Tracking dogs were used early in the search, which will enter its 18th day Friday.

“Through all of these missing person cases they’ve developed these kinds of protocols,” Schauland said. He said investigators still hope to find Haleigh alive but do not want to overlook any possibilities.

The dogs came from non law enforcement groups in North Central Florida and Georgia, Totillo said.
About a dozen teams, consisting of a dog and a handler, will be involved Friday.
On Thursday , law enforcement officers obtained a DNA swab from Haleigh’s mother but not because of new developments, Schauland said. He said one had already been retreived from Haleigh’s father.

Police Search Dumpster Near Haleigh's Home
Last Update: 7:13 pm

Investigators tell us a cadaver dog led them to the dumpster earlier today, but they cannot tell us why it was led there. Detectives are now empyting out the garbage from the dumpster, searching for any new information to lead them to Haleigh.
The sheriff's office has set up flood lights to aid in searching the dumpster. There are multiple investigators handling this search.
Earlier today cadaver dogs searched an area surrounding Haleigh's home. Police tell us this search is to ensure that nothing was overlooked in looking for the missing five-year-old. The canine teams are apart of a non-law enforcement organization, that specializes in finding human remains.

Investigators Say Trash Bin Search Yielded No Clues

Officials said because the dogs can hit on almost any kind of blood, it doesn't have to mean it's from Haleigh.
Earlier on Thursday, Misty Croslin, the 17-year-old girlfriend of Haleigh's father, was spotted speaking with a detective. She had walked across the street with fresh clothes.

Croslin will eventually be interviewed again by Putnam County investigators. Haleigh's grandmother, Teresa Neves, said all the questioning has taken its toll on Croslin.
"It's hard when you've got all that scrutiny on Misty because she was the last person to see the child," Neves said.
Putnam County officials have brought in a new trash bin. They're taking trash bags and bringing them there to empty and use a pitchfork to go through the garbage in hopes of finding any clues that may lead them to Haleigh.

The use of cadaver dogs is a step that the missing Satsuma girl's family was aware of as a standard part of the search, but a step that family members had hoped would be unnecessary.
"I am not surprised, but I will not lose faith," said Haleigh's paternal grandmother, Teresa Neves. "We are still praying that someone will bring her home, but we want them (investigators) to eliminate all those possibilities."
Neves said the search for Haleigh is an unending nightmare.
"You see things like this on television, and you have compassion for the families involved, but you never realize how unbelievable it is to live through," Neves said.

Haleigh's Home No Longer A Crime Scene

Haleigh Cummings' Green Lane home where she was abducted from in the middle of the night is no longer a crime scene. However, Ronald Cummings said he won't live in his home after knowing his little girl was taken out of her bed.
Cadaver dogs continue to search areas around the home of Haleigh Cummings Friday. Thursday one dog alerted on a nearby dumpster, but a thorough search found nothing.
The wooded areas are new to the cadaver dogs.
The sheriff's office wants to make sure nothing was missed in the search.
Bryan Selzer and his dog Eli came from Jacksonville to aid in the search for Haleigh Cummings Friday afternoon.
"We're just doing a different area today. We're hitting mostly the wooded area that we are searching and again we are searching that for the second time to make sure that everything's covered," said Selzer.

Haleigh Cummings' grandmother: She's still alive
Detectives find nothing after searching through dumpster yesterday.

SATSUMA -- Family members today expressed relief that Haleigh Cummings was not found this week by cadaver dogs and pleaded again for her abductor to release the 5-year-old Putnam County girl.
Crime-scene tape was taken down from the double-wide trailer in Satsuma where Haleigh was last seen earlier this month.
Haleigh's father, Ronald Cummings, quickly retrieved some clothes today then left because he doesn't plan to stay in the home, his mother, Teresa Neves, said today.
"If he has enough money, he'll have the movers come and move the thing so he doesn't have to go in there at all," Neves said. "It's where Haleigh lived ... Haleigh filled that home with laughter."

Thursday's search was unsettling but Neves remains optimistic that Haleigh is alive.
"There's always that little thing that scares you to death. To know that she's not there is a relief," she said. "Somebody has her and I pray to God they release her."

Cadaver Dogs Continue Searching Near Home Of Missing Girl
Haleigh Cummings Disappeared On Feb. 10
POSTED: Friday, February 27, 2009
UPDATED: 7:03 pm EST February 27, 2009
<snipped>
SATSUMA, Fla. -- Another day of searching for Putnam County 5-year-old Haleigh Cummings began early Friday morning, when teams of dogs specially trained to find human remains arrived to again search the area around the mobile home park where the girl disappeared on Feb. 10.
In comparison to the anxiety created by Thursday's Dumpster search, Friday -- day 18 in the search for Haleigh -- was calm.
Although detectives said they have searched the woods near Haleigh's home in the past they wanted cadaver dogs to search the area again.

Haleigh's family said it doesn't believe the dogs are necessary because they are confident the girl is alive.
"I believe that my Haleigh is alive and if you're looking out there in the woods and in the water and things, you're not looking for a live child. I trust the detectives to find my baby. I believe that they're doing what they are supposed to do -- what is required for them to do. I don't think she is out there. I think that my baby girl is alive out there somewhere. Somebody has her, and I pray to God that they will release her -- just let her come home," said Haleigh's grandmother, Teresa Neves.

New Pictures and Stories About Little Haleigh
Updated: 2/28/2009 12:07:26 AM
<snipped>
Friday, Haleigh's family brought out more photographs of the little girl for the media.
And every photograph tells a story.
Like the one of Haleigh as a flower girl in her aunt's wedding in December.
The strawberry blond child in a royal blue dress is bent over, picking up the flower petals.
Haleigh's aunt, Crystal Cummings said, "As my daughter and Haleigh were dropping the flowers, Haleigh would pick the petals up! She thought she needed to pick them up. My daughter said 'No. You have to drop them.' It was really cute."
Neves said Misty Croslin, Haleigh's father's girlfriend dressed Haleigh that day.
Neves laughed and said, "Unfortunately Misty let her pick what she wanted to wear which meant there were 50 outfits on the floor every day!"
The laughter heard surrounding these stories Friday afternoon from Haleigh's family is rare. Much of the past two weeks has been filled with tears and worry over the missing little girl.

Searching for Haleigh: K-9s fail to find missing girl
February 28, 2009
<snipped>
SATSUMA, Florida - Cadaver dogs found no trace of missing 5-year-old Haleigh Cummings on Friday, and her family members continued to plead for the little girl's safe return.
Thursday evening, three dogs brought attention to a dumpster near the Satsuma home from which Haleigh disappeared early this month, but after a thorough search, investigators said it contained no human remains.
Haleigh's grandmother, Teresa Neves, said her family had expected the search to turn up nothing because they think Haleigh is alive but that it was a relief nonetheless to know that investigators found nothing in the dumpster.
"There's always that little thing that scares you to death. To know that she's not there is a relief," Neves said Friday. "Somebody has her, and I pray to God they release her."
