Ah ok thanks I am new :) I have known Matt for about 7 years (awaiting verification call) and I hope to be able to process some of this because our whole friend group is pretty much is still in shock.

@crimespotting, how are you and your group doing? Hope you're all getting some kind of help getting through this. I'm thinking about the act of true forgiveness, and how hard it is to get there.

There's no going back from this. Forgiving himself, if that's even possible, will be the hardest. I worry most about the mother of the children. I hope she's getting counseling and is surrounded by loving people. Prayers.

"For now, Coleman's family and friends are still reeling from the sudden violence, and may not yet be ready to accept his apology."

"I think there's compassion there," says the longtime family friend, "but forgiveness is going to take some time. What he did is just so horrific. It's going to take a lot of time for everyone to wrap their heads around it."

His tiny children cannot give forgiveness to this murderer. Who else is qualified to give forgiveness?

This man needs locking away from the world forever.

Well, there's his wife, the mother of the children, she was left suffering without her children. There's people on here that say they knew him and are dealing with their feelings. There's a whole community affected and struggling to understand how this could happen. Forgiveness isn't about forgetting or not pursuing Justice. I see forgiveness as a healing process. Hanging onto the raw anger is destructive. I just hope their mother will be able to find peace eventually. All JMO.

Santa Barbara man pleads not guilty for the murder of his two children in Mexico | NewsChannel 3-12

Well there you have it, my friends. He pleads not guilty on what grounds? He fully admitted to killing his own flesh and blood.

And so goes the judicial process. Whereas MC described what he did to his beautiful children during questioning, I do want him to have a fair trial whereupon conviction, a judge may educate both the public and the jurors on why the constitution provided for death as just punishment for capital offenses.

We recently we learned of the horrific details of Gannon Stauch's murder by his stepmother. After such details, I'm convinced that it will probably be by referendum but that Colorado will also restore the death penalty. MOO

I wouldn't expect the Q- rationalizing father who murdered his two babies to actually take accountability.

Disgusted, angry, all that, yes.

Surprised, not really.

What will the lawyer try... Insanity defense, Q made him do it? Not properly Mirandized?

The family, per a couple of articles, thinks 'he must have snapped'. If that's what they need to tell themselves to cope, okay. His confession was clear. Now he will get the benefit of the doubt in the court system, a legal defense, and much MUCH more protection than he gave his two little ones when he drove them to Mexico and spear-gunned them to death in a field.

Only God, IMO.

Yep. Seems his lawyers somehow gave him a glimmer of hope to save his own life. Nothing excuses or explains what he did to those two beautiful, trusting, innocent children. If he were truly remorseful of what he did, he’d be on suicide watch. IMO

Like I said earlier, I have a hard time believing in people instantly snapping. As far as I'm concerned, this was premeditated. He spent a whole day, before murdering his children, in a hotel with his children. He did a lot that points to him being aware of what he was doing. MOO, he knew what he was going to do, and that it was wrong. There's no going back now on his decision. The decision was final for his children. All MOO. His crimes final, not debatable now.

I can't lie, it's a great disappointment that he is going to go through with a trial. Apparently, he can live with himself, and thinks it will be possible for others to forgive him for what he did. It's going to be a long road for others to forgive, IMO. I can't believe this man is going to try to find a way to defend his despicable actions at the cost of causing more suffering for the children's mother, and all who loved those children.

I know he was going to be mentally evaluated. Did the results have anything to do with the decision to plead not guilty? This is all MOO.

In the weeks since Matthew Taylor Coleman was arrested for allegedly killing his two children, he as been held at an undisclosed federal prison — but a Coleman family friend tells PEOPLE that he is seeking forgiveness.

"He has spoken to his family on the phone," a longtime family friend tells PEOPLE. "It's sinking in what happened, and he's devastated. He has begged his family for forgiveness."

The family's life changed forever on August 7, when Coleman and his wife, Abby were packing for a family trip. Authorities allege that Coleman abruptly put his two kids — Kaleo, 2, and Roxy, 10 months — into his van and drove away from their Santa Barbara, Calif., home.

9/29/21

Matthew Taylor Coleman's not-guilty plea was officially entered Wednesday morning in a San Diego Federal courtroom.

[..]

Coleman will be represented by the Federal Public Defender for the Central District of California and will be housed in the San Diego district.

He was indicted by a Federal Grand Jury earlier this month. The indictments charge Coleman with two counts of foreign first-degree murder of United States nationals. By law, these charges are eligible for the death penalty.

The government moved for Coleman to remain in detention, arguing that he was both a flight risk and a danger to others or himself. His defense said they were not seeking bail at this time.

Coleman's next hearing will be scheduled for Nov. 5 at the U.S. District Court Southern District of California in San Diego.

He killed his own children - a baby and a toddler. There's no coming back from that.

I think I missed a step in this case. Last I read here, MC was to undergo a psyche eval. Did that happen? It's not mentioned in any of the more recent news stories?

I can't imagine the family would condone the death penalty, if their input holds any influence. When will that be announced?

Appears there's a change after the grand jury indictment:

Coleman previously was charged with the same crimes in a federal complaint filed in Los Angeles. Prosecutors intend to dismiss that complaint. Coleman is expected to make his initial court appearance on the indictment tomorrow in United States District Court in downtown Los Angeles. He will appear in United States District Court in San Diego, where the case will be prosecuted, at a date to be determined.

Even though the case has been moved to the San Diego courts, it seems the need for a psyche evaluation would be a priority. Questions about his undergoing a mental health evaluation have not been answered or mentioned yet. Yes, I'm curious.

In one case I followed, we waited while the defendant spent years in a mental hospital. He was finally deemed fit to stand trial and a trial date was set, and then he pleaded guilty. So, maybe in time, MTC will change his mind, and plead guilty. Or it's possible there could be a plea deal and he spends the rest of his life locked up. MOO, seen it all, anything is possible.

This is from another article about a sentencing today where the defendant did get a death sentence from the jury.
"While use of the death penalty is under a moratorium in California, prosecutors have still sought the sentence in certain cases with the possibility of that policy being reversed in the future. The ban on capital punishment went into effect via a Gov. Gavin Newsom executive order in 2019 and will last at least for the remainder of his term in office."

Anyways, stay tuned--
