I think diciplinary discussions should have been handled by the birth mother, not the step father. But that's my personal opinion. Most especially if this man has impulse control issues. Up thread there was discussion of him using a wooden spoon (?) on the girls. Absolutely out of line, and even more so because he is a step father.

I absolutely agree that JT should not have been the primary disciplinarian to children who were not his own. That Kim allowed the strict discipline of her twin daughters suggests to me that she might have been afraid of her husband. Rather than incur JT's wrath, Kim appears to have allowed JT full reign over Jennifer and Julia. I hope JT hasn't similarly disciplined his youngest daughter, but I suspect the 12-year-old is no stranger to JT's controlling behavior. :moo:

What makes you think there is Turnquist "money"? This family doesn't appear to be especially well-off from what I've seen. Didn't Trojan1966 post that the house the family lives in is approx. 900 sq.ft. with only two bedrooms (for a family of five at one time)? Jennifer and Julia lived at home while attending community college for at least two years before living away from home at EMU. It appears to me that both girls had part-time jobs early on and worked while they were full-time students. The young women deserved some down time, IMO, because both were motivated, goal-oriented, hard-working. I don't know for a fact, and perhaps Trojan1966 will let us know, but I'll assume that Jennifer and Julia paid at least part of their college tuition/room/board and/or applied for scholarships, grants, or student loans. It's my understanding that Kim has always worked, too. Turnquist money?

You are exactly right. Kim has worked for years at Meijers (similar to WalMart) and the twins started working early in their lives at Meijers too. There is no Turnquist money. Jim has not had a good steady job in many years. He does his "cleaning business" and that's about it. At times, he does not have a steady income, so the family relies on Kim to be the main bread winner. Both girls obtained scholarships, grants and student loans to attend EMU. Julie paid her own rent for the apartment but the parents contributed by buy some furniture for her room and kitchen items and linens for them. All in all, they both were hard workers and were winning to put for the effort to better themselves by obtaining an education. I did cosign for a student loan for Jennifer but she has been making all the payments. I was very proud of the effort both girls put forth for their education.

Having the largest bust in Monroe, Turnquist living there as well obviously raised a red flag. When did LE officially rule him out to these connections? Or is this speculation?

Right now from what I've heard this was just a coincidence, The other guy had such a large "collection" that he must have been doing this for many, many years.

I've lived in Michigan all my life and am very familiar with Meijer. DH has gone there as I type to pick up a few necessities. :D We don't do WalMart.

Has this been discussed here before? I just came across this basketball player who was accused of strangling
his GF at peninsular place.

Great, and he is majoring in criminal justice! Good grief!
He should be questioned, and his whereabouts the night of Julia's murder should be checked as well. Good article, and all of these leads should be examined. Great work black_squirrel!
BTW, that picture doesn't help either.....

I have no reason to know, BDE, sorry, wild guessing at what could Julia have known about that would motivate Turnquist to do this? Control seems to be run theme of their relationship, and he, potentially, an impulsive man with boundary issues, it may have been a combination, but it seems planned, not per chance, to me. Thank you for all the information in your post too. It's good to see it context.

Agree that it appears premeditated/laying in wait.

Yes. No notice, from behind. Maybe right there where she was standing in the bathroom. Though the room may have been messy there was no evidence of a struggle, left almost with reverence, IIRC, from reading the description when I first joined Chelsea's thread, were my impressions. As BDE, points out so well, Julia was a hard working girl just starting to spread her wings and set her sights. She was cramming for exams, that weekend, it seems to me, not sneaking around with a casual friend nobody seems to know, and LE has gone through all her friends and young men seen in the area, from what I've read through. She also seem extremely sensible, having navigated the life she seems to have had.

Thank you, Spellie. Doesn't sound related, to me, what came of it? Athletes getting violent with college girls around a campus sounds more common than it should be, as is the lack of follow through, though I can understand why. Is there any more information on it?

I haven't followed that one, so I don't know if any more has come. The victim didn't show up at court, could not be located in time, so the case was dropped. It was possible it could be reinstated at "some time in the future", but I have not heard about it.

Just a quick note to wish all of my Websleuths family who observe, a "chag Pesach sameach" or Happy Easter, or both!
Sending special warm wishes to Trojan1966.

Love to all,
Roses

Just checked the EMU basket ball schedule from 2012/3. They played on Dec 8 and next on Dec 15 so he was not playing a game or traveling when Julia was murdered. Also found another EMU coed that was murdered 15 years ago, Renée Welka.

Any details of the circumstances?
