A holiday without Haleigh

Published By MATT SAFFER | WAWS TV Jacksonville : Thursday, 26 Nov 2009

PUTNAM COUNTY, Fla. (WAWS TV) - Annette Sykes house is beginning to look ready for the holidays. There are Christmas lights around the sides of Haleigh’s great-grandmother’s home, as well as red ribbons on all the trees. Those ribbons have been there long before the lights went up. “It was hard for her birthday, it’s hard today with it being Thanksgiving…it’s hard to give thanks without her here,” said Sykes.

Barely able to speak, Sykes summed up the holidays in one sentence.

“Without her here---it just won’t be the same,” said Sykes.

“She would be at her Papa Jeff’s…he always cooks a big Thanksgiving dinner…just enough to feed an army basically. She’d be there with the other grandchildren, playing around, screaming and hollering. You know, basically having a ball,” said Sykes.

This Thanksgiving, the family will not be together. Annette says she may stop by her daughter’s house. She says Haleigh’s father is spending the holiday with friends. She says it’s sometimes easier for him to cope with memorable days like Thanksgiving without family around because they remind him too much of Haleigh.

Annette made a plea to whoever has any information in the abduction of Haleigh. She said she doesn’t so much care about punishing whoever did it. She just wants Haleigh home.

This Thanksgiving, the family will not be together. Annette says she may stop by her daughter’s house. She says Haleigh’s father Ronald is spending the holiday with friends. She says it’s sometimes easier for him to cope with memorable days like Thanksgiving without family around because they remind him too much of Haleigh.

“We try not to say anything with Ronald around because he’s so torn up. He just saying he doesn’t know how he’s going to get through it. And I can understand why,” said Sykes.

“It is really, really hard for him. He desperately wants his little girl back. He needs her and I know she needs him. I know how close they were, she’s daddy’s girl and she needs him back,” said Sykes.

A Holiday without Haleigh

<snipped>
“If I could get anything for Christmas, it would be Haleigh. No doubt. That’s all I want for Christmas,” said Haleigh’s father Ronald Cummings.

Ronald invited Action News teams over to his house to speak with him and his mother about the holidays. Ronald has moved a massive memorial filled with Haleigh’s toys and pictures to the main room of the Welaka home he’s staying in. The memorial takes up an entire wall of the living room.

December 10th will mark the 10-month mark since Haleigh disappeared. Her family tells Action News a candlelight vigil will be held the night of December 10th to keep the awareness up about Haleigh. The reward for information on Haleigh’s whereabouts is up to more than $30,000. If you have any information, call police.

Despite it, they say they're still holding out hope and they have her Christmas presents waiting when she returns.

A New Search for Haleigh Cummings?
Laura Recovery Center offered its assistance early in the investigation, but was turned down by law enforcement

December 11th, 2009

A new search for a missing Satsuma, FL girl might be in the works at this time.

News/Talk 97.3 The Sky has spoken with a representative of The Laura Recovery Center in Friendswood, TX this morning to get verification on the rumblings we’ve heard from interested 3rd parties elsewhere.

The representative we spoke with Friday morning said a meeting would be held today to see if this case will be one they will be able to accept.

The Laura Recovery Center offered its assistance early in the investigation, but was turned down by law enforcement. It is our understanding that a third party made contact with the group and then contacted both sides of Haleigh’s family.

To read a portion of an email sent to the third party from the Laura Recovery Center in response to an inquiry go to TJ's Link: http://www.thesky973.com/pages/5874534.php

Teresa Neves and Marie Griffis said 10-months is too long to go without answers about Haleigh's disappearance.

Haleigh's paternal grandmother, Neves, said she wants Gov. Charlie Crist to involve the FBI.

Griffis, Haleigh's maternal grandmother, said a federal probe is needed because Haleigh was abducted from a jurisdiction that is extremely corrupt.

Both have vowed to stop fighting until Haleigh is found.

Haleigh has been missing for 10 months. To mark the anniversary, her family held a candlelight vigil for her at her great-grandmother's home in Welaka. There, Haleigh has Christmas presents under the tree, a stocking on the wall and a family who misses her dearly.

Haleigh's father, Ronald, stood arm-in-arm with his mother at the vigil. Sykes said he spends his nights pacing the floor.
"He actually does wait for her to knock on that door," said Sykes.

Misty was noticeably absent from the vigil. She and Ronald Cummings divorced in October, after only six months of marriage. All along, police have said Misty holds the key to this case.

Family member of Haleigh Cummings jailed in Putnam County on gun charge
Story updated at 6:13 PM on Tuesday, Dec. 15, 2009
<snipped>
The latest wrinkle in the story has nothing to do with then 5-year-old Satsuma girl's disappearance. Freddie Wayne Cummings — the uncle of Haleigh's father, Ronald Cummings — was charged Sunday with firing a gun in public after some family fisticuffs outside a Putnam County bar.

He was with his brother, Jack Lester Cummings, 49, sister, Annie Lee Lucas, 51, and girlfriend, Debra Gray, 58. They were talking about money when things began to escalate, the report said.

The brothers went outside and exchanged blows until Freddie Cummings pulled out a gun and fired twice — once in the air and once in the ground. Bartender Melissa Spoon told the Times-Union Cummings slapped her when she tried to break up the fight and also punched his sister.

Now, many people are anxious for answers and are even calling on the various law enforcement agencies to make an arrest in the disappearance of this little girl. Investigators claim that it difficult to do with the very little evidence they have.

Chrystal Sheffield spoke to First Coast News' Jessica Clark on the last day of the year.

Sheffield said Christmas was extremely difficult.

"There were a lot of things we didn't do. We didn't go all out because she wasn't there," Sheffield said through tears. "We let the kids open their present three days before Christmas because I couldn't do it. I just couldn't do it on Christmas Day."

Sheffield said she feels law enforcement, specifically the Putnam County Sheriff's Office, is not doing enough to investigate her daughter's case.

"It's gone on long enough for them not to know anything," Chrystal sobbed. "I just don't understand. I want answers. I want to know what's going on. I want to know what clues they do have."
