Eastern Michigan University hires 6 police officers in plan to boost off-campus patrols

Full-time officers will undergo months of training before joining force

Eastern Michigan University has hired six police officers as part of a larger plan to boost security following the slayings of two students since late 2012 and other assaults.

The Ypsilanti school said Wednesday that the full-time officers have been sworn in and will undergo four months of training before joining the regular rotation of patrols. They are part of a plan to assist in expanding the force's off-campus presence...

Pre-trial hearings scheduled for 2 men in slaying of Eastern Michigan football player Reed

Two Detroit men face pre-trial hearings in the robbery and fatal shooting of Eastern Michigan University football player Demarius Reed.

The hearings are scheduled Tuesday afternoon for Kristopher Pratt and Ed Thomas in Washtenaw County Trial Court in Ann Arbor.

The 20-year-olds are charged with open murder and armed robbery. An open murder charge means that the jury can choose to convict them of either first- or second-degree murder...

Co-Defendant Gives Chilling Details Into Shooting Of EMU Football Player

DETROIT (WWJ) – One of the men accused in the death of an Eastern Michigan University football player testified Thursday against a second defendant — as part of a plea deal.

Twenty-year old Kristopher Pratt admitted to the jury that he shot Demarius Reed last October at Reed’s Ypsilanti apartment complex.

But Pratt told the court that co-defendant Ed Thomas came up with the idea to rob Reed of his money and a white iPhone.

Dressed in a suit with a purple shirt and tie – Thomas continually shook his head during testimony.

Pratt testified that it was an alcohol-fueled night of partying that led up to the shooting of Reed...

Ed Thomas, 21 of Detroit, was charged with open murder, armed robbery and conspiracy to commit armed robbery, said Ypsilanti police Lt. Thomas Eberts. The jury determined he was not guilty on all counts

A man who confessed to robbing and killing Eastern Michigan University wide receiver Demarius Reed has been sentenced to 18 to 30 years in prison.

Kristopher Pratt apologized to the family of the 20-year-old Chicago native before Washtenaw County trial Judge Donald Shelton issued the sentence Tuesday.
