The second half of legal proceedings against a couple charged in the death of an infant boy is about to get underway with the mother of the child preparing to stand trial.

A jury trial for Lisa Reed, of Ecorse, is scheduled to take place on March 11 in the death of 1-year-old Zyaire Reed.

Zyaire had a twin brother, Zion, who police said also had been abused, but he survived.

Reed is charged with second-degree murder and child abuse. The mother had a live-in boyfriend, James Edward Gibson, who faced charges in the case.

Gibson pleaded guilty to second-degree murder and first-degree child abuse. He was sentenced on Jan. 20, 2023, to 33 to 60 years in prison.

People were so angered after learning what the children endured, there were numerous offers to foster and adopt Zion, including his own daughter.

Police said he was placed with a family outside of the Downriver area and the last time police checked on him he was getting the care needed and improving.
