46-year-old pleads no contest to torture death at Saginaw Township motel

Daniel Varnes pleaded no contest to torture and murder charges for the death of Teressa Johnson at the Rodeway Inn in Saginaw Township in the fall of 2024.

Court records show 46-year-old Daniel Varnes pleaded no contest to three charges, including second-degree murder and torture, in connection with the death of Teressa Johnson.

A drug dealer reported one of his customers to the police after he went to his motel room and learned that he murdered his girlfriend and had been living with her corpse for days.

According to courtroom reporting from MLive, 47-year-old Daniel Varnes met a drug dealer at a gas station near the motel he was renting a room at on September 1, 2024. Varnes agreed to pay the dealer $60 for crack, but instead he stole the drugs and ran away without paying.

The dealer called Varnes after he stole the narcotics, and Varnes told the man to come to his motel room. The dealer complied and entered Varnes' room to find a lump on the bed covered by a blanket that was in the shape of a human body. Varnes explained that he had a "situation going on," pointing to the bed, at which point the dealer asked what was beneath the blanket.

"You know exactly what it is," Varnes told the dealer as he removed the blanket.

He confessed to beating the victim with various weapons, using pliers on her mouth to "shut her up," and repeatedly abusing her.

Authorities discovered multiple weapons with the victim's blood on them in Varnes' motel room, including scissors, a ratchet, side cutters, screwdrivers, and pliers.

Varnes was on the Michigan Sex Offender Registry for a past conviction in Genesee County.

The prosecutor's office is waiting for autopsy results and may eventually charge Varnes with open murder.

Along with the torture charge, he faces assault with intent less than murder and concealing the death of an individual.

Varnes admitted to beating Johnson over a two-week period using both his fists and boots, and said he used needle-nosed pliers to keep her lips shut, per MLive. He also allegedly stated that he had last seen Johnson alive at around 2:30 p.m. on Aug. 31, and was afraid to tell authorities about her death after he realized she had died.

Varnes additionally described Johnson as legally blind and mentally incapacitated, per the outlet.

Investigators found a pair of small scissors, a tire plug, a ratchet, a diagonal cutter, screwdrivers and pliers that all tested positive for blood that likely came from Johnson, per police, according to MLive.
