The alleged incident occurred on Wednesday, Oct. 22 when David Scott, Jr., 43, picked his child up from Pleasantview Elementary School in Eastpointe, per a press release from the Macomb County Prosecutor's Office. Scott allegedly became upset when he found out his child did not get a snack at snack time that day.

This is why I was so relieved when my dh retired from teaching elementary school (2nd grade) 25 years ago! And people are so much worse now. Such trauma for everyone, even with no shooting. Plus, there’s always the possibility his child was lying in hopes of getting another snack on the way home. It happens.

Apparently no one got a snack. This was a first grade class.

“Our understanding is that nobody in class got snack time after recess,” Holish said, noting that while students received lunch after recess, a new teacher scrapped any extra time for treats.

“By no means was the student singled out. The whole class did not get a snack time.”

So I guess it could have been worse if more gun-toting parents got upset over their children not getting a snack that day. People are getting really cuckoo. JMO!

A deranged Michigan father

Prosecutors said a search warrant at Scott’s home uncovered multiple rounds of ammunition.

Officials said he was charged as a fourth-offense habitual offender — meaning he was previously convicted for similar crimes, though the details of those offenses were not disclosed.

He was ordered to undergo a mental health evaluation and will be required to wear an ankle monitor if released from custody.

He is due back in court on Nov. 5.

scary and not his first time apparently. I used to imagine I wanted to be a social worker or an elementary teacher when I was a kid growing up. You couldn't pay me enough to do either at this point. Not that anybody would because both professions are grossly underpaid and understaffed.

I remember a father of one of my husband’s students got mad about something trivial and was yelling at my dh in the office in front of the secretaries. They got him to leave, but when my husband told me about it I said, “What if he comes back tomorrow with a gun?!” All he could do was shrug. It was a small rural school with no security. And even now, you can’t keep parents out of schools, so the school staff and students are sitting ducks.

When I went to school no one got 'snacks', there were no snacks for kids in school we only had lunch during lunch time. When did they start giving kids snacks in school? Is this all across the country or just Michigan? He has prior offenses, "Scott was arraigned Thursday on charges of possession of ammunition by a prohibited person, making an intentional threat to commit an act of violence against a school, school employees or students and disorderly person. He is charged as a fourth-time habitual offender". Dad threatens to shoot up elementary school after child didn’t get snack time: police He evidently has an anger problem and an itchy trigger finger. This guy is a bomb waiting to go off.

A parent is facing felony charges after allegedly threatening a teacher at Pleasantview Elementary School in Eastpointe.

According to Eastpointe police Lt. Alexander Holish, officers were dispatched to the school at 3:30 p.m. on Oct. 22 to investigate a threat to “shoot up the school.”

Investigators learned David Scott Jr., 43, who was upset that his child did not get a “snack time” approached a teacher during dismissal and began questioning him about why the student was not allowed the respite.

According to witnesses, the parent then started screaming, cursing, and threatening the teacher in front of staff, parents, and students...

You know, when I first read the title to this column I read it as, 'MY Dad threatens to shoot up elementary school because his child didn't get a snack at snack time' and did kind of a double take 😆

Thanks for the link, @Barbb .

Also from the link:

Tykeissia Watkins, the child’s mother, told local ABC affiliate WXYZ that their son has been coming home from school hungry for weeks, as he’ll sometimes skip lunch due to being overwhelmed by loud noises.

“I mean yes, we get upset as parents and certain things could’ve been said, but
I do not believe that that came out of his mouth," Watkins, who was not present for the incident, said about the threats Scott is accused of making."

Red emphasis mine.

How nice that mom is defending him.

This entire episode is making me wonder if maybe the children's living environment needs a closer look ?
What kind of example is this man and possibly the mother, setting for his child ?
Etc.
Imo.

If this child can't handle being in the lunchroom, he needs to be evaluated for autism or other disorders.

This family sounds like a trainwreck in progress.

Is the child on the spectrum (actually diagnosed and not simply parent determined)? Does the child have an EIP? This sounds an awful lot like excuses from the mom? And how does she explain the child's father's previous threatening behaviors? I'll wait to hear something that supports her child being special needs. For now it appears Mr Scott simply has a serious case of "specialitis" MOO and layman's diagnosis.

Ms Watkins, if your child can’t handle the cafeteria you need to TALK to the teacher and come up with a solution. You don’t let him come home hungry for weeks!

You made a very wise choice. I did my first social work practicum in support services to education, because that was my career goal, and LOL NOPE! What an absolutely soul-crushing experience. Understaffed doesn't even begin to cover it. My supervisor was responsible for SIX schools, two of them high schools. Insane.

look on the bright side. unlike many of the fathers we read about around here, this one can't be accused of not caring about his kid

unfortunately in my experience as a teacher, it may not mean that either. In fact, I'd say it's likely it does not. He's just entitled and narcissistic IMO. Sees his child as an extension of himself and a possession, ergo a perceived insult to his child is an insult to him. While I have not experienced this kind of threat, parents who act this way are IMO, IME never actually good parents.

I'm not so sure about that, if you think about it.

"a new teacher..." that makes it sound as if there used to be snack time... (not defending the violence)...maybe the child used to get a snack :(

YES, grossly underpaid and understaffed. My niece works at a school for 'troubled' students because she wants to make a difference for kids who really need the help. And she has had a couple of kind of scary incidents in the classroom over the past 20 years. [Although for the most part she LOVES it and has a room full of lovely notes and gifts from her former students. ]

However she says the scariest things are parent teacher meetings or even just incidents with parents trying to speak to her after school. They no longer allow parents on to the campus anymore, as it is a high school, so no need. But a couple of times in the past, an angry parent would be right there in the teachers parking lot when she left school. And she said some are way more troubled and angry than their offspring. And they believe whatever their kids say, like the teacher is unfair, wouldn't let me take the make up test, or some silly lie---and they come wanting to literally fight her!

I heard an interesting story from an elder gentlemen some months back. He was speaking at a forum and talked about growing up and going to school in the ~1940s IIRC on the East Coast of the US. He is ~95 years old and quite spry and wonderful to hear his telling of history in his time.

He spoke about his belief on the absence of discipline today. And respect. And that also translates to school. And students. As a young child in school, if he was in trouble and his mother came to the school…… his mother was looking for him. Not the teacher. He was the one in trouble. Yes the teacher was also in discussion on things. But the actions were because of the student.

Reading this thread reminded me of his story telling at the forum. MOO
