I think it would be sufficient to have the tarp (wrapper) match up with what's on the WalMart receipt to tie the purchases into Venus' abduction. And whoever purchased those items would be on store surveillance. :) MOO

If the surveillance tapes were kept, right. The truck was found some time on 4/28-the receipts were found in the truck after that....so were the tapes still available.

If DS set this up, he better slap the daylights out of the brilliant co-hort who dropped the tarp wrapper and left the receipt in the truck ;)

Well, they were estranged and living apart. So this isn't like a loving husband and family man suddenly clamming up.

He could find his statements taken out of context, twisted and, as they say in the miranda rights, "used against him in a court of law".

His lawyer would be negligent to allow Doug to say anything to the police, even if Doug is innocent. Too much of a circumstantial situation that you don't want to open your mouth and say something the wrong way and have it used against you later.

This does not work for me, TBH. The estranged husband should be the first to cooperate because he knows he will be looked at hard.

Maybe someone can come up with the clip from NG where she says it. I thought too that she said the blood belonged to DS.

IIRC it was a news article, not NG. An advance search on my name as username and blood as the keyword should bring it up fairly readily.

It's not completely meaningless, because it leaves the door open that someone else would have a very good reason to be in possession of keys to this truck. Plus he was not in the vehicle when it was located, it was found a few blocks from his apartment building. We don't know the circumstances behind how it arrived at that location or who's possession it was in prior to it arriving there. If my spouse and i own a bicycle and we both ride it from time to time and someone takes it from my garage and it's found 2 blocks away at a park, am I in possession of it?

I think we are all reaching here. The truck was not with Venus-if there is a trial possession of the vehicle might be raised I suppose-If I park my car down the street from my house and walk home am I in possession of it? :innocent:

The truck would not have to be with Venus, someone other than DS would just need to have the keys to gain possession of it temporarily. Or even to just stash a few obvious clues inside it and put it back on the street near DS apartment.

I'm losing my mind. You're absolutely right, of course. I'm too sleepy to be posting. I apologize.

Heh :)

It's easy to get things muddled up, I'm allways reading some newsclip, sort of remembering it but then for the life of me I can't find it again ;)

By reading the posts on this page, it seems that nothing new was found during the volunteered search yesterday?

The longer things stay stale, the more we all may start changing our ways of thinking here.

Is that the working theory here? Who took possession of the truck and set DS up? Venus? So this was just an incredibly convoluted attempt to get back at DS? What is the endgame of staging her own abduction, I wonder....how is she going to get back to her beloved children that she cared enough about to take with her when she ran :waitasec:

Seems like a whole lot of work to me without a guaranteed result.

Things should heat up when the forensics start coming back I expect....

The whole theory against DS is based on a whole lot of work without a guaranteed result...otherwise he committed this nearly perfect crime right up til he got back to the VA line and turned into Forrest Gump.

Her mom could have known that it was Doug's blood because back in the old days, before DNA, they did type blood. If Doug and Venus had different blood types, they could have made that determination quickly. Why would her mom lie? My question is if it is Venus's blood in the Mercury, how on earth did it get there? I mean if it's fresh, if it's old, it could have been from a bloody nose, cut foot, etc.

ETA They can date it, here is a great article.

Near perfect crime? Based on what?

  • Tire treads "generally" matching the Ram found near the abduction site.
  • Dropped a tarp wrapper at the scene of the abduction.
  • Matching vehicle seen in field with man crouching behind it.
  • Stopped at WALMART (cams galore) to buy murder kit (including a tarp, the wrapper of which he left at crime scene) on the way to MI.
  • Could not be located until "late night" on the day of the crime

The only things Doug Stewart has going FOR him are:

  • No one saw Venus being abducted
  • An alibi that is being rechecked by MSP

You may consider this a perfect crime, but I think he Gumped up most of it. He's just stone lucky that no one saw him take Venus.

List of DS things to do if accomplice did this:

Set up 2 credible alibis placing him in Virginia
Call his kids at 8pm the night before (probably verified to be from VA)
Give accomplice keys and truck and major wad of cash to pay for expenses
Give 2nd accomplice keys and car and major wad of cash to pay for expenses.
Have accomplices drive to Michigan on 25th and stop in OH at Walmart for "murder kit" where it's obvious there are dozens of cameras watching.
Have accomplice in car drive by old house in Schoolcraft several times, "enough to be crusing the neighborhood and recognized by neighbors".
Have accomplice park in a field directly accross the street from VS house at just at the right time to be seen by a neighbor.
Have accomplice do so at around the exact time that VS comes out by herself to mail a letter.
Have accomplice execute the adbuction in broad daylight with no witnesses seeing or hearing anything and by not leaving any blood, hair, clothing or anything else at the scene except the tarp wrapper lying in the yard found by LM.
Have accomplice get VS into the truck though she is incapacitated and without being seen.
Have accomplice put VS somewhere, get rid of murder kit and get two vehicles back to VA successfully even though there is a BOLO for and LE is looking for both of these vehicles everywhere between MI and VA.
Have accomplices wait two days and leave vehicles a few blocks away from DS apartment.

That seems like a lot of work...with no guarantee. And that's if he stayed home.

It gets even more unrealistic if DS is one of the drivers of the vehicles. Because he could not be in Ohio buying tarps on the 25th and be in VA calling his children at 8pm on the 25th. Plus, he's home in VA later that evening on the day she is abducted, and he and his accomplice would have had to hide both vehicles somewhere in VA where they would not be found and then put them out on the street a few block from his apartment without being seen by anyone a few days later.

I know this is totally off topic, but can someone give me the link to the Haleigh Cummings case...I can't find it.

This is a case I've followed since the beginning and I will tell you that it is an investigator's nightmare.
