Missing teen with Asperger's Syndrome believed to be on bike miles from home

MANISTEE COUNTY, Mich., (WPBN/WGTU) — A Manistee County mother and police are looking for a missing teenage boy whom they say was last seen late Monday night.

Julie Shively says her 16-year-old son, Garrett Sheaks, went missing Monday night around 11 p.m. She believes he took off on his bike and may be in danger due to the current winter weather conditions.

Shively says Garrett has Asperger's Syndrome and has had some troubles in school and in his personal life recently; she says he has been depressed and may be suicidal.

According to Shively, her son does not have a cell phone and they do not believe he has any cash or money on him.

She describes her son as 5’10” weighing about 150-160 pounds with dark brown eyes and dark colored hair. Shively believes Garrett is wearing a dark coat, dark colored pants, a black winter stocking cap and has a black backpack.

He is believed to be riding his bike which is black with silver or grey lettering.

Right now, police and deputies across several counties are assisting the search.

Shively learned her son may have been spotted at a gas station near the intersection of M-55 and M-37 Tuesday morning. She says there is a chance Garrett may be trying to get to his brother's place at Saginaw Valley State University or his grandfather's house in Gladwin County. Both locations are more than two hours from his Manistee County home by motorized vehicle.

Shively and law enforcement ask anyone who may have seen Garrett call local police or deputies immediately.

"I love him and I want him to come home," Shively cried. "He may be trying to take shelter or anywhere he can find to keep warm, if anyone who sees this that has an abandoned shed or garage please check, please help me bring him home."

Garrett is a junior at Manistee High School.

Currently, police from several counties are involved with the search including the Michigan State Police, along with several local agencies like road commissions or mail carriers.

A Manistee County sheriff said there are reports that he might have been spotted at a gas station near the intersection of M-55 and M-37 in Cadillac on Tuesday. Right now, nothing has been confirmed on the potential sighting. His mother said her son does not know anyone in Cadillac; however, it is possible the sighting was Garrett, given the description from the gas station clerk.

Garrett might be headed toward family, as his brother attends at Saginaw Valley State University and his grandfather has a home in Gladwin County. The two locations are within a two hour radius of his home via transportation by a motorized vehicle.

Deputies are actively searching for the teenager.

Sheaks has Asperger Syndrome.

When he approached the camper at 9 p.m.and knocked on the door, he told the people inside that he was extremely cold and had numbness in his feet.

The campers called 911.

Sheaks later told police he had taken shelter in a bathroom at the south end of the state park. Police found a bike and his belongings at the bathroom.
