Judge in Venus Stewart case seals ruling on hearsay evidence

CENTREVILLE Defense and prosecution attorneys may now know whether a St. Joseph County jury will hear what Venus Stewart allegedly told relatives about her estranged husband before she disappeared last April.
But the public presumably won't know until the trial begins in February, after St. Joseph County Circuit Judge Paul Stutesman moved his decision on a defense hearsay challenge behind closed doors again late Friday afternoon and sealed his written order.

Douglas Stewart made a brief appearance in a St. Joseph County courtroom Friday.
Most of Stewarts time before St. Joseph County Circuit Judge Paul Stutesman was spent behind closed doors with his attorneys, Jeffrey and Kimberly Schroder, and St. Joseph County Prosecutor John McDonough.
The Schroders also presented an ex parte (emergency) communication to Stutesman that was discussed privately without further explanation in the open courtroom.
