Husband charged in 2005 cold case

From staff reports

DURHAM — Durham police have charged Raven Abaroa with killing his pregnant 25-year-old wife, Janet Abaroa.

The arrest comes almost five years after April 25, 2005, when Raven Abaroa called 911 to report finding his wife’s body in an upstairs bedroom at their home at 2606 Ferrand Drive in Durham. Raven Abaroa told investigators that he had been playing soccer while Janet Abaroa was home with their 6-month-old son, Kaiden.

“This arrest is the result of hard and tenacious work by our investigators and a strong partnership with the FBI and the North Carolina State Bureau of Investigation (SBI). Investigators continued to follow leads and never gave up,” Durham Police Chief Jose Lopez told WTVD on Monday.

Janet Abaroa was stabbed twice; an autopsy indicated that a wound to her neck probably killed her, but noted the stab wound to her chest could also have been fatal. The autopsy also revealed that she was in the early stages of pregnancy.

The man who once bragged to an acquaintance about being Internet famous due to his status as the prime suspect in his wife's murder has been arrested at his home in Idaho. Raven Abaroa is now awaiting extradition back to North Carolina to face the charge that he murdered his wife, Janet Christiansen Abaroa, and it couldn't happen to a nicer guy.

Until April 26, 2005, Raven Abaroa was an everyday, workplace sociopath, embezzling from employers and charming everyone around him into believing he was way too nice a guy to ever do anything as horrible as murder. Then on that April day his wife Janet was brutally murdered in the home the couple shared on Ferrand Drive in Durham, NC. To me and most of the folks discussing the case online, it seemed blatantly obvious from the beginning that the one and only logical suspect was Raven Abaroa. He was already accused of criminal behavior and Janet was pregnant with their second child at the time of the murder. It didn't help Raven that he'd once posted strange videos online where he demonstrated a knife he'd received for a holiday gift and stated in a low voice that he "liked... knives."

Durham murder suspect refuses extradition

Raven Abaroa, charged in Idaho on Monday with killing his wife inside their Durham home in 2005, refused extradition back to North Carolina on Tuesday.

This means it will take a little longer for authorities to bring Abaroa back to Durham. His extradition hearing will be Feb. 17.

Monday's arrest comes almost five years after Janet Abaroa, 25, was found stabbed to death inside the couple’s Ferrand Drive home April 26, 2005. She was pregnant, and their son, then 6 months old, was found nearby uninjured.

Janet Abaroa's had picked up her son from daycare, dropped off her car at a repair shop and met with a church member at the couple's home before Raven Abaroa left to play soccer at about 8:30 p.m., police said.

He reported finding his wife's body when he returned at about 11 p.m. There were no signs of a break-in, but a laptop was reported missing from the home.

Family members, through a written statement on a tribute site to Janet Abaroa, noted that North Carolina does not prosecute for the murder of an unborn child.

Suspect in killing to fight extradition

snipped - entire article at link above

Family members, on a tribute site to Janet Abaroa, noted that North Carolina does not prosecute for the murder of an unborn child.

The issue was debated in the Triangle after the 2007 killings of Ebony Robinson, who was eight months pregnant when she was shot to death outside Hillsborough, and Jenna Nielsen, who was almost nine months pregnant when her body was found behind a Raleigh convenience store.
"It needs to be understood that in many murder cases that involve an unborn child, the motivation of ending that unborn child's life is the primary driving force to commit the murder of the mother," the family said on the site, www.tearsforjanet.com. "The state of North Carolina needs to recognize and accept this by passing the fetal homicide law."

In a telephone interview, Janet Abaroa's sister expressed some relief.
The investigation has been "a hot case, then a cold case, then a hot case," Dena Kendall said. "An arrest is great, but we need a conviction," she said. "It's not over until there's a conviction."

Husbands' Arrests Kick off 2010
Posted: Feb. 4, 2010 11:51 a.m.
Updated: Feb. 4, 2010 11:51 a.m.

What a year 2010 is shaping up to be. We’ve already seen two major developments involving unsolved murders in our area: the arrests of Jason Young and now Raven Abaroa. Both cases involve husbands accused of murdering their pregnant wives.

While the legal process has a long way to go in both cases, the arrests of these two men bring an enormous amount of satisfaction to the victims’ friends and families. Speculation swirled about these two men from the start, and everyone with a computer was offering their opinions in chat rooms and web logs since the crimes. Talk of the crimes took on a life of its own. News of the arrests has done the same.

This is the story of the above link:

SANDY, Utah (ABC 4 News) – A five year old mystery murder in North Carolina lead to the arrest of a Sandy City man.

Raven Abaroa was arrested in Idaho. He’s accused of murdering his wife Janet, five years ago in North Carolina.

The Murder remained unsolved until new evidence lead North Carolina Authorities to Idaho where they arrested Abaroa.

Abaroa who grew up in Sandy City even married a West Jordan woman following the death of his first wife.

Vanessa Pond told ABC 4 that it was a marriage that was doomed from the beginning.

“He was frightening. He would yell and curse me out and it started getting a lot worse.”

Pond claims that from the honeymoon until three months later, when they divorced, she was yelled at every day.

“He was screaming at me and pushing me around. He even threw me up against threw all and I fell to the ground and he tried to convince me that I tripped.”

But now Aborea is under arrest for a North Carolina murder involving his first wife Janet.

Pond knew about Janet’s death in 2005. Abaroa told her all about it.

“He lied down on the bed next to me and started cuddling up to me and talking about how mad he was after Janet died, not sad, brokenhearted or anything like that but he just expressed anger and then he cuddled up to me and promised me ‘I’ll never hurt you.’”

This afternoon Pond met with Janet’s family who are in Utah. They’re here to check on the welfare of Raven and Janet’s son. They always felt Abaroa was responsible for Janet’s death and wouldn’t let the case die.

Abaroa remains jailed in Idaho and is fighting against extradition to North Carolina

Fetal homicide debate revisited

http://www.newsobserver.com/news/story/322968.html
BY STANLEY B. CHAMBERS JR. - Staff Writer
This week's arrest of a man charged with stabbing his pregnant wife to death in 2005 has reignited an issue that one state legislator hopes will pick up new momentum.

*snipped

The issue was debated in the Triangle after the 2006 slaying of Michelle Young, who was found beaten to death in her Wake County home; and the 2007 killings of Ebony Robinson, who was eight months pregnant when she was shot to death outside Hillsborough; and Jenna Nielsen, almost nine months pregnant when her body was found behind a Raleigh convenience store.

It was discussed again last year after Camp Lejeune Marine Lance Cpl. Maria Lauterbach, eight months pregnant, was found buried in a Jacksonville backyard.

At least 38 states have fetal homicide laws, according to the National Conference of State Legislatures. North Carolina's law states that a person can receive extra jail time if a crime committed on a pregnant woman leads to miscarriage or stillbirth, but the suspect would not be charged with killing the unborn baby.

State Rep. Pat McElraft, a Carteret County Republican, hopes Monday's arrest renews attention to the issue. She co-sponsored two House bills during the last legislative session, Ethen's Law and The Unborn Victims of Violence Act, which in such instances would add a murder charge for such crimes.

Both bills were referred to the House Judiciary Committee, where they have yet to be heard. Legislators fear the debate will turn into a pro-life, pro-choice issue, said Mc Elraft, who thinks both bills would pass if heard on the House floor. She's considering pushing the bills again later this year.
