MI - Samantha Woll, a Detroit synagogue president, fatally stabbed *Arrest*

  • #121
The arrest announcement said the suspect knew her well & attended the same synagogue... maybe he is a community leader like she was, & they're trying to create privacy for the community to deal with the shock & upset ?
JMO
No, I don't think LE is that tender to withhold name so people can deal with the shock. It's their job to bring criminals to justice, not provide time for families to be comforted - sorry to be harsh.

“Detroit Police were reviewing on Friday an ambiguous statement by a jailed suspect in the fatal stabbing of downtown Detroit synagogue President Samantha Woll, the Detroit News reports, citing four unnamed police sources.

. . . The suspect, whose name has not officially been released, was arrested Tuesday in Kalamazoo after he gave a statement about the killing, but officials felt it wasn't enough to file charges, the News reports.”
Okay, things are kinda sorta starting to make sense.

Someone made a statement that got to the ears of LE? But what statement? Perhaps, " I dropped her off at home that night but everything seemed fine" ????

I'm half expecting the next news will be the suspect was released without charges.

JMO I've just parsed through this very sad thread - I strongly suspect the suspect arrested Tuesday targeted Samantha for personal reasons. I have suspicions that it may have been DV (I do wonder if the two had a relationship, or had begun casually dating, for example), or a stalking incident. This is all MOO and speculation. I pray Samantha gets justice in this horrible murder.

JMO I can definitely see this scenario, especially if Samantha had had a relationship with that person, or at least been comfortable enough to let her guard down around them, and they attacked her in the home, then ran away and said they'd last seen her when dropping her off.

I've been wondering if the killer is some type of stalker that had been harassing her. I'm sure if she had a stalker she would have shared that with close friends & family and they may have told LE.

Soooo... Now the suspect has been released and we are back to the beginning?

Dang it! This woman (and every murder victim) deserves justice!

Seems like LE thinks it was someone who was in her life. Why would the person be carrying a a knife unless they planned to use it? Possibly premeditated? JMO.

Or, something escalated fast. Is the kitchen near the front door, do we know?

Sadly reminds me of the Dr. Devon Hoover case-- they arrested a "suspect" and then turned that person loose----with no charges-- makes you wonder--------(both are Detroit cases)

Orsolya Gaal case comes to mind.
Good example. Perhaps Samantha asked someone to leave at the door, but the person expected to be able to stay and was outraged at rejection.

It's hard to be patient when it seems like LE has a rather clear direction.

I didn't know until reading here just now that the suspect had been released without charges. I watched local news at 4:00, 5:00, and 6:00, and there was no mention of the case. I shut down my computer for the rest of the night. I'm very disappointed that the suspect was released - similarly to the Hoover case - and that DPD seems to be back to square one.

"Suspect arrested in murder of Jewish synagogue leader Samantha Woll is RELEASED without charge after police raided his home.

A suspect in the killing of Detroit synagogue leader Samantha Woll has been released without charge after being arrested earlier this week.

The unnamed suspect, who was reportedly close with Woll and attended her funeral, was released Friday after being arrested in Kalamazoo on Tuesday.

Despite investigators zeroing in on the alleged killer, Michigan law's three-day limit means suspects must be released no more than three days after an arrest if charges are not brought."

Does anyone think there's a reason that LE has stated that the suspect knew her well, attended the same synagogue and attended her funeral? It seems like they didn't have to release that information. Now, of course, I'm sure that everyone is looking at each other with suspicion. Was that their intent, perhaps, to get people talking? (As if they weren't already...)

Not harsh at all & no apologies to me - I agree! Just was trying to speculate on why things don't seem to be moving along as they should... but I admit I do like the idea of "trying to shelter a hurting community" more than "dropped the ball & can't get the job done" .... hopefully that's not where we're headed!! JMO

Everything LE has said publicly (& hasn't said) has sounded IMO like they're looking at a DV angle- in addition to "no hate crime, terrorism," there's no comment/info on her relationship status or a significant other mourning her; she'd attended a wedding & they won't say who she left with; attack began in the home with no forced entry, etc.

But an arrest & release without charges .... wow. Don't know what to think of that. Given all the evidence available to LE these days (doorbell cameras, gps on phones etc), this really makes me wonder if they have any idea.... arrrrrgggghhhh
IMO

"Deadline Detroit reported Thursday that the suspect knew Woll well and attended the same synagogue, the Isaac Agree Downtown Synagogue on Griswold. The suspect attended her funeral on Oct. 22, according to one person who interacted with him there. He was also present at the August celebration for the reopening of the building following a $6 million renovation, and posed for photos with Woll."

Sheesh. They may as well just release his name already!! What will we read next - "He was standing on her left side in the photo."

That is my reaction too! Doing everything now but spelling the name.

My hunch is LE is a bit pissed that they weren't able to actually charge (at this time) and are putting on stronger pressure.

It is kind of puzzling that the same thing occurred with the Dr. Hoover case, although they gave no information about that suspect that they released, whereas with the suspect in the Woll case, they gave out lots of information about the suspect but their name LOL
