After days of rumor, speculation, and uncertainty there is an arrest in the murder of Annie Le. Yet the layers of this story are still being revealed and many questions remain.

Perhaps this is a prelude to a conclusion, an eventual sentence in the death of a Yale pharmacology student. Raymond Clark, 24, a lab technician, at 10 Amistad, was arrested early Thursday morning in Cromwell.

Tensions remained high as researchers at 10 Amistad St., huddled in small groups outside the building’s laboratories and offices, discussed the times they had seen and interacted with Raymond Clark III, the animal lab technician charged with Le’s murder. Meanwhile, on Yale’s central campus, students said the fact that the killing was probably not a random act has allayed some of their fears, though many said they were disturbed by the possibility that a member of the Yale community had committed the crime.

DNA shows Annie Le's blood on Yale lab tech Raymond Clark boots; green pen clue eyed: Investigators
Friday, September 18th 2009, 5:19 AM

* DNA tests proving Annie Le's blood is on Clark's boots, which have his name on them.

*Tests identifying his DNA on her body and clothing.

*More tests identifying her DNA and hair on him and his clothing.

And then there is the green pen.

Clark did not want to be just some guy who cleans mouse cages, so he distinguished himself by always signing in for work with a pen that used green ink. Every day, including the day of the killing.

Investigators believe he dropped the pen at the scene and was unable to retrieve it after it fell into a crevice.

Lab tech may have had help hiding body

The Yale lab technician busted yesterday in the murder of brilliant grad student Annie Le may have had help hiding her body -- and there could be another arrest, it was reported last night.
Cops are interrogating another employee who works in the lab where Raymond Clark allegedly killed Le, sources told Hartford TV station WTIC/Fox61.

A law enforcement official said Clark was being described as a "control freak" who viewed the lab as his territory.

Clark appeared in court with two public defenders. One of the attorneys, Joseph Lopez, said they would be handling Clark's case, which had previously been handled by a different lawyer. Lopez said he was still reviewing the case and declined to comment.

Among the possible motives detectives are mulling over is Clark's reported criticism of Le for her handling of the lab mice the two worked with, according to the New York Daily News.

Citing e-mails the pair reportedly exchanged, the Daily News said Clark had accused Le of failing to follow protocol when handling the mice, and she'd promised to do better.

Lewis declined to comment on reports that Clark's fiancee had contacted authorities Tuesday night when he came home with scratches, wearing different clothes than the ones he'd left for work in.

Raymond Clark III Was Watched For Days

Raymond Clark III, the man charged in the murder of Yale graduate student Annie Le , was under constant surveillance since last Saturday, a day before Le's body was found in a campus laboratory basement.

On Sunday, when Le's body was found, Velleca said Clark was at his family's home in Cromwell, Conn., and it appeared to be "life as usual." Clark played softball in the afternoon at a park, visited relatives in Higganum and spent time at the Hebron Fair. He then returned to his family's home in Cromwell.

On Monday Velleca told the Independent, "He became a stronger suspect. We switched to overt surveillance." Detectives would deliberately walk in front of the house and make their badges visible. Velleca said their hope was that Clark would initiate a conversation himself, but Clark never spoke to them.

From that point on, Clark suspended his usual activities and would drive straight from his apartment in Middletown to his family's home in Cromwell.

By the afternoon, Clark was moved to the MacDougal-Walker Correctional Institution, a massive prison in South Suffield, Conn., reserved for 2,100 inmates who are considered to be high or maximum security risks.

Clark has wounds on his chest, arms and back, sources told ABC News, suggesting a violent struggle. A bead from Le's necklace was found on the floor of the basement lab where Le's body and blood spots were found on a laundry cart there

Police also found a pair of bloody surgical gloves.

Clark's sister, brother-in-law and fiancee, Jennifer Hromadka, also worked in the lab building but did not go to work this week.

Clark's landlord told ABC News that she wants Clark out of the apartment complex and has served an eviction notice to his lawyer.

Police Focus on Yale Murder Suspect's Attitude
Police pursue theory that lab tech's attitude led to fatal altercation with Yale grad student
NEW HAVEN, Conn. September 18, 2009
<snipped>
Police are considering whether a Yale University graduate student's killing may have stemmed from a dispute with an animal research technician described as an overbearing "control freak" who clashed with scientists and their proteges in the lab where they both worked.

A law enforcement official said police are looking into the possibility that Raymond Clark III's attitude led to a deadly workplace confrontation with 24-year-old Annie Le.

The official, who spoke to The Associated Press on condition of anonymity because the investigation is ongoing and many details remain sealed, said Yale workers told police that Clark was a "control freak" even with scientists and doctoral students at the Ivy League school.

Annie Le Suspect Knew Cops Were On His Tail

(Updated) A day after playing softball in New Haven and attending the Hebron Fair, the suspect in the murder of a Yale graduate student noticed the seven cops following him around. They wanted him to.

That word comes from Lt. John Velleca, head of New Haven police’s narcotics unit.

< snip >

Why the narc unit?

“That’s what they do” — follow suspects around, Lewis said. “They do that every night, working narcotics cases. They have the right kind of vehicles for it.” The department recently revamped the unit under Velleca’s command.

Velleca (pictured) had one supervisor and six detectives on Clark’s tail at all times. They worked in 12-hour rotations, Velleca said in an interview Thursday.

Raymond Clark's Co-Workers Describe Him as a 'Control Freak'
Sept. 18, 2009

Raymond Clark is spending his first full day in a high-security prison, refusing to talk to cops about the crime for which he stands accused: the killing of Yale grad student Annie Le. But a picture of Clark is emerging as an overbearing "control freak" who was upset with Le's handling of the mice in the lab where they both worked.

In addition, computer records show that Le used her Yale ID swipe card to enter a small room off a lab in the basement, and then never used her card again. The Hartford Courant reports that Clark's swipe card records show that he entered that room too, indicating he was the last person to see Le alive.

Expert: Motive in Yale Murder Not Needed
Legal Analyst Says Physical Evidence Against Suspect in Grad Student's Death May Convince Jury Beyond Reasonable Doubt
Sept. 18, 2009
<snipped>
With word on evidence pointing to the suspect arrested in the murder of Yale graduate student Annie Le - blood traces, a text message, a security access card showing he was with the victim - the investigators' case against Raymond Clark III appears strong.

But is physical evidence sufficient for prosecutors to obtain a guilty verdict if they do not have a motive for the crime?

CBS News legal analyst Lisa Bloom said, "Absolutely."

Investigators have been questioning a number of people, including other employees at the lab where Clark and Le worked. [Clark's brother-in-law and sister also worked in the same building.]

Appearing on "The Early Show" Friday, Bloom said that prosecutors do not have to prove motive.

Demanding Job in a Divided Lab, Then a Murder

< snip >

The chief sought to dispel any notion that Ms. Le, who was about to be married, had been stalked by Mr. Clark or that Yale itself was unsafe. But the arrest opened a window into a peculiar work environment, populated by thousands of animals, driven researchers and the technicians who perform the lab’s menial but essential work.

Those technicians are given a special order: to serve as advocates for the animals and guardians of regulation about how they should be treated.

“There is a certain stress that builds with the job,” said David Russell, who worked as an animal technician at Yale from 1997 to 2008. “If there’s something wrong, you are the one who is on the hook.”

Report: Yale Suspect Tried to Hide Blood
Suspect's and Victim's DNA Found in Ceiling and Crawl Space of Lab, Official Says
September 18, 2009
<snipped>
Staffers in white lab coats reported to work Friday at the end of an extraordinary week at Yale University as a report surfaced detailing the DNA evidence that police say implicates a technician in the murder of a Yale graduate student.

The official said Clark tried to hide blood-spattered equipment and cleaned up areas Le was in before she vanished Sept. 8.

Appearing on CBS' "The Early Show" Friday, legal analyst Lisa Bloom said that prosecutors do not have to prove motive.

"It's not an element of murder or any homicide crime," she said. "Sure, they'd like to have it, because a jury is always going to be curious as to what the motive is. But when there's a mountain of physical evidence which sounds like what we're gathering here now, they certainly don't need to have motive."

A memorial service is planned on Long Island sometime between the Jewish high holidays of Rosh Hashanah, which begins Friday evening, and Yom Kippur on Sept. 28, according to the temple attended by the family of Le's fiance, Jonathan Widawsky.

A memorial service for the victim in the Yale killing is planned at her fiance's New York temple between the upcoming Jewish high holidays.

Cantor Sandra Sherry says Temple Beth El in Huntington wants "to create a private memorial service" for 24-year-old Annie Le.

The holiday period begins with Rosh Hashana and ends Sept. 28 with Yom Kippur.

Le's body was found in her Yale lab building Sunday. Funeral plans haven't been announced.

Students at Yale University said life on campus is slowly returning to some sense of normality after a fellow student’s slaying.

One Yale coworker who wished to hide their identity told Eyewitness News that in the days following Le’s death, if Clark was nervous, he did a good job in hiding it.

“There was a rumor that he had a bad temper and had exploded,” the coworker said.

Another coworker said some people considered Clark to be a control freak who viewed the lab as his territory.

A player on an opposing team said Friday that Raymond Clark's girlfriend often watched the games but wasn't at Sunday's game in New Haven.

Thirty-six-year-old Vinnie Mauro calls Clark "nondescript" and says he didn't lose his temper or even interact much with other players.

Mauro says he usually recognizes Clark by the Mets jersey he wears with player David Wright's name on the back.

Two friends of Clark's since childhood, appearing on CNN's "Larry King Live" on Thursday night, said they were stunned by the murder allegations and could not reconcile them with the young man they've known for years.

"That's not the Raymond Clark I've talked to my whole entire life," Bobby Heslin said.

"I just can't picture him doing something like this," Maurice Perry said.
