Grand jury indicts man in wife's 2005 murder

DURHAM -- A Durham County grand jury Monday indicted former Durham resident Raven Abaroa on a charge of murder in the 2005 death of his wife.

Abaroa, 30, left Durham shortly after his wife's murder on April 26, 2005. He was arrested on Feb. 1 in Montpelier, Idaho.

A judge is expected to decide Wednesday whether Abaroa will be extradited to North Carolina. Abaroa has requested a public defender.

Former Durham resident indicted in death of wife

Durham, N.C. — A grand jury has indicted a former Durham resident in the fatal stabbing of his wife. The indictment handed up Monday charges Raven Abaroa with first-degree murder in the April 2005 slaying of 25-year-old Janet Christiansen Abaroa.

Durham police arrested Abaroa, 30, on Feb. 1 at his home in Montpelier, Idaho. He is being held without bond in Idaho's Caribou County jail.
During a Feb. 2 court appearance, Abaroa requested a court-appointed attorney and told the judge he didn't want to be sent back to North Carolina to face the murder charge, according to the Idaho State Journal.
The newspaper said a Feb. 17 extradition hearing was scheduled in the case.

RALEIGH – An extradition hearing for a Durham man charged with murdering his wife will begin in Idaho Wednesday.

On Monday, 30-year-old Raven Abaroa was formally indicted for the murder of his then 25-year-old wife who was pregnant at the time and the mother of a 6-month-old son.

Abaroa to be extradited back to Durham

DURHAM (WTVD) -- A man accused of killing his wife five years ago will soon make his way back to Durham.

At an extradition hearing Wednesday afternoon in Idaho, Abaroa waived extradition.

The hearing lasted less than 10 minutes.

Abaroa was arrested earlier this month in Caribou County for the murder of his pregnant wife in 2005.

Janet Abaroa was found stabbed to death in the couple's home on Ferrand Drive. She was pregnant at the time. Her husband left Durham shortly after the murder.

Raven Abaroa was arrested in Idaho earlier this month and indicted by a Durham grand jury this week.

Updated: Today at 5:58 p.m.A former Durham resident charged with killing his wife almost five years ago waived extradition from Idaho on Wednesday and is awaiting his return to North Carolina.

Raven Abaroa, 30, was arrested Feb. 1 at his home in Montpelier, Idaho. He is charged with first-degree murder in the April 2005 slaying of 25-year-old Janet Christiansen Abaroa.

During a Feb. 2 court hearing, he said he didn't want to be sent back to North Carolina to face the murder charge. On Wednesday, however, he said he wouldn't fight extradition, according to the Idaho State Journal.

Abaroa waives extradition at hearing

Raven Abaroa signed an extradition waiver during an extradition hearing Feb. 17 in Magistrate court in Paris.

Abaroa will face felony first degree murder charges in North Carolina for the death of his wife Janet.. The State of Idaho will work with the State of North Carolina to arrange his transportation back to North Carolina.
Magistrate Judge Lynn Brower presided in the court proceedings which took about 15 minutes.

There was considerable press interest in the case. Channel 6 news was present, and videotaped the proceedings. A reporter from the Idaho State Journal was present. Also present was a reporter from CBS out of California who had traveled to Paris just for the proceeding.

In addition an aunt and uncle of Janet, Mark and Kara Layton from Plymouth Michigan. were on hand in support of Janet’s family.
Mark Layton said it has been a long time for the family. He said the family is relieved but also said. “The past five years have bee very tough for them.”

He was it has been heart wrenching over the five years. The family has tried to have compassion but were also searching for justice.

Montpelier Man Will Face First Degree Murder Charges in North Carolina

A Montpelier man who allegedly killed his wife in North Carolina almost 5 years ago will now be heading back to that state to face charges of murder.

Wednesday afternoon Raven Abaroa was inside a Bear Lake County courtroom where he will now face extradition back to North Carolina to face first degree murder charges.

Watching the proceedings were Janet's aunt and uncle who said the family is relieved that one chapter of this case is now over with.

PARIS — Raven Samuel Abaroa waived extradition proceedings in Bear Lake County Wednesday. The decision comes on the heels of a North Carolina court handing down a first-degree murder indictment against Abaroa Monday for the stabbing death of his pregnant wife five years ago.

Represented by Bear Lake County Public Defender Steven Wuthrich, Abaroa signed documents consenting to be extradited to North Carolina to face the charge against him.

Sixth District Magistrate Lynn Brower told Abaroa that arrangements would begin immediately to transport him back to Durham, North Carolina. Abaroa was returned to the Caribou County Jail where he is being held without bond.

Lopez says new leads and different investigators working on the case helped lead to a break, which is a relief to Janet Abaroa's family.
