MI - Dearborn Officer Fatally Shoots Unarmed Man

From what I have read about statements made by the male witness he seems to be telling the truth as he saw and heard it. What I do question is how can he be sure who said 'Stop it, Stop it.' By his own words he did not see the struggle at the time the words were spoken. He doesn't seem to know either person as he uses descriptions instead of names to identify them. How does he know who's voice was saying the words?

The witness claimed to have seen and heard the struggle before they moved out of his sight.

“I heard some arguing, and then it sounded like someone got slammed into a wood fence, because I heard the wood crack,” he said. “I looked (across his fence into the backyard of a home on Whitcomb) to see what was going on, and I saw a guy wearing beige pants and a purple jacket, kind of wrestling with a cop.

He likely could have put a voice with a person at this moment - especially with any commands given by the officer. Jmo.

I agree that is possible. I do belive he is being honest by what he thought he heard. I just also think it is possible that he is mistaken in who he thought was saying the words.

Private autopsy says Detroit man was shot 5-6 times by Dearborn police

The Detroit man who died in an encounter with a Dearborn police officer was shot five to six times, once from "very close range," according to a private autopsy report obtained by the Free Press.

Requested by the family of Kevin Matthews, the autopsy report on the 36-year-old man offers new details about the Dec. 23 shooting in Detroit near the border with Dearborn that sparked civil rights protests. Family members say Matthews, who was an African American, suffered from mental health problems and was unarmed.

The Wayne County Medical Examiner's Office has not released the full report from the original autopsy that it conducted in December. The office said in December that Matthews died from homicide caused by multiple gunshot wounds, but it did not release additional details.

Two weeks ago, the U.S. Department of Justice announced it will be working with Dearborn police to review their use of force practices and help increase diversity.

Prosecutor’s office to decide whether shooting of unarmed man was justified

The Detroit Police Department recently wrapped up its investigation of the Dec. 23 shooting of Kevin Matthews and it is now up to Wayne County Prosecutor Kym Worthy to decide whether the shooting was justified.

“The prosecutor’s office has received a warrant request and it is being reviewed at this time,” prosecutor’s spokeswoman Maria Miller said Tuesday.

Dearborn police officer investigated after allegation

Dearborn’s Police chief said his department is investigating an officer for alleged misconduct.

...

The chief’s remarks come in the wake of a WXYZ-TV (Channel 7) report claiming an officer had been suspended without pay after he was accused of groping a woman during a traffic stop.

The officer investigation follows other high-profile probes involving Dearborn police.

In April, federal officials announced plans to review the Dearborn Police Department’s use of force policies as well as provide additional training to officers in the wake of two fatal shootings in the past year involving city police officers.

Dearborn Sued for $10M In Fatal Shooting of Unarmed Black Man

The estate of a man fatally shot after a foot chase with police last year is suing the city of Dearborn for $10 million. The wrongful death lawsuit, filed Friday in U.S. District Court, also accuses a police officer, who has not been publicly identified by the Dearborn Police Department, of using excessive force last December when he shot Kevin Matthews, 35, nine times.

The plaintiffs are asking for $10 million against the city an $10 million against the officer.
