Detroit Robert Bashara appeared at his arraignment Wednesday and told a magistrate he is trying raise money to hire an attorney to defend him on charges that he killed his wife.
Bashara, wearing a blue prison uniform with the number 856261 stenciled on the back, stood with his hands folded before 36th District Court Magistrate Laura Echartea as she read the charges against him which include first degree murder and obstruction of justice in connection with the homicide of his wife Jane Bashara.
When told him that the preliminary exam is set for May 7, Bashara said "May I ask for more time? At this point I'm trying to raise funds for an attorney.
The magistrate denied his request for a delay and told him that if he hadn't hired an attorney by May 7 one will be appointed for him. No bond was given.

Last month, attorney Mark Kriger, who previously represented Bashara, said Bashara denied involvement in his wifes death. Kriger is not currently representing Bashara but said he plans to meet with him to discuss representation.
