GUILTY MI - Charlie Bothuell, 12, Detroit, 16 June 2014

They look at patterns of maltreatment. Charlie was subjected to both physical and psychological abuse.

Cross: Mr. Dillard

Can doctors disagree about stuff (my word). YES

Mention a Dr. Mosby: she did not look at his records. (Charlie's primary care doctor?) Some times they do, some times they don't. It depends on the case.

Dillard asks her something about Mosby said Charlie was obese and recommended exercise routine.

(Charlie was obese in 2011 according to Mosby)

Lots of confusing discussion of how obesity is measured in children.

Dr. is so confused by these questions!

Charlie had same weight for 2 years prior.

It seems to me that Dillard is using the term "scientific methodology" incorrectly here. I think of methodology as in DNA testing. How in the world can you have scientific methodology in pediatrics?

  • #643
Poor doctor is confusulated! Judge keeps yelling at Dillard for cutting the witness off.

  • #644
I'm not confident in the pediatrician as an expert witness in this case. Mr. Dillard is intimidating and comes across as a bit of a brute. Dr. Nazer is demure, soft-spoken, and probably unaccustomed culturally, socially, even professionally to responding in kind to Dillard's overpowering demeanor. :moo:

I don't know enough to be sure. But Dillard using "methodology" as a medical term in this context doesn't work. A lot of what she does is through her medical experience and training. What kind of methodology is applied to reading an interview? You look for clues.

I missed the first part of this and will watch it another time. Did the interviewers, police, hospital employees testify?

  • #646
Lots of confusing questions for me. Dillard asks about her knowledge of English.

  • #647
Dillard keeps talking about methodology, bringing up Charlie's prior history. A psychologic illness, an assaultive child would be part of her "methodology" ... yikes!

  • #648
Doctor says these illnesses would not affect her diagnosis of abuse. (Kid is abused because he has psychological problems???)

Mosby diagnosed him as ADH. (And that makes him eligible for abuse?)

Asks if she was aware Charlie assaulted others at school? Big objection, Judge says she's not aware of any such record.

Now Dillard asks if she knew Charlie was hostile? Judge says she can answer, just based on the question, not the reality.

Charlie was a liar?

Does she know Dr. Mosby's protocol for Charlie's treatment?

SHE NEVER READ MOSBY'S record.

  • #649
Charlie was diagnosed as possibly having scabies.

Did not know of other infections.

Now, Dillard asks if she knows the regimens of football, baseball players? (Objection, sustained as well as Pop Warner Football) This goes one and Ms.Goldfarb keeps on objective.

Overruled: Dr. said excessive exercise.

Defense is trying to make Charlie's regimen seem normal for a 12-year-old athlete.

I can't keep up anymore, I'm out of practice.

All I can say is that this is one tough case.

The defense is going to be Charlie is a bad boy, a liar, and in need of extreme discipline to keep him in shape. Dad and Step-Mom are dutiful parents to this ADH liar.

And, my feed went down... :gaah:

Just lost WDIV live feed.

Charlie's father has relinquished his parental rights to the boy who now resides with his biological mother. I'm sure part of giving up his parental rights was a strategic move to save him from prosecution. How can he be found guilty of abusing a child no longer his? :moo: Poor little Charlie.

  • #654
At the rate they are going, they won't get past the Dr. today! I know Charlie is waiting upstairs.

  • #655
Anyone have a live feed now, or are they finished for the day?

Doctor: Detroit boy in basement truthful about fearing dad, stepmom

Charlie Bothuell V missing for 11 days last June before authorities found him

Published On: Apr 14 2015 09:01:26 AM EDT Updated 13 m

DETROIT -
A doctor says she believes a Detroit boy found in his basement after 11 days told the truth when he said he felt threatened by his stepmother.

Dr. Dena Nazer testified Tuesday at a hearing to determine if Charlie Bothuell's father and stepmother will go to trial on torture and child abuse charges. The case resumed after a two-week break. More testimony is expected Wednesday...

Well, it appears they didn't get past the doctor. The big piece of information today was that Charlie had ADD, according to his primary physician (and NOT a child psychologist/psychiatrist). These kids do cause a lot of problems, but they can be treated.

I found this interesting article that discusses treatment, mostly without medication. Compare what this says and compare it to what the "parents" did to him.

http://www.helpguide.org/articles/add-adhd/attention-deficit-disorder-adhd-treatment-in-children.htm

Exercising is one of the easiest and most effective ways to reduce the symptoms of ADD/ADHD. Physical activity immediately boosts the brain’s dopamine, norepinephrine, and serotonin levels—all of which affect focus and attention. In this way, exercise and medications for ADD/ADHD such as Ritalin and Adderall work similarly. But unlike ADD/ADHD medication, exercise doesn’t require a prescription and it’s side effect free.

Activities that require close attention to body movements, such as dance, gymnastics, martial arts, and skateboarding, are particularly good for kids with ADD/ADHD. Team sports are also a good choice. The social element keeps them interesting.

There is also a nutritional component as well. It's a good, quick read.
