Hot Car Toddler Death

Aired July 7, 2014 - 21:00 ET

THIS IS A RUSH TRANSCRIPT. THIS COPY MAY NOT BE IN ITS FINAL FORM AND MAY BE UPDATED.

From Charlie Bothuell segment:

PINSKY: Back with Sam, Evy, Vanessa and Adrianna. New details in the case of the basement boy, Charlie Bothuell. The DA has told us, they have

not as yet received a request for police to charge the father. In the meantime, Dad says he had no idea, as you heard there, about the secret,

so-called twitter account, about the child`s hidden cash.

I tried to find out how much money, we probably do not know yet. And, he did not know about either of those things until the FBI told them.

The FBI has told us that they are not in a position to confirm any of this. Adrianna, I have not heard from you in this story yet, come on as a panel,

what do you think?

ADRIANNA COSTA, AMERICAN TELEVISION PERSONALITY: I do not trust one thing this guy says. Like my visceral reaction is that he is a big fat

liar. And, also he is a control freak. He called Charlie`s biological mom to try to talk to Charlie. She rejected that call, thank goodness. So, he

says he did not know about the Twitter account. He did not know about the additional money.

I do not believe any of that. This is a guy who monitored how many steps his poor kid ran on the elliptical. Yes, I do not believe one thing

he says. I think he is so much more involved in what he is letting on. He loves the spotlight. He is becoming -- this is an odd comparison, perhaps,

but a michael lohan, holding his own press conferences and listing the media to perform a lie detector case for him. What are you talking about?

Stay away.

PINSKY: Evy, what about the wife was saying not trusting she would be treated fairly. How much more objective and fair can a lie detector test

be than the fact in.

POUMPOURAS: Well, you know, when you are dealing with individuals perpetrators offender, that is what they are going to say, I do not want to

take one because, you know, it is not fair; because they are worried that they are going to fail it. Obviously, he did not get through his exam.

So, she is just throwing in further justification.

And, regarding what Adrianna was saying. A lot of the things he said, I watch that video clip, highly deceptive comments that he is making.

There is a lot of red flag with his speech patterns. Dr. Drew, if I may, at one point he says, "My wife did not do anything to my son." Just like I

have been saying that I did not. You catch that? He is saying my wife did not do anything. That is a commitment there. But, he is saying just like

I have been saying I did not. He is not saying the same thing for himself.

PINSKY: Sam, what do you think?

SCHACHER: Yes. Listen, I think that there is definitely something very odd here. I have said that from day one. I was just reading on your

Facebook as well as on Twitter that a lot of people are saying, "Well, how do we know that this kid is not lying, that perhaps the stepmother did not

place him there."

I tell you why I think he is being honest. Because, when he admitted to the police, when he was in isolation that he was beat with that pipe,

they wanted to see, "OK, is this kid exaggerating, is he lying?" They went and corroborated the story by finding that PVC pipe, by questioning the

father. So, I think that if he can be forthright about that, it is most likely that he can be honest about other things too.

PINSKY: And, Vanessa, should we be concerned about this Twitter account that the kid had on his own. He is 12 OK, on the twitter and to

have done so without the parents knowing about it? Do you have trouble with that?

BARNETT: I am not so much worried about the son being on Twitter as I am about the father not knowing about it. He is a big fat liar in a lot of

departments. But, I actually believe him here. I think he phoned it in completely oblivious as to what his son was doing online.

I have said it before, I will say it again. You have to stalk your children online. I am sorry. We are in a day and age where it moves so

fast and parents think they are up-to-date because they know snap chat. That was a day ago. You got to --

PINSKY: Yes. You need to be one step ahead. No matter what. When you think you are up, they are ahead of you.

BARNETT: And, you are not. Yes. Stalk your children. It may be a twitter account today but it could be a tender account tomorrow.

PINSKY: Evy?

SCHACHER: Tender.

(LAUGHING)

POUMPOURAS: I do think he may not have something to do with his son disappearing because he was very adamant about it, I did not murder my son.

I did not do this to my son. However, I do think he is very deceptive when it comes to child abuse.

PINSKY: Yes.

POUMPORAS: Because with his press conference, he kept trying to steer everybody towards, like, "Hey! I did not murder my son. I did not do

that to my son." But when they talked about child abuse, his speech pattern and all of that completely shifted.

PINSKY: And, again, no charges of abuse, no charges of really wrongdoing against this dad yet. And, I have still started to wonder to

what extent the child`s behavior has contributed to these circumstances, just an interesting thought. Listen, I am not blaming the victim here at

all. I just have to wonder what is going on with that kid. Got to go. Got great news for our friend Leeann Tweeden and her husband. We will

share that with you after the break. We will be right back...

No local media updates so far today. I'm becoming a little impatient that no charges have been filed in the case but quickly remember that Wayne County Prosecutor, Kym Worthy, is diligent, meticulous, and thorough. As long as young Charlie is away from his father who has only supervised visitation with his son, Ms. Worthy is going to take her time and make sure that she has an airtight case before moving forward with arrest/s and appropriate charges. Justice for young Charlie! :scale:

Can someone kindly explain what the twitter/hidden cash is about that is referenced in the Dr. Drew transcript?

  • #509
From the Detroit Free Press
Twice a day, every day, Charlie Bothuell V told authorities, he had to complete workouts: 100 pushups, 200 sit-ups, 100 jumping jacks, 25 curls on each arm with a 25-pound weight and thousands of revolutions on an elliptical machine.

If he didn’t finish the workout in under an hour, the 12-year-old said he “would have to do it again,” according to a court petition filed this week in Wayne County’s juvenile court.

Much more at link.

I've never been a fan of Dr. Drew and rarely watch his show. This comment that he made regarding young Charlie made me :furious: :

No child should ever be disciplined the way that this father (and stepmother?) punished young Charlie. Their "parenting" methods are beyond cruel. The three children who were in their "care" should be removed from these abusers permanently. :moo:

Mr. Bothuell claimed to know nothing about young Charlie's alleged Twitter account. No amount was given, but young Charlie might have been saving allowance/gift money so that he could possibly run away. :moo:

DETROIT -
The state wants a court to terminate parental rights of a Detroit man whose 12-year-old son was missing more than a week before police found him in his own basement.

The details revealed in the petition are worse than I thought: "Charlie V reported that Mrs. D-B stated 'she doesn't f---ing like me, and will f---ing murder me.' She has also made additional statements such as 'unlike you, I know where the sharp knives are,' and 'I can make you disappear.'"

I haven't watched Dr. Drew in a looong time. He tries to diagnose people he has never met, and most times defends their behavior. I have watched some this week, and he still interrupts everyone, and still has too many screaming meemies on there. But one thing I heard him say last night was that Susan Smith had post partum issues and some kind of other diagnoses. I live near where she rolled her kids off in the lake, and I read and watched everything as it happened. I think she wanted a bf more than she wanted kids. I can't watch him anymore! He comes off as a quack. IMO

BBM. Same here. Union County is a next-door neighbor to my county. I followed the case from the beginning, too, and I NEVER believed SS's story from day one. ITA, she did it for her BF, who didn't wanted kids. As for Dr. Drew, never watched him until last week...tried to watch an episode, but I could only take a few minutes of his crap. Not too big on the JVM-NG-DD trio. JMO.

there's was nothing normal or loving about what this man did to this child.

Oh wow, they don't just want to terminate parental rights for Charlie but also his siblings.(from above quoted article)

The petition also wants to terminate the parental rights for the family's other two children -- a 4-year-old boy and a 10-month-old girl.

Psych evaluation to help decide if boy found in basement can see dad

12:43 PM, July 10, 2014

A Wayne County juvenile court referee today ordered that the 12-year Detroit boy, who was missing for 11 days before being found in his basement, undergo a psychological evaluation to see if it is in the child’s best interest to have visitation with his father.

A petition filed in juvenile court details abuse accusations made by Charlie Bothuell V against his father, Charlie Bothuell IV, and stepmother, Monique Dillard-Bothuell.

Referee Nicholas Bobak today continued hearings on that petition and another regarding Charlie’s two younger siblings until July 17, giving attorneys for Bothuell and Dillard-Bothuell time to gather discovery...

New Details In Case Of Missing Boy Barricaded In Basement; Beaten, Forced Into Extreme Daily Workout

July 10, 2014 1:50 PM

DETROIT (CBS Detroit) A petition filed in Wayne County’s family court reveals new allegations in the case of the once-thought missing boy who was actually barricaded in his basement.

Charlie Bothuell V, 12, was missing for nearly two weeks — with national coverage of his “disappearance” — before he was found June 25 by Detroit police in the bowels of the multiple-unit condo building where he lived with stepmother Monique Dillard-Bothuell and his father, Charlie Bothuell IV.

There are allegations Charlie V’s stepmother, Monique Dillard-Bothuell placed him in the basement, barricaded him in, and told him not to come out no matter what he heard...

...This civil proceeding addresses parental rights and remains independent from any criminal proceedings.

For now Charlie will remain with his biological mother, and the younger two children with grandparents until the next hearing set for next week.

Magidson said Charlie will also undergo a psychological evaluation.
