Ashley Regina-Marie Young, 32, hasn't been seen since Nov. 29, according to the Kalamazoo County Sheriff's Office. Young was last seen as she traveled to Grand Rapids.

Why isn’t he being charged with murder?

Why isn’t he being charged with murder?
Several reasons: 1.) The police do not have a positive ID of the victim. If the partial remains are that of AY, all the circumstances add up. In the rare event they are not. The circumstances just became exponentially complicated. 2.) Because it seems the partial remains were found in a basement shared by multiple tenants, a defense argument could site that this is circumstantial; several people have access to this basement. 3.) They don't have all the evidence they desire. AY's car is still missing which could provide alternate evidence that connect her to this specific crime. Sadly, it appears some of the victim's remains are also still missing. 4.) It's possible there isn't actually evidence of homicide at this point, only evidence to suggest mutilation to a corpse.

IMO, these changes are enough to hold JJC while investigators craft an airtight homicide case for the prosecutor to bring forth should he plea not guilty.

While the preponderance of evidence feels quite obvious given the circumstances, the police must be methodical so that the family has to endure the bare minimum of pain as they navigate this journey toward closure. Heartbreaking.

Thank you for your explanation...yes, and where is her car?

Jared James Chance is expected to be arraigned Wednesday, Dec. 5 in Grand Rapids District Court on charges of mutilation of a dead body and concealing the death of an individual.

Police found "several areas of blood" in Chance's apartment as well as well as articles of cleaning. They also found "articles that could have been used to dismember a human body."

Police responded about 4:30 p.m. Sunday, Dec. 2 to a residence in the 900 block of Franklin Street on a report of a suspicious situation involving possible foul play.

I have read on her Missing FB page that her phone goes directly to voicemail. Has anyone read that it has been pinged and what they found out from that?

They were friends on facebook, for how long I don't know.
JJC's facebook indicates he joined FB in May 2018. So, unless he has past accounts, they've been FB friends for no longer than 7 months. Several news outlets have referred to him as an "acquaintance", as have social media posts.

Man with history of substance abuse charged with mutilation of a body

Grand Rapids District Court Judge David Buter set bond at $750,000. Chance has his next court appearance set for mid-December.

Chance, who once lived in Holland, has a criminal record dating back to when he was 15 years old. His offenses as a teen include shoplifting and possession of alcohol.

He has several driving offenses, including a drunken driving arrest in Allegan County.

Chance in 2016 was convicted of possession of methadone and possession of Oxycodone for offenses in Ottawa County. He was placed on probation, but his probation was terminated in October of 2016 for three violations, including marijuana use.

Yeah, it is unknown how long they knew each other. Ashley's own current FB only goes back to June. Hard to know.

I think I saw on the news last night that the mother said they haven't found the phone, just that it just rings and rings and then goes to voicemail. That would be an indication That it's dead right?

Thank you for your explanation...yes, and where is her car?
I saw on a news clip that her neighbor said that one of the reasons she put things together to call the police is that she saw this man drive away in what could be Ashley's car, among the smell, him looking around, etc.

'Strange smell' leads police to bloody torso in basement; man charged
'Strange smell' leads police to bloody torso in basement; man charged

First, I thought the tenant was a female, as interviewed on the news??:
"Grand Rapids police were called to the house Sunday afternoon after a tenant went into the basement to investigate a strange smell. The man located what appeared to be a bag or a tarp with blood coming out of it. He left the basement and called 9-1-1, according to a five-page court document released Thursday, Dec. 6."

This is horrific when it is stated this way! :
"Police obtained a search warrant for the house. A search of an upstairs apartment where Chance lived revealed other body parts "that are suspected to have belonged to the torso located in the basement,'' Fannon testified."

Oh my goodness.

And then this....
""It was learned through our investigation that (Chance) was with a female acquaintance two days prior and that that female acquaintance was since reported as a missing person and she has not to this date been located,'' Fannon said."
