Not by name, but MTC is mentioned in this article.

Why QAnon followers are like opioid addicts, and why that matters (nbcnews.com)

"The week before, people around the country struggled to comprehend a gruesome homicide allegedly committed by a QAnon-following father who, according to authorities, told the FBI he killed his two small children because he believed they’d inherited from their mother lizard DNA that would turn them into monsters. Last spring, a mother admitted to killing her three children, saying she wanted to protect them from becoming victims..."

"It is also likely that prolonged exposure to QAnon content exacerbates or even triggers mental illness, as watching video after video about horrific devastation can have a detrimental effect on anyone’s mental health. This then increases the appeal of the remedies QAnon prescribes, such as..."

...Moreover, the internet platforms through which most QAnon followers consume content are deliberately structured to sustain user engagement and foster a kind of addiction. In fact, these online QAnon experiences seem to engage the same brain structures responsible for addiction, as solving the “puzzles” revealed by conspiracy theories may prompt pleasure-driving dopamine hits...

and:

...QAnon shares one last parallel with addictive drugs: There is a small but powerful group of individuals who benefit financially and politically from amplifying, spreading and legitimizing QAnon’s conspiracy theories...

Fascinating. The article criticizing conspiracy theories offers a conspiracy theory as a way to understand why believers believe conspiracy theories.

Of course.

MTC's family, friends and, most likely, his wife were probably at a loss to help him get grounded in reality again. Many are not sure how to even talk to someone lost in conspiracy theories. It gets difficult, sometimes impossible to give an opposing view.

I found these article and this author's suggestions simply put, helpful, and practical. He speaks from experience too.

MTC kept reading and using more brain power towards the conspiracy theories. I don't doubt it was some kind of dopamine hit. Finding secrets and the rush of enlightenment might've been MTC's addicting stimuli. BTW, there's a new non-fiction book called Dopamine Nation on this subject about how we are bombarded by pleasure stimuli which makes us "vulnerable to compulsive overconsumption". The book talks about pleasure turning to pain and urges finding balance.

Great find. Have to laugh at the way you pointed it out. (So true she says with a sad chuckle.)

I completely believe the part about chasing a dopamine hit by following internet clues. I mean, here we are, sleuthing, lol.

Just my own thoughts, that dopamine may make people feel good when first starting out putting puzzle pieces together in conspiracy theories, but pleasure turns to pain. Those same people end up sometimes being untrusting, angry, and even violent. We need to stay balanced and grounded, and look at facts not believe just anything.

"When a conspiracy believer's ideas are challenged, their pattern recognition brain areas aren't the only parts in play. People who subscribe to conspiracies tend to think intuitively or emotionally rather than analytically, according to a 2014 study in Cognition."

"Dopamine is a part of this pattern processing, and Hafeez says that people with higher levels of dopamine in their brains have been shown to be more likely to believe out-there theories." ...BBM

Just to point out, opioid addicts don't kill their children.

Chris Watts wasn't taking opioids, and I wouldn't say having an affair made him kill his children.

Something might be a trigger, but IMO being a psychopath or otherwise personality disordered, are the cause.

Yep, they are too busy killing themselves.

I just read the article, and I think the author compared qanon to opioids in a bit of a sensational way. Qanon conspiracies become an addiction for a lot of people. Addictions can ruin lives and families, whether it’s addiction to drugs, alcohol, conspiracies, 🤬🤬🤬🤬, sex, etc. I don’t doubt that engaging in these ridiculous, paranoid theories gives a lot of Qs a dopamine rush, but thankfully, people aren’t dying left and right as a result of their conspiracy theory addiction.

There’s no doubt in my mind that a correlation between opioid addiction and qanon addiction exists in some situations. Both addictions are terribly painful for loved ones, rampant, and not showing signs of slowing down very much. That being said, thankfully, 50,000 people per year don’t die of qanon overdoses like they do opioid overdoses.

Sorry for the rant, but both of these addictions are deeply personal to me. Upthread I mentioned my sister was getting into qanon BS before she died. But qanon didn’t kill her. Opioids did. Idk, they are just two totally different beasts.

...Chris Watts wasn't taking opioids, and I wouldn't say having an affair made him kill his children.
Please read the parts of the article I highlighted to understand what the article is saying. People get an addictive high and a dopamine rush from many different activities, lust and love included.

Chris Watts was not into QAnon, so he wasn't mentioned by me but you. However, he was high on his affair, it sure didn't help him get a grip. It wasn't the only reason, but it was perhaps the catalyst. Yes, plenty of people are personality disordered and don't kill. The highlighted parts of the article aren't talking about killing. Well, that's JMO, and I hope you will read the gist of what I was saying.

The indictment filed today charges Coleman with two counts of foreign first-degree murder of United States nationals. By law, the charges are eligible for the death penalty. The Attorney General will decide whether to seek the death penalty at a later date.

Snip

Coleman is expected to make his initial court appearance on the indictment tomorrow in United States District Court in downtown Los Angeles. He will appear in United States District Court in San Diego, where the case will be prosecuted, at a date to be determined.

Bumping reminder of MC's arraignment on Thursday.

I don't know if the evaluation is affecting the date.
There was one document manually filed under seal on Aug 19.

They've not disclosed where MC is being held but the post-indictment arraignment has been continued to Sept 9, 2021 so that's really not much of a delay considering there's a federal holiday on Sept 6.

Bumping reminder of MC's arraignment on Thursday.

Appears there's a change after the grand jury indictment:

Coleman previously was charged with the same crimes in a federal complaint filed in Los Angeles. Prosecutors intend to dismiss that complaint. Coleman is expected to make his initial court appearance on the indictment tomorrow in United States District Court in downtown Los Angeles. He will appear in United States District Court in San Diego, where the case will be prosecuted, at a date to be determined.

Mexico - Kaleo Skye, 3 & Roxy Rain 10 mos, killed by US surf instructor dad, Rosarito, 10 Aug 2021

8/11/21 Update: Coleman made his first appearance in U.S. District Court via video in downtown Los Angeles on August 11, 2021, according to the U.S. Attorney’s Office. Coleman is being represented by Elena Rose Sadowsky of the Federal Public Defenders Office. On Sunday, they submitted a waiver of preliminary hearing to the court. A magistrate judge ordered Coleman to be held without bond & set his arraignment for 8/31/21. He remains in custody without bail. Coleman is being held in protective custody. He has been charged with two counts of foreign murder of United States nationals. A law enforcement says in its upcoming issue that the next step is for Coleman to be assessed by a psychiatrist to determine whether he is fit to stand trial. It's unclear when the psychological assessment will be conducted -- or whether the results will be publicly released. Arraignment hearing was put on hold, next is a further proceedings hearing on 9/9/21.

I lived in Asia for a while and I cannot tell you the number of young people I rescued from evangelical Christians in teams sweeping through trains with beatific smiles, cornering young people, mobbing them and trying to convert them to their particular religion. No different to the Qanoners.
