GUILTY MI - Charlie Bothuell, 12, Detroit, 16 June 2014

  • #521
Oh wow, they don't just want to terminate parental rights for Charlie but also his siblings.(from above quoted article)

The petition also wants to terminate the parental rights for the family's other two children -- a 4-year-old boy and a 10-month-old girl.

The 4-year-old boy is reportedly autistic. I suspect that bio-Dad will have difficulty dealing with this child's "imperfection". I don't want to even think about the type of punishment that he might inflict upon this child who he likely deems "unacceptable". I'm not sure what Mrs. Dillard-Bothuell's role has been in the discipline of young Charlie or that of her other children, but I feel strongly that all three of Mr. Bothuell's young offspring are better off without their father. :moo:

New Details In Case Of Missing Boy Barricaded In Basement; Beaten, Forced Into Extreme Daily Workout

July 10, 2014 1:50 PM

DETROIT (CBS Detroit) A petition filed in Wayne County’s family court reveals new allegations in the case of the once-thought missing boy who was actually barricaded in his basement.

Charlie Bothuell V, 12, was missing for nearly two weeks — with national coverage of his “disappearance” — before he was found June 25 by Detroit police in the bowels of the multiple-unit condo building where he lived with stepmother Monique Dillard-Bothuell and his father, Charlie Bothuell IV.

There are allegations Charlie V’s stepmother, Monique Dillard-Bothuell placed him in the basement, barricaded him in, and told him not to come out no matter what he heard...

...This civil proceeding addresses parental rights and remains independent from any criminal proceedings.

For now Charlie will remain with his biological mother, and the younger two children with grandparents until the next hearing set for next week.

Magidson said Charlie will also undergo a psychological evaluation.

http://detroit.cbslocal.com/2014/07...ent-beaten-forced-into-extreme-daily-workout/

From the same article:

•The morning and evening workouts consisted of the following:
•100 push-ups, 200 sit ups, 100 jumping jacks, 25 arm curls on each arm with a 25lb weight, and 5000 revolutions on the Elliptical Trainer.
•The evening workout consisted of the same routine, but instead of 5000 revolutions, Charlie V had to complete 4000 revolutions on the Elliptical Trainer.
• Charlie V reports having to complete the entire workout “in under an hour or I would have to do it again.”
•Charlie V reports there were times when he was in too much pain to complete his workout, due to being hit with the PVC pipe on his feet. If he failed to complete the workout, he would “be in trouble again.”

I didn't hear about this until NG last night. Then, I hopped on here for confirmation. Needless to say, NG showed Big Daddy's infamous reaction to his son's being found. What struck me was that he never asked if Charlie was alive or dead. Then, when told that he was alive, there was zero change in his reaction, z..e..r..o. Not long after, he told reporters later when he was crying and hugging on one of them, he had thought his son was dead.

I also hung on to view Dr. Drew on the topic. I was aghast that one of the commentators, "Anajita" sp? immediately said that it was little Charlie who was probably lying and had put himself in the basement. IIRC, she wanted "corroboration" and apparently, the scars on his body weren't enough to give the child credibility.

The transcripts for the two shows aren't up for the 10th yet, but I can't wait to see them. I'm furious that the attitude on Dr. Drew is so negative about this child. No wonder I barely watch it ever.

Well, it's 4:30 AM here and I guess I'm going to have to wait for links as his show hasn't updated the videos on the case.

Here is a bit of NG from last night.

I haven't watched Dr. Drew in a looong time. He tries to diagnose people he has never met, and most times defends their behavior. I have watched some this week, and he still interrupts everyone, and still has too many screaming meemies on there. But one thing I heard him say last night was that Susan Smith had post partum issues and some kind of other diagnoses. I live near where she rolled her kids off in the lake, and I read and watched everything as it happened. I think she wanted a bf more than she wanted kids. I can't watch him anymore! He comes off as a quack. IMO

O/T: Is there a forum here just to discuss shows in general like Dr. Drew, NG, JVM or the Investigation ID shows? Man, I would love to talk about some of these shows...

I wonder what kind of autism a 12 year old boy in the 9th grade (according to his twitter) has. I've only seen in one place that he is. Is that being more widely reported, now?

OK, the Dr. Drew transcript is now available: http://transcripts.cnn.com/TRANSCRIPTS/1407/10/ddhln.01.html

I'm snipping a couple of the most offending comments I mentioned.

PINSKY: Anahita, why no arrest? Is it just because they don`t believe the kid? BBM

ANAHITA SEDAGHATFAR, ATTORNEY: Well, yes, I think that`s a big issue. So far, they don`t have enough evidence to prove that the father did anything here. They just had the child`s statement, and that hasn`t been corroborated. I think the police need to continue with the investigation.

They absolutely need to test the PVCc pipe for blood, make sure that`s his DNA and like I said, corroborate this child`s statement, because we don`t know if he possibly has some mental issues that`s causing him to perhaps lie about what happened. I`m not saying he`s lying. But --

PINSKY: Samantha?

SCHACHER: Yes, no. I would run away too. This poor kid, and he had this secret Twitter account. Yes, he had nowhere else to turn to.
I`m about ready to jump out of my seat, Anahita, when you say there`s not enough evidence. This kid has scars all over his body. He said he was beat so badly because of the fact that the dad used this PVC pipe. And guess what? The dad admits to using this PVC pipe. Isn`t that enough evidence right there?

SEDAGHATFAR: It`s not evidence. So far, all we have is child`s statement that he`s made to the police psychologist. And, look, I`m not saying it may not turn out to be true. But the police can`t file charges, criminal charges against the father based on the statements by the child.

SCHACHER: He has scars. He has a physical proof.

SEDAGHATFAR: That`s only what`s based in -- we have to be clear. All of these statements that we`re talking about are allegations that are made in a court document that`s filed with the state, with respect to child custody and visitation issues. So, you know, it`s a very different standard when you`re talking about family law and civil law, versus criminal law which is a much, much higher standard.

I just can't stand that Anahita. I usually tune to another station the minute I see her on the program. Since when are scars, backed up by the abuser's own statements evidence? Much more at the link.

I don't think Charlie V is autistic. It's the 4-year-old son who is reportedly autistic.

Boy found in basement says he was beaten, threatened by father, stepmom

Oralandar Brand-Williams/The Detroit News

Detroit—Charlie Bothuell V, the 12-year-old boy whose disappearance last month made national headlines, told authorities he was beaten with a PVC pipe by his father, Charlie Bothuell IV, and threatened by his stepmother not to make any noise while he was barricaded in the basement of the family’s home while police searched for him for 11 days.

The boy, reported missing by his parents, was found June 25 shivering and hungry in the family’s home on Nicolet Place in Lafayette Park, near downtown.

The allegations of physical and verbal abuse are contained in a six-page Michigan Department of Human Services report filed with the family division of the Wayne County Circuit Court seeking to terminate the parental rights of Charles and Monique Dillard-Bothuell.

According to the allegations, Charlie Bothuell was subjected to marathon sessions of exercise where he was forced to get up at 5 a.m. and do two grueling workouts a day every day of the week...

'Missing' boy found in basement tells authorities of grueling forced exercise

By Ashley Fantz and Susan Candiotti, CNN

updated 8:29 AM EDT, Fri July 11, 2014

(CNN) -- Twice each day, 12-year-old Charlie Bothuell V says in court documents, he was forced to do 100 push-ups, 200 sit-ups and 100 jumping jacks. He told child welfare investigators in Michigan that he'd have to curl a 25-pound weight on each arm and do 5,000 revolutions on an exercise machine, and if he didn't finish in less than an hour, he'd have to do the routine again, according a petition filed in Wayne County court in Michigan this week.

The Detroit boy said that he feared being "in trouble again" for not completing his work-out routine. Sometimes he couldn't finish because he was in too much pain, he said.

Charlie made national news in June when his father Charlie Bothuell IV said his son went missing for 11 days, prompting a search that involved the FBI and that ended bizarrely when the child turned up barricaded in the father's basement.

The father was talking live on air with HLN's Nancy Grace when he learned that state police had discovered his son, appearing shocked when Grace told him that she'd just received breaking news about it...

Probation violation charges against Monique Dillard-Bothuell dismissed

Published On: Jul 11 2014 07:57:10 AM EDT Updated 13 m

DETROIT -
The charges for violating probation against Charlie Bothuell’s stepmother were dropped in a hearing on Friday afternoon.

Monique Dillard-Bothuell's defense insisted that there was no sufficient evidence that she had violated the terms of her probation, and the judge dropped the charges.

Her defense suggested that the alleged weapon may have been in the home without Dillard-Bothuell's knowledge, or that it was disassembled...

Judge dismisses charges against stepmom of boy found in basement

Oralandar Brand-Williams/The Detroit News

Detroit— Probation violation charges were dropped on Friday against the stepmother of a 12-year-old boy found hiding in the basement of his family’s east side home after his father reported him missing for 11 days.

Charges against Monique Dillard-Bothuell were dismissed by Wayne County Circuit Court Judge Gregory Bill following a court hearing that cited lack of evidence. At issue was whether she had violated the terms of her probation when police found a gun in her townhouse while searching for the youngster.

Bill also granted Dillard-Bothuell’s attorney requests to have her tether removed. Dillard-Bothuell is on probation from a 2013 weapons charge.

Probation officer LaTanya Bradford testified that under the terms of Dillard-Bothuell’s probation she is not to possess a gun or be around anyone else in possession of a firearm during a probationary period...

This article just popped up. It is from July 10, but I don't see it here.

Dad, stepmom of boy found in basement to be back in court next week

Referee Nicholas Bobak on Thursday scheduled a hearing on the petition concerning Charlie, and another regarding his two younger siblings for July 17, giving attorneys for Charlie’s father and stepmother time to gather materials in the case.

The hearing is about terminating the parental rights to all the children.

I think the Wayne County Prosecutor is awaiting blood/DNA results on Charlie's clothing and the PVC pipe before filing charges. Hopefully, this will happen early next week. If it can be proved that young Charlie was abused by his father and/or stepmother, I think that all three children will be removed from the Bothuell home permanently. :moo:

Still :waiting: for updates on this case. I hope that bad dad and wicked stepmother aren't going to get away with the phony disappearance story and excessive physical punishment of young Charlie.

In the meantime, I came across this article (with great photos!) while trying to find something new. I don't recall this being posted yet.

'I can an make you disappear': Boy, 12, locked in a basement for 11 days claims his stepmother spoke of 'sharp knives' and tormented him with endless workouts as officials move to strip parents of custody

Charlie Bothuell V, 12, was forced to do the grueling workouts every day, he claimed to police
Twice-a-day workouts included 100 pushups, 200 situps, 100 jumping jacks, 25 arm curls with a 25-pound weight and thousands of revolutions on an elliptical machine

The boy told investigators that stepmother Monique Dillard-Bothuell hid him in the basement with no food or water
Dillard-Bothuell's attorney claims the 12-year-old needed the workouts because he was overweight when he came to live with his father

It has also been revealed the boy was physically assaulted by father Charles Bothuell IV with a bloody PVC pipe found in the home...

Father, stepmom of Charlie Bothuell V due in court over parental rights

Oralandar Brand-Williams/The Detroit News

Detroit — The father and stepmother of Charlie Bothuell V, the 12-year-old boy found last month in the basement of his family home after being reported missing for 11 days, are due back in court Thursday.

The hearing is a continuation of a hearing held July 10 on a state petition to terminate the parental rights of Charlie Bothuell IV and Monique Dillard-Bothuell. Besides the 12-year-old boy, the couple also have a 4-year-old son and an 11-month-old daughter.

The state is citing neglect and abuse in their petition to have the children permanently removed from the couple’s home.

In court papers filed for a hearing last week in Wayne County Family Court, the youngster told authorities he was beaten with a PVC pipe by his father and also threatened by his stepmother not to make any noise while he was barricaded in the basement of the family's home while police searched for him during his disappearance...

DETROIT (WWJ/AP) - The father and stepmother of a missing 12-year-old Detroit boy who was found in the basement are returning to court for another hearing on their parental rights.

Charlie Bothuell IV and Monique Dillard-Bothuell are accused of abusing Charlie Bothuell V, who was reported missing for 11 days in June before police found him hiding in the basement of a multiple-unit condo building.

The court hearing Thursday is related to their rights to two other children, ages 4 and 11 months, as well as the father’s rights to Charlie.

The Bothuells deny any abuse, although the state says the father acknowledges striking his son with a PVC pipe. They haven’t been charged with a crime.

The children now are living elsewhere...

It's alarming that the case with child services stemming from this incident went from a missing child to child abuse to severance of parental rights in such short order. Especially disturbing is that they also want to do this with his children from his second wife.

We sleuthers are used to knocking the various child welfare agencies for letting so many children fall through the cracks.

I can only wonder what the State of Michigan has discovered about Charlie IV and his wife.
