Young found guilty of murder in Cipriano beating case

Michael Martindale /The Detroit News

Mitchell Young in court on June 27. (Clarence Tabb, Jr./The Detroit News)
Pontiac — After less than two hours of deliberation, an Oakland Circuit Court jury found a 21-year-old man guilty in a fatal 2012 baseball bat attack on a Farmington Hills family in which the father was beaten to death and two other family members were severely injured.

Mitchell Young, 21, pleaded not guilty to charges of first-degree, premeditated murder; first-degree felony murder; assault with intent to murder; and armed robbery in the incident in which Robert Cipriano, 52, was beaten to death with an aluminum baseball bat. His wife Rose, 51, and a son, Salvatore, 17, were seriously injured. Salvatore, who suffered multiple skull fractures, remains under care for brain and head injuries. Salvatore’s twin brother, Tanner, hid during the attack and called police. An 8-year-old sister, Isabella, was at home but not physically injured during the attack.

Young, who showed no emotion when the verdicts were read, will be sentenced to life in prison on July 25...

Bette - I have my Granddaughters & could only skim -- was anyone else there for Young besides his grandmother & former girlfriend? Just curious. I'm happy these 2 punks will never see freedom again. What a travesty...2 young good-looking guys w/the world before them....I just feel so horrible for Rose Cipriano & their whole family, as well as Young's family. Maybe some healing can begin, but it's gonna take a looong time to recover, if they ever do...

Now that trial is over and a verdict reached, may I just say that I am so sorry for everyone involved in this case, both the victims and the perpetrators.

Usually I do not have much sympathy for those who kill others, but these two were so young and had so much living to do. When they attacked the Cipriano family and killed RC, they killed themselves also. Their lives will be totally miserable for all the years to come.

May the two families continue to heal ( hopes for SC's recovery) and somehow find strength and peace now that the trial is over.:rose: A terribly sad case, all the way around and what a waste.

Thank you kindly to everyone for the updates on this case. TigerBalm, your comments and photos made all the difference for those of us trying to keep updated from work.

I know that Mitchell's grandmother was in court today and had been there daily to support the young man. I read that the girlfriend was there sometimes but there was no mention of her being in court today.

Justice has been served in this sad case with both perps set to spend the rest of their earthly lives in prison, but the emotional and physical damage to this family will linger for a very long time. Similarly to the case of Patrick Mikes, Sr. of Troy, MI who was allegedly beaten to death by his son, Patrick, Jr., it is truly sad that these privileged youngsters can turn into vicious killers. These are young people who live in affluent communities, attend the finest schools, and have unbridled potential and opportunities to make something of themselves. I don't know how or why things go so wrong, but they do. I guess that there are some things that we will never understand. My thoughts and prayers are with the families of the two young men who perpetrated this senseless crime.

Cipriano had a good, if troubled, upbringing. Young, not so much. He was raised in a home of alcohol and domestic violence. No excuse! He did the crime (imo) and must take his punishment along with Cipriano. But, at the end of this trial, all I can see is pain, misery, and sorrow on all sides. And the waste ...the horrendous waste of life. :(

Echo every word. May healing touch everyone.

I was totally surprised by my reaction to these two. Usually I feel satisfaction that justice has been served and reserve my sympathy for the victims.

Justice WAS served for both these young men. I have so much sympathy for the Cipriano family. They will never be whole again.

But I still feel for these two young men and hope that they, too, can find some kind of peace and purpose even in prison. :(

Cipriano, Young face sentencing today in brutal murder case

Oralandar Brand-Williams and Mike Martindale/The Detroit News

Pontiac— In April 2012, Tucker Cipriano and Mitchell Young were both living on the street, kicked out of their suburban homes by parents who had enough of their behavior.

After sentencing Wednesday, both will have addresses for the rest of their lives — in prison without chance of parole.

Cipriano, 20, pleaded no contest to felony murder in the April 16, 2012, baseball bat slaying of his father, Robert Cipriano, 52, in a brutal attack in which the victim's wife, Rosemary, and another son, Salvatore, 17, were also repeatedly beaten. After months of treatment, Rosemary, 51, is now managing her own affairs again but Salvatore continues to receive constant care for multiple skull fractures and brain injury.

Young, 21, who blubbered after arrest on how he was innocent of any assault, was ultimately convicted of the same slaying and five related crimes...
