I know of a case due to an indoor heated pool with something faulty. Also improperly vented stoves/ovens. I wonder if the unit they were renting had a kitchen?

An appliance such as a gas stove left burning would produce enough carbon monoxide to be fatal if there was no ventilation. Maybe Mom started making dinner and fell asleep in bed with Dad, kids were watching TV and all were oblivious to there demise.


Campers have been known to die from carbon monoxide poisoning in tents from gas or kerosene lanterns and cooking stoves.

A coworkers parents passed away in AZ a few years back due to CO poisoning. I can't for the life of me remember the source of it, but they just laid down, went to sleep and never woke up. They had just moved. I think this is likely what happened in this case also, but I could be wrong.

Yes, something similar happened near my town. Family of 3, all fell asleep. One survived and told the doctors later that she had had a terrible headache and just wanted to lay down for a minute because her head hurt and she was so sleepy (she only survived because a friend came by to pick her up to go to the movies and no one answered the door. The friend called 911.). CO doesn't have a smell, that's why you need a CO detector. I can see that happening in this situation.

Wonder if they had had any serious health issues recently ?

I was considering health issues as well. Perhaps a viral infection such as Bacterial Meningitis. For all four to die suddenly from such an infection would be highly unlikely and surely you would think someone would have called for help.

What I meant was a serious diagnosis of a terminal illness. Leading to a group suicide. IF the door was left open, unlocked, that's kind of strange, imo. Wonder when the Mexico trip was planned ?

I've been affected by CO poisoning. Everyone was sleeping and we all woke at the same time feeling sick. Assuming CO we went outside and it was verified later.

Yes quick google search says it would not take long at all if it were in a closed environment with no venting- running car with garage door closed.
But this was in a open space. Lower concentration. Where there windows open? Being in a vacation resort it would seem so.
And CO would be the result of burning, which means the furnace would be on and windows closed.

It's usually so hot there (even at night, unless you're right on the beach with the breeze) that the a/c would be running the entire time. And I would never leave the windows open at a vacation spot because I spend too much time on WS.

It sounds like CO poisoning is the most likely answer. I wonder how long that particular condo had been closed up before the Sharp family arrived. Maybe the unit had been filling with CO for days or longer and they walked in, put their things down, settled in to watch TV and relax, and died. As has been pointed out, CO doesn't have a smell, so they wouldn't even know they were breathing in a deadly gas until it was too late.

It was a rep from the State Department that found them. Not fire / rescue. PLUS they probably want to air that place out ASAP as long as the family had apparently been deceased.

A ventless heater/fireplace comes to mind, or possibly a clogged up appliance flue.

Amy Sharp's cousin Jana Weland told ABC News the family flew out of St. Louis and called Amy Sharp's mom that same day to let her know they had arrived.

It was the family's second time in Mexico, and their planned activities included meeting up with some friends and going to a water park, Weland said.

But "they never showed up at that water park to meet them," Weland said.

On Thursday night, the family had a "gut feeling" that something was wrong when they watched for the last flight to St. Louis and they "didn't hear from them," Weland said. She added that it was "unusual" that they weren't posting photos because "last year they shared pictures about every day."

"I guess we were all kind of hoping for the best -- that maybe they were just planning to stay another day," she said.

ABC affiliate KETV in Omaha reported there were no signs of foul play.

"To my knowledge, they went to sleep and never woke up," Weland said.

How would A/C affect CO ? Running the AC would not be the cause of CO,right ? Also, if the door was left open, did they all pass away as soon as they had entered the condo, before they even had a chance to lock /secure the door ? I wonder what clothing they had on ? Sleeping clothes ? Was the TV on ?

My moms husband had left his car running in the garage and forgot about it. My room was right above the garage. They left (in another car) to go to dinner. I had taken a shower and just felt awful. Had a horrible headache, felt sick and just wanted to sleep. I took some Advil and laid down. I was almost asleep and something woke me up and I just had a gut feeling something was wrong. I called my best friends mom and she said to call 911 bc it sounded like CO poisoning. Sure enough they found the car running. I had to spend all night in shock trauma and in a hyperbaric chamber. My Co levels were so high they were genuinely surprised I was able to stay awake. My mom had my little sister who was 6 months old and took her to the ER to get checked out. Thankfully we are all here to talk about it. I mean, I literally almost died. But a little something in my head told me something was wrong. I bet something like that happened to them

How does that happen? Wouldn't he have missed the keys or something? I mean I am pretty darn scatterbrained but I can't imagine what reason you would have for leaving a car running when already pulled into a garage? Yikes 😳

So true, Hippononymous! I have my first and I have definitely caught myself getting out with it running a couple of times. I am not all sure the the push button ignitions are an improvement.

Ah yes! I didn't even think of those. Or remote starts. Thank goodness my car is old or I would have one more thing to worry about!
