Ypsilanti police Detective Sgt. Thomas Eberts said police found evidence he called “suspicious” and led to “unanswered questions,” causing police to call Niswender’s death an apparent homicide. At the campus safety meeting Wednesday, EMU Police Chief Bob Heighes was tasked with explaining to the approximately 200 members of the community why he couldn’t release that information.
“This is an Ypsilanti police case, not an EMU Police case,” Heighes said. “We are assisting them wherever and whenever we can with information involving our student. A lot of things we don’t have information on because it’s not our case.”

more info on times.. it would seem that she was found pretty quickly after the response call

Officers responded at about 9:15 p.m. Tuesday to Peninsular Place apartments in the 1000 block of Huron River Drive, where Niswender was found dead in an apartment unit. The off-campus apartment is located just north of EMU's campus.

Huron Valley Ambulance spokeswoman Joyce Williams said two ambulances were sent to the scene at about 9:40 p.m. There was nothing paramedics could do for the woman, who she said was pronounced dead at the scene.

questions list: (feel free to add)

1) who last saw her
2) was her cell phone found? Have records been reviewed?
3) who had access to the apartment/were frequent guests of all suitemates?
4) door would seem to be locked if it took the police call to open the door to the bedroom. Prints on the door or signs of forced entry on the window? Where were her keys? If door was locked from the inside keys should be there and the window unlocked (perp left that way).. If he left out of the door and locked it from the outside then keys would be missing and perhaps that is one of the "suspicious circumstances"?
5) did she miss any work or classes? It would seem based on her personality and what her profs have said that she is a standout person and student and would be missed in class (albeit finals are going on so schedules may be slightly off if you will)
6) any recent work orders called in on the unit?
7) what were normal times of day that paths would cross with suitemates.. how long could they go without seeing one another in a normal week

I would just add: Did roommates hear anything strange coming from the direction of Julia's room at any point in time? Something that maybe seemed innocent at the time, but now feels a little odd.

I would also add: apartment reviews have frequent complaints about how "thin" the walls are.. were the walls of her bedroom facing the street by parking on the first floor or were they inward and abutting another unit and if so did anyone hear anything

Did Julia spend weekends with friend/s who didn't live on/near campus? Since roommates weren't alarmed when they didn't see her for a few days, I wonder if Julia was accustomed to being elsewhere on weekends.

she seemed to love her family and her family dog (from twitter pics)

she also, from comments, was also well loved at a Meijers store in Monroe were she worked while in CC.

Bette, I agree about her family.. I think maybe they called around to roomies? not sure

I am SURE this case will be the talk....after the 2006 murder cover up-mass firing at EMU- lack of communication, etc.

That's the school my son graduated from, so this is scary. He also had an off campus apartment but his was in an old house that had been converted into apartments. He moved out of the dorm because his dorm room-mates stole everything of his that wasn't nailed down and they constantly sold drugs out of the shared space in the room. A lot went on that he didn't like or want to be involved in, so he got his own apartment.

Such a tragedy.

I grew up near both EMU and her hometown of Monroe, and I'm quite familiar with both areas. My sister graduated from EMU.

WXYZ is running a new story that contains more detail about the suitemate situation:

She was found dead in the locked bedroom of her apartment in Ypsilanti, an apartment she shared with two other women.

One of her roommates called police when she hadn't seen Julia in two days and the alarm clock in Julia's bedroom kept going off.

I'll assume that you're referring to the comments by J.O. Parts of the nonsensical rant that I can decipher:

- '67-68 (height of Viet Nam war with widespread college protests)

- John Norman Collins (serial killer who targeted women on or near the EMU campus in the early 1970s)

- Cecilia Cichan (sp?) (lone survivor of NWA Flight #255 that took off from DTW during a storm in August, 1987)

I haven't the slightest idea WTF any of that comment means :what:

Ooh...ooh...can I try translating? I'm from the area, so some of the words are familiar to me!

is history repeating? we know about the rural hasting girl LAURA and 4AM visit bye ORANGE to HOMICIDE HILL DORM

Laura Dickinson = EMU student murdered in on-campus dorm 12/13/2006. Hill Hall was the name of the dorm. A man named Orange Taylor III was convicted of her murder.

under president fallon or obama's JCS admiral fallon...

EMU president at time of Laura's murder was John A. Fallon. He was fired in the fallout after Laura's murder. It was a major scandal for the university, which was found in violation of the Clery Act for not promptly notifying students of an on-campus rape/murder.

I don't get the Obama reference - must be confusing Admiral William Fallon with university president John A. Fallon? BTW - John Fallon works for Ball State University now, he does not work for President Obama. LOL

the rural girl just got back from a rowing party...

Rural girl must be Laura again. Her hometown of Hastings, MI is a rural small town. She also rowed on EMU's crew team.

we know kwame proposed a african NAVY academy on bell isle and live in dorms at the row club site at the boat club.. we know that jury rigging it is called SAILING in slang terms...

Sounds like some wacky conspiracy stuff about Kwame Kilpatrick, former mayor of Detroit, who has some well documented legal issues.

and granholm and kwame met at the elwood to get rid of HOMICIDE HILL and rural farmer posthumus like the hasting girl...

He's alleging that Jennifer Granholm (former Michigan governor) and Kwame Kilpatrick met at the Elwood Bar and Grill (a popular diner across from where the Detroit Lions and Detroit Tigers play). Apparently to conspire to get rid of 2 people: Dick Posthumus, who was Jennifer Granholm's opponent in the 2002 gubernatorial election, and Gil Hill, a former Detroit cop who was Kwame's opponent in the 2001 Detroit mayorial election. (Fun fact - Gil Hill also played Inspector Todd in the Beverly Hills Cop movies.)

we know bing says 67 now like 68 tet in nam and we know syracuse had hundreds of dead students caused bye a muslim bomb on a boeing.

Dave Bing is the current mayor of Detroit. He graduated from Syracuse University. I have no idea what 'nam and muslim bombs have to do with that.

so orange killed the EMU student on the hill a EAGLE, a sign of christian rome army.

Orange Taylor killed Laura. Apparently crazy man is trying to connect the Syracuse Orangemen with Orange Taylor? EMU's mascot is the Eagle. No idea what the Christian Rome Army has to do with anything.

the only evidence on orange was sperm on the dead rural girl. so maybe orange did not do it?

Orange's sperm was found on Laura's leg - that was the key evidence that led to his arrest and conviction.

a serial collins killer? like alabama and ROW ON BIG WHEELER( the JCS of viet nam)

Collins = John Normal Collins, as BetteDavisEyes already stated. Not entirely sure where he was going with the Alabama and Vietnam references?

or when the boeing went down on middle belt in 87 when the pope visited and said we have music in our hearts... st cecelia survived the crash the patron saint of music and went to alabama! but henry Ford II died on the pennisula... music lives on...

Northwest Flight 255 crashed onto Middlebelt Road shortly after taking off at Detroit Metro airport in 1987. A little girl named Ceceilia Cichan was the only survivor. Her parents died in the crash, so she went to live with an aunt and uncle in Alabama. No idea why he mentioned that Henry Ford II died in Michigan?

But hey, music lives on, right? LOL :rocker:

she sent a text to a friend on Sunday and didn't report to work on Monday
(narrows down the timeline)

http://detroit.cbslocal.com/2012/12/13/emu-students-death-investigated-as-apparent-homicide/

Wasn't there another student who said she saw Julia at class on Monday? If class was in the AM and she was scheduled to work that afternoon or evening- that might narrow down the timeline even more. As it stands, it looks like this happened Sunday night going into Monday sometime.
