Sarah Barr - CSI

Was involved in evidence and DNA analysis in Chelsea’s case. Processed costume/leotard, found area with possible blood on inside, two areas, swabbed straps and leg openings. Shoulder straps and crotch was cut or torn. possible blood was in center of chest area, left side of hip area. Explains collection process. one swab possible blood, two swabs possible skin. She was asked about semen but I could not hear or it wasn’t clear if she found any or not.

july 28th got dna sample from clay, processed it. explains process.

Def:

Has her explain handling of evidence and if the evidence is sealed, if it is labelled etc (chain of custody again). Has her explain how they ensure evidence is not contaminated, which she does thoroughly. Has her clarify that she sent along the costume samples and clay’s sample, asks her where she puts them. Asks if she is a DNA analyst (yes), asks why the jobs are separated (not sure what he is referring to). In this case she did the analysis on 5 samples, the costume, clay, and other individuals. Def clarifying she only analyzed some but not all of the collected samples. He is trying to uncover whether there was potential contamination. She says it is digital comparison, not physical comparison (ie the samples are not in the presence of one another). A person makes the determination whether there is a match. Asking her how a comparison is made in Codis. She explains the system matches, then a person confirms. Continued exhaustive questioning on how the samples are matched. There has been no case of cross contamination in the michigan state crime lab to her knowledge.

Jennifer (didnt get last name) - Forensic Scientist

Pro has her recount her commendations - she is highly qualified

Specializes in DNA analysis, body fluid identification, blood pattern analysis, CSI

Pro moves to admit her as DNA expert.

April 10 received evidence to process them (the samples Sarah placed in evidence locker)

Her job is to obtain DNA profile from the evidence. Explains process. She got profile, then turned it over to Andrea Young who did the comparison.

Def:

Asked her which samples she had custody of. 3 samples, two gathered and one comparison. Asks about how evidence is stored - she explains there is a sticker, they are closed. Is there any way to know if they were opened? She says the samples are inside a container inside a sealed envelope and were not disturbed (heat sealed with a logo).

Andrea Young is up. I have to step away for a bit!

Side note ( I drove by the house site about a year ago and it had a for sale sign and didn't look to have been built on any more.) I wonder if they prohibited the continuing of the building or the owner chose to stop.

The 10+ acres next to the property where she was found was up for sale and recently sold by a retired couple who moved out of state... The sale had nothing to do with this case. The owners of the property where she was found were definitely not prohibited from building, although they struggled with the decision to build or not, and their new house construction is currently underway.

Same deal with Andrea, def asking her to explain how she handled the evidence, how they prevent cross-contamination. Did she clean her workstation between each sample? He asks what is to prevent the samples from cross contamination then? She explains she only works with one at a time and they are closed, so there is nothing to fly through the air and contaminate them.

The CSI on the stand right now is essentilly saying Chelsea's leotard was of good quality and was torn off her.

ETA: She is a "fabric expert"

IMO this witness is important to show the potential violence involved - remember they had statements from Chelsea's friends about how much work she put into the costume, how she was concerned about it after hitting her face - that she probably wouldn't have been ok with him just ripping it off her (plus she had no change of clothes!)

Has Clay ever put his glasses on, or are they just a prop?

  • #618
witness currently on stand: choking takes more than 20-30 seconds to produce death; could cause unconsciousness, but would have to continue constant pressure for another 2 to 2 1/2 minutes to deplete the oxygen and cause death.

I wondered the same thing. I saw him put them on his face at one point but it's not like he's reading anything. But he does have a yellow piece of paper he keeps fumbling with.
