"A Michigan mother has been arrested for allegedly murdering her two-year-old daughter
after claiming for years that the child was sick with a rare virus,
when in reality she was repeatedly suffocating the baby with a bag,
police said.

Irene Whitehead, 27,
was arrested by the Kent County Sheriff's Office on November 12
and charged with first-degree murder of her daughter, Ryleigh Whitehead,
according to county jail records.

Ryleigh died on September 3.

That day,
police responded to a 911 call at Whitehead's home in Cedar Springs,
where they found the child unresponsive and not breathing.

Investigators now believe
that Ryleigh's many trips in and out of the hospital during her short lifetime
were due to the mother repeatedly suffocating her."
