CENTREVILLE — Defense and prosecution attorneys may now know whether a St. Joseph County jury will hear what Venus Stewart allegedly told relatives about her estranged husband before she disappeared last April.

But the public presumably won't know until the trial begins in February, after St. Joseph County Circuit Judge Paul Stutesman moved his decision on a defense hearsay challenge behind closed doors again late Friday afternoon and sealed his written order.

Centreville, Mich. —

Douglas Stewart made a brief appearance in a St. Joseph County courtroom Friday.
Most of Stewart’s time before St. Joseph County Circuit Judge Paul Stutesman was spent behind closed doors with his attorneys, Jeffrey and Kimberly Schroder, and St. Joseph County Prosecutor John McDonough.
The Schroders also presented an ex parte (emergency) communication to Stutesman that was discussed privately without further explanation in the open courtroom.

I just discovered this case and had a question... does anyone know anything about Ricky Spencer from Delaware?? I saw the picture and read the reports.. but truth is I think I know his parents and if he is the boy I think he is.. this can't be more of a shock! His parents are just wonderful people and he grew up in a wonderful environment. I am praying I have the wrong person... so I was curious if anyone had any other information on him...

I don't know anything other than what has been reported. He apparently met DS through online gaming like xbox live or something and talked to him A LOT. From what I understand he knew the whole plot. He knew DS was going to kill Venus and did NOTHING.
I personally think he should be in a cell next to Doug but IMO he struck a big deal for the info he has.

I agree .. if he did what is seems like he did... he should pay the price for it. I just think it's a tragedy if he's the son of the people I know.. I hope he isn't.

Thinking of Venus on this cold evening. Still thinking of Venus and her family.
Praying she is found soon.

Also praying for the trial that is set to start in a couple of weeks. I feel for her family who will have to sit through the trial and look at DS's face knowing what he did to their daughter. I hope and pray the girls are getting the help they need. Such sweet baby girls. How horrible to have to live through this.

Such a sad sad case.

Jury election to start Friday

Stewart is scheduled to face trial in the courtroom of Circuit Judge Paul Stutesman.
The number of potential jurors being called was not public information Monday, according to court personnel.

Last fall, before Stewart’s trial was postponed because of motions filed by his attorneys, a jury would have been selected from a pool of 287 potential jurors.
Court officials are being cautious about what they say to the media. A Circuit Court employee said several panels of potential jurors will be called. The first group will meet at 8:30 a.m. Friday.

There will be no jury selection next Monday, because the Courthouse is closed for Presidents Day. Jury selection is expected to resume Tuesday and Wednesday.

It was learned that a news crew from “In Session,” a court TV program, will meet in Stutesman’s courtroom on Presidents Day to review trial plans.

Stewart is represented by Jeffrey and Kimberly Schroder.

I have a feeling that even when Doug is convicted he'll never tell about what he did to Venus and where he put her. It's the last bit of control he can ever maintain over her.

Circuit Judge Paul Stutesman told members of the jury pool Friday that testimony in the case is expected to last three to four weeks.

Oh, I hope Venus receives the justice she deserves. Maybe when it's all over, he'll tell where he put her body.
