Haleigh's Father, Others Arrested On Drug Charges Last Week

Now investigators are able to question five of the people who were closest to the girl, looking for any possible clues as to what happened to her.

The question now is whether police have Misty right where they want her.

Could they use this drug trafficking case as leverage to get information on Haleigh's case?

"I think there is an obvious linkage between the pressures that are applied in one case for info and the other," Attorney Rod Smith said Tuesday in a phone interview.

Smith is a former state prosecutor who has been following Haleigh's case very closely. He said now is an obvious opportunity for investigators to question Misty once again, and she may now want to talk.

Reports detail alleged drug buys involving Misty Croslin

The purchase of hundreds of prescription narcotic pills by an undercover officer from key figures in the disappearance of Haleigh Cummings happened on rural roads, a fast food parking lot, gas stations and other locales, according to documents released Tuesday by the Putnam County Sheriff's Office.

Reports released Tuesday detail how an undercover officer allegedly bought about 322 pills on six occasions between Dec. 22 and Jan. 18.

Typically the undercover officer would contact Croslin about the amount of drugs he would like to buy, the reports show. The office and Croslin sometimes exchanged several phone calls before agreeing to meet at a location, the report said. Then they would sometimes drive to other locations before the final exchange of money for drugs was made.

The largest single transaction involved 155 pills for $800 on the second of six buys, according to the report.

The report alleges that buy happened Jan. 8 at the Flying J truck stop on State Road 206 and I-95 in St. Johns County.

"(Croslin) stated that she was 'freaked out' because this was a lot of money and a lot of pills. (Croslin) stated that she did not want to get in trouble," the report states. The officer drove Croslin to her Satsuma home afterward.

Crystal Sheffield, the mother of Haleigh and Ronald Jr., has been granted temporary custody of her son Ronald Cummings Jr. after an emergency shelter hearing Thursday. The hearing was held after the arrest of the boy's father Ronald Cummings Sr. on drug charges.

Cummings had custody of his son prior to the emergency hearing. Permanent custody to Crystal Sheffield would have to be determined in another custody hearing.

The father of Haleigh Cummings, his ex-wife and her brother, and two others were in court Thursday morning to face drug trafficking charges.

The Putnam County Sheriff's Office said while those arrested are in custody, investigators will try to question them about the disappearance of Haleigh Cummings.

Dominick Pape with the Florida Department of Law Enforcement said Thursday, "There was a series of undercover purchases that occured. During those purchases, certain individuals would show up. Not always the same people, so that's why you have different individuals. Last night the last two individuals that showed up were Misty and Croslin."

Ronald Cummings mother talks arrests, Haleigh

"He's doing the best he can…that isolation is what makes him craziest," said Theresa Neves, Ronald Cummings mother.

"He said he read a 376 page book from three in the morning until three in the afternoon. So he's doing a lot of reading, a lot of Bible study," said Neves.

Theresa says Ronald is in a jail cell alone, in protective custody. He has a cot and a toilet in his room. The lights in his cell stay on all day and all night, so Theresa says Ron has been forced to sleep under his cot to try and get out of the light.

"I think one day, he called eight times. He was pretty lonely that day, I guess," said Neves.

Theresa spoke at length about how her view of Misty Cummings changed. At first, she defended her former daughter-in-law for months, saying shes told all she knew about Haleigh's disappearance. During our interview, Theresa says now shes not sure.

"The first four months I knew Misty, I thought the kids were her number one priority. They loved her. Just the changes I've seen in the past few months are unreal to me that anybody can be that day and night," said Neves.

"I've never seen her high, never heard of her high, but now that's all you hear…doing things just cant imagine anyone her age can do, " said Neves. "She's definitely not who I think she was. She has made a complete disaster of her life in the past few months," Neves added.

Cummings: Focus Turns To Haleigh
Father Of Missing 6-Year-Old Says Investigators Ask About Girl After His Arrest
POSTED: Wednesday, January 27, 2010
UPDATED: 6:38 pm EST January 27, 2010

Ronald Cummings said questions from investigators immediately turned to Haleigh following his arrest.

"They just told me their main concern is not having me in jail but finding Haleigh," Cummings said in the recorded conversation from his Flagler County jail cell. "They know I don't know anything about Haleigh. I'd be in the DOC."

Cummings also talked about what he'd do if he ever finds the person responsible for the girl's disappearance last February.

"Kill him. I'm telling you, I haven't changed my mind a bit," Cummings said. "I don't care if they get me for unjustifiable homicide. It will be worth life without parole or the death penalty."

Cummings' conversation with the reporter turned from Haleigh to his ex-wife, Misty Cummings, the last person to see his daughter, and whether Ronald thinks Misty knows more than she's telling.

"It's hard to believe she doesn't know more and it's hard to believe she's not talking if she does know more," Cummings said. "Especially if they have her locked up like me."

Haleigh's Grandmother Hopes Arrests Help Find Missing Girl

After a one-hour jail house visit with her son, Ronald Cummings' mother left the Flagler County Jail Wednesday afternoon.

"I started crying the minute I saw him. He did okay until we started talking about Junior," said Teresa Neves said.

She was referring to Ronald Jr., Cummings' son.

"He just bawled when we started talking about Haleigh, but he feels like this may bring her home," she said.

"[Ronald] feels like they're so certain that Misty knows something and that Misty is going to say something while she's in there. He feels like if there's anything she does know, then she's going to tell it," Neves explained.

She said Misty Croslin may reveal more now than what her son was able to get out of her.

"He tried. He's only been hanging around her for two or three weeks, trying to befriend her, find out what he could - and this is what happened," Neves said. "It's like he said, if it brings Haleigh home, it's all worth it."

Reports released Tuesday detail how an undercover officer allegedly bought about 322 pills on six occasions between Dec. 22 and Jan. 18. The pills were oxycodone and hydrocodone narcotics under various trade names.

Several buys occurred in the San Mateo and Satsuma areas, but one occurred at an Interstate 95 truck stop in St. Johns County, the reports said.

"Misty is looking at 25 years because of how much it was," Lt. Johnny Greenwood said of the volume of pills.

Brock was with Croslin on the Jan. 8 buy while Cummings was with her on several of the buys, the reports state. Hank Croslin was with her on one and Sykes on two.

Officials have said they hope the arrests could lead to a breakthrough in the disappearance of Haleigh last year at age 5.

Cummings' mother: "he tried not to cry"

If you've never seen the Flagler County Detention Facility, it is an intimidating place. Razor wire is coiled around tall metal fences. The 132 bed facility only has one way in, and one way out. It was through that gate Theresa Neves will have to drive through each time she wants to see her son Ronald Cummings.

"He looks good. He looks real good. He actually had a shower," said Ronald's mother Theresa Neves.

Ronald is allowed 2 hours of visitation every Wednesday. Besides those two hours, Ronald must remain alone in his cell, rarely allowed out for any length of time.

"He kept looking at the clock...he's like Momma, we only have 6 minutes...momma we only have 4 minutes...I said son, why do you keep looking at that clock? He says well I don't have one in my cell. And they're going to come and get you the second that things turns to two o'clock. He said I know they will, so I just want to tell you I love you," said Neves.

Neves says the only thing Ronald asked for was chain with a cross. The Flagler County Detention Facility is very restrictive about what it lets inmates wear. Religious items are permitted. Ronald's mother says Ronald has asked for the cross so he can keep God close to his heart.

Cops detail drug deals by Croslin, Cummings

"Snip" By Kristin Chambers
Published: Thursday, January 28, 2010
Released detailed reports of the narcotics investigation involving the Ronald Cummings and Misty Croslin-Cummings.

The investigation began on Dec. 22, with the sheriff's office looking into illegal drug distribution activities of Misty Croslin and her brother, Hank "Tommy" Croslin Jr.

By the completion of the undercover operation, both the siblings were arrested, along with Haleigh's father, Ronald Cummings, his cousin, Hope Sykes and former EquuSearch volunteer Donna Brock.

First drug transaction, Misty and Hank Croslin met with an undercover officer at railroad tracks off Buffalo Bluff Road in Satsuma, and made their way to the Oasis Bar, a St. Johns Avenue pool hall and a McDonald's restaurant before completing the exchange of 45 pills.

Second incident, which involved Croslin and Brock, Croslin had stated that "she was freaked out because this was a lot of money and a lot of pills" and "that she did not want to get in trouble".

Other reports detailed Croslin and Cummings distributing the narcotics at predetermined locations, such as the Dunns Creek Bridge and San Mateo area gas stations.

Final transaction took place last Wednesday, when the report says Croslin and Cummings purchased trafficking amounts of narcotics from undercover investigators. http://www.palatkadailynews.com/articles/2010/01/28/news/news01.txt

In a jail house interview, the father of missing 5-year-old Haleigh Cummings, Ronald Cummings, said detectives wasted no time questioning him about his daughter after his arrest last week.

"They just told me that their main focus is not on putting me in jail, but finding Haleigh," Cummings said.

Ronald Cummings made that statement from the Flagler County jail. During the phone interview, he insisted he knows nothing about his little girl’s disappearance last February.

Cummings also talked about his ex-wife Misty Croslin, who was the last known person to see Haleigh. He was hesitant to say whether he believes she knows more than she's telling.

"Man that's a, that's a hard question to answer," he said. "It's hard to believe that she doesn't know more, but it's also hard to believe that if she did know more she ain't already talked. Ya' know?"

Cummings also said, if he does get out, even if it's years from now, he would go back [to prison]. Cummings said, if he finds out who took his daughter, he would kill them and then call police afterwards.

“I don't care. If I find out what happened to my youngin’, it doesn't matter to me. It will be worth life without parole or the death penalty,” he said.

Ronald Cummings mother visited her son for the first time since he was arrested on drug trafficking charges.

He looks good. He looks real good. He actually had a shower, said Ronald’s mother Theresa Neves. Ronald is allowed 2 hours of visitation every Wednesday. Besides those two hours, Ronald must remain alone in his cell, rarely allowed out for any length of time.

Theresa says Ronald spent the beginning of their meeting together talking about shaving, showering, and the meals he was allowed to eat. Once his mother mentioned his children, she says began to cry.

He tried not to cry. He tried to be the big macho boy but it didn’t work. We started talking about Junior and he started crying, said Theresa.

Ronald Cummings jailhouse interview

The interview was conducted on Sunday, January 24, three days after his arrest.

"I'm going to DOC (Department Of Corrections). I'm going to prison, no 'ifs, ands, or buts,'" said Cummings.

Ronald spoke about the night he was arrested. He said at the time of the arrest that he wasn't doing anything illegal.

"I was in the store buying some cigarettes, and I came out of the store, and the dude called me to the car, and I got in a car with him," said Cummings. "When I got out of the car, there was like 6 carloads of FBI, FDLE, whatever…SWAT. They laid me on the ground, and that was the end of that. I've been here in solitary confinement since then," he added.

Ronald talked at length about his jail cell and his isolation. He said his cell only has a toilet, a sink, a cot, and a mirror inside. He said it's no bigger than eight feet by ten feet.

"Nobody on either side, nobody nowhere around, nothing but a hallway. They got a telephone that pushes up to the door. I'm actually kneeled down talking. It's got like 2 maybe 3 inches of cord inside my cell in my room. And its through my food door," said Cummings.

Ronald's voice was very calm during the entire phone conversation. At one point, he did get slightly enraged when he talked about what he would do to the person who abducted his daughter.

Each phone call only lasted for a little more than 17 minutes. Just prior to being disconnected, Ronald had a message he wanted his family to know.

"I want my family to know I love them. I want my girlfriend to know I love her, my kids to know I love them, Haleigh to know I love her, and this is a setback in my life," said Cummings. "When I come out, it will remind me what I should be doing, not what I was doing, or accused of doing," said Cummings.
