Mexico - Shanquella Robinson, 25, American, Beaten to death in apparent “femicide”, San Jose del Cabo, 28 Oct 2022

I remember the headlines about SR and can't believe it's already been a year.

There's insufficient info in the article here where this civil suit is being filed but seems to me it's a civil suit for wrongful death.

Unfortunately for the victim's family, I doubt the lawsuit by the parents will be successful and/or dismissed for failing to state a (actionable) claim.

Generally, it's not a crime to remain silent (pursuant to the Fifth Amendment).

As far as I can find, NC only has enforceable reporting laws for crimes against juveniles-- (i.e., State and Federal laws that follow the guidelines generally written for "mandatory reporters").

Although some states have enacted legislation to make not reporting a felony actionable, here, I think they'd have to prove the group's silence was to actively conceal a crime. JMO

Interesting that they are suing the FBI and the Department of Justice for a crime that occurred in Mexico. That may be where the money is.

I don't think this is about money. This is about trying to get answers. By adding the FBI and DOJ, they can force some answers out of them (maybe).

Her mother is suing the Cabo Six, alleging multiple counts of wrongful death, battery, negligence, conspiracy, and emotional distress. The lawsuit also names the U.S. Department of State and the FBI as defendants.

“This lawsuit is not just about seeking justice for Shanquella Robinson; it’s about holding accountable those who were entrusted with the duty to investigate, act, and protect the interests of U.S. citizens abroad,” Sue-Ann Robinson wrote. “The heartbreaking details of Shanquella’s death and the subsequent mishandling by federal authorities only add to the family’s grief, and they deserve both full transparency and justice.”

The lawsuit was filed on Oct. 25, 2024, in Mecklenburg County Superior Court. It can be read in full here.

Sadly, this is the only way apparently that they care going to get any answers or attempt at justice. I feel so bad for them.
It is totally shameful.

I agree with you. The attorney or the mom stated the FBI said it may take up to 5 years for them to release their findings on her case so this could force them to do it now.

Me too. Having your child be murdered far away from you...

This family wants justice for their daughter. They aren't doing it for money, going through a trial is extremely painful and makes them vulnerable to even more public abuse. Rest in peace Shanquella, you were greatly loved.

I never thought they were doing it for money but as I stated, to get the information and hopefully justice.

Such a frustrating case. What are they waiting for? A video? Wait, they already have a video showing the assault. What the heck is taking so long, FGS.

Family attorney Sue-Ann Robinson, (no relation to the deceased), told the US Sun.

'We all saw what happened on the video, and we are demanding that US authorities step in and prioritize the case and allow the extradition process to flow, allow Mexican authorities to prosecute the person they've identified as the aggressor in Mexican courts.'

She said that FBI told her they are not able to release the documents [autopsy results] to them because the case is still open, and they are still waiting for documents to be translated to English that they received from the Mexican authorities.

Despite the response, Robinson said there are 'red flags everywhere.'

'You've made a decision in the case, you've announced the decision publicly to the family and to the public,' she said, in part, 'but you're saying the case is still not closed and admitting that some of the documents from the investigative file that arguably would affect your decision to charge have not been fully translated.'
BBM: This is totally cow manure. IMO

Well, the Mexican authorities don't really care. The FBI probably doesn't either and the jurisdiction is a mess.

I know that, in the American court of law, everyone is owed the boon of innocence until proven guilty and all that but.... I can't help but feel like "legally changing a name and moving to a completely different part of the United States" is a really telling action.
