Interesting tidbit:

5mAlex Mester @AlexMesterBlade
Blood samples sent to lab are collected from all babies born in MI, & stored after testing. Sample from #ChelseaBruck used in investigation.

Court on mid-morning break. return at 10:40

I don't think I realized that happened? Or if I'm really understanding what it says. So the state has a blood sample from everyone born here that is identifiable? I will add that I don't really mind that if it helps in things like this. I just find that quite amazing.

Same here. I did not know this, but am fine if it can help stop crimes like this.... or at least identify victims.

@alexmesterblade:
Next up, a forensic expert in fluids and DNA analysis with the Michigan State Police crime lab.

Now showing sealed paper bag, presumably containing the leotard itself. Has not been opened yet.

The expert, Sarah Barr, is opening the package herself after identifying the lab's seal with her initials and date.

Noticed two distinct blood stains inside leotard. Did not identify semen or saliva, but swabbed for skin cells on several areas of costume.

She also received a buccal swab for Daniel Clay in July, 2016, presumably after his arrest for death of #ChelseaBruck.

@toicreel reporter for @nbc24wnwo:

Courtroom visibily emotional as a forensic specialist holds up #chelseabruck 's leotard, notes damage at shoulder straps & crotch area.
Forensic Specialist also notes finding two blood stains in chest& lower left hip area on leotard of #chelseabruck

Next up, a forensic expert in fluids and DNA analysis with the Michigan State Police crime lab.

Showing photo of #ChelseaBruck's leotard/costume the expert analyzed for body fluids and DNA.

Now showing sealed paper bag, presumably containing the leotard itself. Has not been opened yet.

The expert, Sarah Barr, is opening the package herself after identifying the lab's seal with her initials and date.

Now holding up leotard, and confirming it is the one she received and analyzed. Will be placed in a sealed, clear plastic bag for handling.

Correction, bag is not being sealed. Pros indicates they may want to remove it at some point later in trial.

Noticed two distinct blood stains inside leotard. Did not identify semen or saliva, but swabbed for skin cells on several areas of costume.

She also received a buccal swab for Daniel Clay in July, 2016, presumably after his arrest for death of #ChelseaBruck.

Next up, another forensic expert. Jennifer Dillon works for Michigan State Police crime lab, analyzes and compares DNA.

Dillon was responsible for obtaining DNA profiles from samples taken by Barr.

Dillon was able to obtain a DNA profile from the leotard, and the wig that was also tested.

Breaking for lunch now. Jury to return at 1:15.

Ray Kisonas @RayKisonas

Day 3 of Clay trial and detective Sgt. Jeff Pauli testified that Chelsea's costume found at industrial site was blood stained

An artificial leaf from the Poison Ivy costume was found at the burial sight off Briar Hill Rd.

The shoulder straps and crotch area of Chelsea's costume found at abandoned building were torn or cut

Briar Hill Rd property owner John Marcon testifies that he was clearing brush and hauling in fill dirt when a truck got stuck

Marcon walked to rear of truck and found a body .

A photo is shown on large tv monitor of the body as it was found in the woods

A red shoe is later found on the same property .

Additional photos of skeletal remains underneath some large branches are shown on TV monitor in court .

Detective Sroka testified that evidence showed the body was covered with leaves and a large branch placed over the chest area

Detective Jeff Hooper testifies that the investigation changed from missing person to a homicide case

Defense attorney objects to admission of red shoe as evidence . Judge overrules

A pair of tights and a shoe were also located at the site where human remains were found

MSP forensic scientist Sara Barr takes the stand . She is determined to be an expert in body fluid identification and DNA

Scientist found blood stains on the inside of the leotard near the chest and left hip

The blood stains inside the costume measured around 6 by 5 inches on the chest and 4 by 3 inches on the hip

Jennifer Dillon, a second forensic scientist , obtained DNA profiles

Rizk has no reason to believe loose leaf from near #ChelseaBruck's remains did not come from the leotard found earlier.

Alex Mester‏ @AlexMesterBlade 26 minutes ago
Rizk said each leaf of #ChelseaBruck's costume was sewn individually to the leotard. Leotard is completely covered in leaves.

Alex Mester‏ @AlexMesterBlade 10 minutes ago
Rizk shows damage to strap of #ChelseaBruck's costume didn't come from sharp implement like knife. Likely torn or blunt object like keys.

Alex Mester‏ @AlexMesterBlade 3 minutes ago
Rizk: Leotard hemline reinforced w/ elastic. "In my opinion, it was constructed better than a typical t-shirt and I can’t tear a t-shirt.”
2nd leotard strap similarly damaged. Now examining damage to crotch of #ChelseaBruck's costume.

J. RIZK | testifies leaf found at Briar Hill is a match to those used on the Poison Ivy costume #ChelseaBruck wore the night she was killed

Rizk: Crotch area also torn or damaged by a blunt instrument like keys, teeth, etc. or combination thereof. Not consistent with normal wear.

Rizk: Damage also not consistent with wearer removing garment quickly. Would have required more force than that to sever. #ChelseaBruck

Oh man poor Chelsea. My heart goes out to her and her Family. What she endured and now what her Family must endure. This testimony really hits as to the level of violence.

Rizk did not perform experiments on costume to see what force would be required to cause such damage. Would have jeopardized the evidence.

Rizk: Severances would have been a process, not single event like quick cut w/ knife. I understand that as taking more time to sever.

Trial of Daniel Clay, accused of killing #ChelseaBruck, to resume shortly. Expect to continue testimony of forensic experts for prosecution.

Next expert witness is Andrea Young, who in earlier testimony was said to have analyzed and compared DNA profiles in #ChelseaBruck case.

Young removed #ChelseaBruck's DNA profile obtained from leotard samples & entered into national database DNA of the other major contributor.

Profile was compared weekly w/ ~15M profiles from evidence and known individuals in database. Later received a hit, investigators notified.

Young confirmed Daniel Clay's DNA from buccal swab is consistent with 2nd significant contributor to sample from leotard.

Leotard sample had 2 significant contributors to DNA, #ChelseaBruck and Daniel Clay. Defense now cross-examining.

Another forensic scientist up now from MI state police. She is an expert in textiles, fibers, etc.

Believe this expert's name is Jennifer Rizk. She does several things, but about half her cases are related to fiber.

Rizk now handling leotard to show jury the severed shoulder straps and crotch. #ChelseaBruck

Now to show photos taken by Rizk during close examination of leotard at her lab. Previously said leotard was "well-constructed."

Rizk also compared leaf found near remains to those on the leotard found earlier. Leotard did have at least 5 missing leaves.

Rizk said each leaf of #ChelseaBruck's costume was sewn individually to the leotard. Leotard is completely covered in leaves.

Rizk has no reason to believe loose leaf from near #ChelseaBruck's remains did not come from the leotard found earlier.

Rizk: Damage also not consistent with wearer removing garment quickly. Would have required more force than that to sever.

Defense now cross-examining. Rizk has been on the stand nearly an hour testifying about fabric damage to leotard, comparison of loose leaf.

Rizk did not perform experiments on costume to see what force would be required to cause such damage. Would have jeopardized the evidence.

Rizk: Severances would have been a process, not single event like quick cut w/ knife. I understand that as taking more time to sever.

Court breaking for a bit. Rizk was testifying just over an hour. Has been dismissed, new witness to be called upon return to trial.

Det. Sroka recalled to turn leotard inside out to show jury the interior. Previous testimony indicates blood stains on the inside.

Visible darker discoloration on what would have been the chest area of the leotard, and another lower down by the waist or hip.

Side note: All experts thus far have been female. Next is Megan (sp?) Moore, a forensic anthropologist, I believe.

Moore examined #ChelseaBruck's remains at medical examiner's office. Processed/examined remaining soft tissue before removing from bones.

Moore identified small anchor tattoo on tissue behind the right ear. An anchor was a common image used in #ChelseaBruck search, memorial.

Remains showed evidence of some animal scavenging.

Chelsea Bruck murder case: Detectives discuss Halloween costume evidence, discovery of body

MONROE COUNTY, Mich. - The Chelsea Bruck murder trial continued Wednesday as detectives took the stand describing the investigation and evidence collected.

Daniel Clay, 27 of Newport, is charged with second-degree murder in connection with Bruck’s death. According to authorities, Clay was linked to the death with DNA evidence obtained by Michigan State Police.

A jury was seated Monday for the man accused of killing 22-year-old Chelsea Bruck in 2014. Her disappearance from a Halloween party in Frenchtown Township prompted searches across several counties. Her remains were found a year later in Ash Township...

Moore now showing plastic demonstration skull where she has placed markers where fractures were found on #ChelseaBruck's skull.

Lack of fractures on bridge of nose indicates similar fractures in orbital areas did not come from a single blow, Moore said.

Now showing photos of cleaned skull of #ChelseaBruck, pointing out fractures and telltale signs of trauma at/around time of death.

#ChelseaBruck's family is still holding up well. Clay is alternatley looking at the photos on TV screen and table in front of him

Moore: In addition to fractures to both eye sockets, third fracture to lower jaw. Photos of cleaned jaw showing now.

Photos from location of remains shows jaw fracture visible before body was collected as evidence.

Moore: Log found covering #ChelseaBruck's remains could not have caused facial fractures without also damaging nasal bridge (none found).

Defense asking if falls, body being dropped could have caused injuries. Moore: Jaw yes, orbital fractures much less likely w/o nasal injury.

Questions related to possible damage from face hitting car door have me wondering if some testimony to that effect will come later.

Court is finished for the day. To return tomorrow morning
