(WXYZ) - The trial for former Inkster police officer William Melendez will resume Thursday. Melendez was charged in the beating of Floyd Dent.

It's a story that gained national attention after the video of the beating went viral.

Opening statements will begin this morning in the case against William Melendez. The 47-year-old was captured on video repeatedly punching Dent in the head during a traffic stop back in January.

Melendez has been charged with assault and was fired by the Inkster Police Department.

William Melendez, who was fired from the Inkster Police Department in April following the Jan. 28 incident, was found guilty of misconduct in office and assault with intent to do great bodily harm.

On a separate count of strangulation, he was found not guilty...

He faces up to 10 years in prison.
