I'm having a hard time wrapping my brain around the fact that she was deceased in her own bedroom for days and the roommates were none the wiser. Crazy!

I wonder when she last spoke to her family?

they seemed so close!

I wonder where her twin went to college...

Her twin went to EMU as well, she recently graduated.

Very sad. :(

On a side note, I can't read EMU and think of anything other than Steely Dan.

Me too :) I posted on one of SD's threads a while ago that Emu could also be EMU - Eastern Michigan University (down the road about 7 miles from Ann Arbor and the University of Michigan).

:waitasec: Wouldn't the smell of decomp set in after a couple of days?

I think so! That's what I've been trying to get at... you know, say it without saying it... but YES!!

I'm sure that college life is different now than it was when I was in school in the late 60s, but I can't imagine not being concerned if I hadn't seen or heard from a roommate for a couple of days. We didn't have sticky notes or cell phones  but I usually knew where my roommates were headed and with whom because we looked out for one another. Even if I didn't see suitemates daily (rare), I noticed whether or not they had used the shared bathroom :D If someone in your family is away at college, please be sure that they have roommates/suitemates who are generally aware of their whereabouts so that you can be contacted promptly in case of an emergency. :moo:

EMU community asks for answers following student's death

Eastern Michigan University community members didn’t get many of the answers they’d hoped to get at a campus safety meeting Wednesday following the apparent homicide of Julia Niswender.

University officials organized the meeting in the EMU Student Center’s auditorium Wednesday afternoon, less than 24 hours after Niswender was found dead in her apartment. According to police, she hadn’t been seen for several days before one of her suitemates asked officers check on her at 9:30 pm. Tuesday.

The reports thatJulia had not been seen (by suite mates) for several.days still leaves me baffled...

Does that mean that no one else (except the murderer(s). ) have seen her in several days, too?

what about professors/classmates...

Job at Walmart...

Boyfriend (if she has one)...

what does "several" mean... 4...5...6...7... Days?

Niswender’s roommate called police because she had not seen or heard from her in a few days. They lived in the Peninsular Apartments just north of campus. The way the apartments are set up inside, students tell 7 Action News, that it is possible not to know if your roommate is inside their room or not and not see them for a few days.

“They share a living room and a dining room and their own bedroom. Some have their own bathroom. Some share a bathroom,” said Bernoris Carter. He said each bedroom has a lock with a key. “You get your own key and everything so you can lock it from the inside and the outside,” he said.

If you search on twitter "RIP Julia Niswender" there is a comment made about seeing her in class on Monday, so maybe the suite mate had just not seen her in days.

Ok, so it's almost like an apartment within an apartment? I remember reading some of that complex's reviews in the links Nursebeeme posted upthread. One of the reviews talked about how the property management staff doesn't do a great job of matching people up with roommates. I wonder how close Julia was to her roommates? Maybe they had opposite schedules, and it wasn't unusual for them not to see each other for a few days at a time. Doesn't explain what I imagine would be an overwhelming smell after several days...

... Maybe the smell got unbearable, which is what caused them to call the police at 9:30 at night?

Maybe because I'm cynical, but between the stench and the fact that I hadn't seen my roommate in days, I don't think it would have taken me too long to put 2 and 2 together. JMO.

some interesting comments below this article... Especially the last one!

What in the heck was that last guy trying to say?! Some kind of code or something? Maybe just crazy? Both? Gave me chills, honestly.

I am glad you saw it the way I did... Because I could not follow it at all!:what:

If the Monday class sighting... And I am assuming Monday, 12-10-12..... Is correct... Then that closes the timeline down some...

Not only that, but it might explain why there weren't more "obvious" signs of a decomposing body in the bedroom. JMO.

There's a comment at the end of the article from an ex-employee of that complex. He discusses security at the place, and that each bedroom not only has a lock (from the inside), but also a deadbolt. This person speculates that Julia likely knew whoever killed her. I tend to agree. Obviously the roommates didn't find any sign of a break-in, or they'd have contacted LE prior to now. Sounds like she trusted whoever it may be enough to let them into her room.

Yes.... I agree.... Or someone who had access to the keys at the apartment complex....

did anyone quit real recently?... Etc.....

Just some thoughts.....

I'll assume that you're referring to the comments by J.O. Parts of the nonsensical rant that I can decipher:

- '67-68 (height of Viet Nam war with widespread college protests)

- John Norman Collins (serial killer who targeted women on or near the EMU campus in the early 1970s)

- Cecilia Cichan (sp?) (lone survivor of NWA Flight #255 that took off from DTW during a storm in August, 1987)

I haven't the slightest idea WTF any of that comment means :what:
