Chief: may never know killing motive

An investigator observed Clark trying to hide cleaning equipment that contained blood splatters as teams probed the disappearance of Le, who was 24, according to a law enforcement official familiar with the investigation who spoke to The Hartford Courant.

But despite Clark's efforts, investigators found the DNA of both suspect and victim in the ceiling and in the wall recess where Le's body was hidden, the official told the paper.

Prosecutors may face difficult questions in Clark's trial about why they didn't restrict access to the lab after Le was reported missing, legal experts said. Le disappeared on a Tuesday, and authorities didn't close it until the weekend.

A memorial service for Le is planned at the Huntington, N.Y., temple her fiance's family attends between the high holidays of Rosh Hashanah, beginning sundown Friday, and Yom Kippur on Sept. 28, cantor Sandra Sherry said.

IN THE AFTERMATH OF A TRAGEDY
Yale Applicant: 'You Can't Stop Going'
12:08 a.m. EDT, September 20, 2009
<snipped>
The killing of Le, a graduate student in pharmacology, shined the sort of spotlight on Yale that no university wants. But it's doubtful the tragedy will have lasting negative effects, if interviews with perspective students, their parents, and experts on colleges are any measure.

The situation was quite different in 1991, following the death of Christian Prince, a sophomore and fourth generation Yalie who was shot and killed not far from the university president's home.

In 1998, there was another homicide: Suzanne Jovin, a Yale senior, was found stabbed to death in a wealthy neighborhood near campus. Her thesis adviser was questioned in the case, which has not been solved.

Still, applications were unaffected and actually increased in the next year. Again the university focused on security. In recent years, lighting, emergency phones, and Yale police and security forces have been expanded and police visibility has increased.

Van de Velde: Cops learned from mistakes
Published: Saturday, September 19, 2009
<snipped>
James Van de Velde has seen this movie before. Watching the story of the terrible slaying of Yale University graduate student Annie Le unfold in his former city and at his former university, the only person ever named in a “pool of suspects” for the killing of Yale undergraduate Suzanne Jovin says he’s glad investigators have learned to be more careful about publicly pointing fingers.

Van de Velde, who lost his Yale lecturer job at that time but was never charged in Jovin’s death, has maintained his innocence since her slaying in the East Rock neighborhood 11 years ago.

Her killer has not been found.

Annie Le's Body Escorted To California
Lab Tech Describes Relationship With Students
POSTED: 1:19 pm EDT September 20, 2009
<snipped>
As the family of Annie Le escorted her body back to California for a private funeral, details are revealed about what kind of a daily working relationship a graduate student doing research and a lab technician may have had.

Former lab technician David Russell told the CBS “Early Show,” “The researchers look at the animal technicians sort of as a policing body … data they are collecting isn’t going to help them at all.”

“It’s stressful because you’re dealing with politics and the importance of the research … dealing with people,” Russell said.

New Haven Police Chief James Lewis said Monday that police do not plan to charge anyone other than Raymond Clark in the death of Annie Le. Le was strangled Sept. 8 and her body hidden in a wall in a Yale medical school research building. Her body was found five days later on what was to be her wedding day.

Lewis confirms that police confiscated a car belonging to Clark's father over the weekend. The younger Clark was arrested at the hotel early Thursday.

Annie Le Was on Fast Track, Suspect Ray Clark Cleaned Cages; Did Worlds Collide?
Noted Criminologist Says Suspect, if Guilty, Might Have Exhibited 'Relative Deprivation'
Sept. 20, 2009

Brad Garrett, a former FBI agent and an ABC News consultant, said the fact that Le was found strangled may hint at a motive in the case.

That psychological mind set can be triggered "when you are measuring your own self worth against others and you come out on the bottom," according to Northeastern University criminologist Jack Levin, who has been following press accounts of the case.

"[Ray Clark] worked in an Ivy League school where most of his co-workers were potentially successful and had advanced degrees and were looking forward to a fulfilling and happy life," said Levin. "He was cleaning cages."

Annie Le Murder: Raymond Clark's Public Defender Troubled By Leaks In Case
September 21, 2009
<snipped>
"I think it's outrageous that there are law enforcement authorities that are releasing details, and it's inappropriate and something should be done about it," public defender Thomas Ullmann said Sunday night. "I called for an investigation and I also feel that, if it's discovered who's leaking this information, they should be fired."

"Law enforcement people who are professional don't go talking to the press and don't go making anonymous phone calls to sources in the media releasing details when they know they're not supposed to do that," Ullmann said

Workplace Horror Stories: Yale and Beyond
While Still Rare, Workplace Violence Affects Workers Everywhere, From Yale to Your Local Pizza Place
September 21, 2009
<snipped>
It happened nine years ago, but the scene is still fresh in Carol's mind: Her onetime boss pinning one of his young employees against a wall in a conference room and landing multiple punches on her face.

The murder has raised new questions about workplace violence across the country and brought back painful memories to people like Carol, who quit Yale Medical School shortly after the beating she witnessed in the summer of 2000. (A current employee at the medical school, who also asked not to be named, and Yale's clerical workers' union confirmed the incident. Yale University and New Haven police did not immediately return calls from ABCNews.com.)

No motive in Le’s murder
Published Monday, September 21, 2009
<snipped>
“Of course, Annie, her body, is home,” Dennis Smith, a New Haven pastor who became a family friend over the past two weeks, said Sunday night. “And of course now the family is away from where the crime happened, and I think that’s probably good. But there are still major events ahead of them with the funeral and all that it entails.”

The funeral will be open to family members and close friends, Smith said, adding that the family hopes its privacy will be respected during “this time of loss and grief.”

Avery said authorities have no other suspects at this point, and no plans for any further arrests in the investigation. But he revealed that Clark was not the only person the NHPD followed beginning last weekend. “A few other people” were subjected to around-the-clock surveillance, Avery said.

Annie Le's Family Prepares for Killed Student's Funeral
Police Rule Out Any Additional Arrests in Yale Murder
Sept. 21, 2009
<snipped>
"We just want the media to respect our privacy. We have a lot of stuff to do. This makes it all the much harder," Le's brother Chris Le told ABC affiliate KXTV.

Smith said Columbia University graduate student Jonathon Widawsky, who was to marry Le, was holding up emotionally "as well as can be expected."

Smith said he was with the family as it learned details of her death.

"So traumatic for them all the way through. … But they were handling it very well," he said.

News10 Exclusive: Le's Brother Says Family Overwhelmed by Media Crush
September 21, 2009~4 hrs ago
<snipped>
Speaking with News10's Suzanne Phan Sunday, Chris Le said media attention focused on his sister's murder and the arrest of a suspect in the case has been overwhelming at times.

Chris Le also confirmed that his family would like any donations in Annie's memory to go to the I Have a Dream Foundation.

The foundation, which helps children from low-income communities reach higher education with guaranteed tuition support, was a cause favored by Annie and her fiance and was also suggested on the couple's wedding registry.

Cops Refute Claim Yale Student's Body was "Mangled"
New York Post report on Annie Le "false", says police chief
Updated 6:36 PM EDT, Mon, Sep 21, 2009
<snipped>
But now, New Haven police are going on a media offensive trying to set at least part of the record straight.

At issue is a line in this New York Post article that cites a source that says that Ray Clark, the suspect in this case, "broke the bones and mangled the body of a strangled Yale grad student to fit it through a wall."

New Haven police refute that line of the story.

“This information is false,” said Chief James Lewis, in a statement released late Monday. “This myth must be dispelled at the request of the State’s Attorney,” he continued. State’s Attorney Michael Dearington has not commented on the case.

Who leaked information in the Le case?
Updated: Monday, 21 Sep 2009, 7:14 PM EDT
Published : Monday, 21 Sep 2009, 5:30 PM EDT
<snipped>
In a high-profile case there's a constant rush to get the latest information out there, sometimes even before the police have finished their work. The New Haven Public Defender's Office said that could potentially taint a jury pool and it's just not fair to the suspect.

They've now written a letter to the New Haven State's Attorney's Office calling for a full-investigation.

The New York Post is now reporting most of Le's bones were broken in order to get her into a small space in the basement wall where the suspect, Clark III, is accused of putting her.

The newspaper cites unidentified sources for that information; it's something seen time and time again over the past two weeks in this case.

Report: Alleged Killer Broke Yale Student's Bones
Lab Technician Raymond Clark III Charged In Annie Le's Death

The source reportedly told the New York Post, "He just crushed her in there. She was like mush -- she was so smashed up you couldn't recognize her."

The New York Post did not identify whether the anonymous source was directly linked to the case.

Lewis confirmed that a car towed by police Saturday from the Cromwell, Conn., hotel where Clark was arrested belonged to his father, Raymond Clark Jr. He wouldn't say why police obtained a search warrant for the car.

An attorney for the younger Clark didn't return a call Monday.

Yale: Lab tech had building access until arrest
Monday, September 21, 2009
<snipped>
Yale spokesman Tom Conroy said Monday that the school didn't disable an identification card that gave Clark access to campus buildings until after his arrest Thursday, four days after 24-year-old Annie Le was found strangled in the lab building where they both worked.

Yale referred further questions to the New Haven police. Police said Monday that investigators knew where Clark was at all times after Le's body was found.

Clark was under constant surveillance even before Le's body was found and the case was ruled a homicide. Conroy wouldn't say whether Clark continued to work in the days before he was arrested.
