U.S. Marshalls Find 123 Missing Children In Michigan

Detroit, MI – The U.S. Marshals Service – Detroit Missing Child Recovery Unit, U.S. Marshals Service Sex Offender Investigations Branch, Michigan State Police and law enforcement officers from Wayne County agencies participated in Operation MISafeKid, a missing juvenile sweep to identify and recover missing children from the area with an emphasis on locating victims of sex trafficking.

Out of 301 files of missing children, 123 were identified and recovered safely during the operation. All 123 children were physically located and interviewed — standard protocol for the Michigan State Police. All of the children located were interviewed about potentially being sexually victimized or used in a sex trafficking ring during their period of time that they were deemed missing. Three cases were identified as being possible sex trafficking cases, and one homeless teen was transported back to the command post after it was discovered that he had not had anything to eat in three days. He was then debriefed and turned over to Child Protective Services for aftercare.

The one-day effort took place on Sept. 26. Investigators from several agencies worked together to safely recover 123 missing children. The task force targeted 310 children who have been reported missing.

U.S. Marshals say all of the children located were interviewed about potentially being sexually victimized or used in a sex trafficking ring during their period of time that they were deemed missing. Three cases were identified as being possible sex trafficking cases, and one homeless teen was transported back to the command post after it was discovered that he had not had anything to eat in three days.

The children were located in various spots after authorities evaluated each case, talked to friends and family members, spoke with school officials and worked to find each missing child.

Thank you Katy. This is a great start. Good job Michigan!

I saw this news report yesterday and found it unusual that there was no mention of any arrests. Wonder why? Where were these kids found? Who were they living with? If they were involved in sex trafficking, you would think the people holding them would have been arrested.

This news report states that most of the kids were found in "safe-keeping". Not sure what that means. It says only 3 of the kids they found were possible victims of sex trafficking.

This is a rather mysterious case for now. I hope they reveal a little more about what happened to these kids and arrest those responsible.

123 missing children located, 3 saved from possible sex trafficking, in Mich. operation

They were able to locate 123 of the children, 119 of them presumably in safe keeping. All the children authorities contacted were “interviewed about potentially being sexually victimized or used in a sex trafficking ring during their period of time that they were deemed missing.”

In addition to the three potential sex trafficking victims, a fourth homeless teenager was taken and turned into the care of Child Protective Services.

I would guess, from the way it's been worded, that many of these were runaways - probably teens - or were staying with friends or other family and had been reported missing by parents/carers. Technically missing but probably not in so much danger. It seems that simple policework was all that was needed to find these kids... talking to the schools, friends and family. Why that wasn't done earlier for these cases, I'm not sure. It's not a case of '123 children were kidnapped and being kept by the same people' or even '123 children were kidnapped and being kept by different people', it seems. Still, these juveniles are now known to be safe, three potential sex trafficking victims have been saved, and one homeless teen's life may have been saved too. I hope they continue to work on the other 178 missing kids files.

MOO.

Thank you - I did start this thread yesterday in Up To The Minute (because I lack experience starting threads) so thank you for getting it where it needs to be, Katy.

Regardless of whether or not these kids were "runaways" - it is still pretty good and IMPORTANT work IMO.

Applause for this one.

These were previously missing minors that LE went to locate and interview about possible sexual abuse when they were considered missing. The headlines I first saw were incredibly misleading.
