Michael "Kramer" Richards - a racist?

So the guy heckled him, big deal thats part of being a comedian. That gives you the right to yell racial slur's? Sorry nan I have to disagree that the guy should bear some responsibility for this.

I just discovered that someone I work with knows Richards well and spoke to him today. She says the heckler was not just heckling Richards, but yelling anti-semitic slurs at him for some time before Richards responded in kind.

Even if true, this doesn't necessarily justify what Richards said, but it does make more sense. He was responding with racial epithets to say, in essence, "See? How do you like it?"

As we might tell a 5-year-old, "Two wrongs don't make a right." But I can at least understand now how this happened. (I was beginning to think Richards had had some sort of stroke on stage.)

I watched the Today show, I think that is the one with Matt Lauer and Meredith Vera (sp?) Well she said today that people are more forgiving of Mel then they will be Of Michael Richards. I dont know, Its both unacceptable.

Yes, that would make more sense. And you are right, 2 wrongs dont make a right. But if he was being called racial slur's I could understand more of him yelling them back. Who knows what really happened. I could not hear the man what he was saying to Michael Richards.

I haven't watched the clip, but I was told the anti-semitic slurs went on for some time before the clip begins.

I watched part of it then turned it off. I did not want my little one to hear, and quite frankly I had heard enough. I did hear people in the audience and their reactions were complete shock.

Paladin--lol--what are you talking about? your post makes zero sense--it is also offensive and I will ask the moderators here to delete it
Please don't. I like to know who "they" are.

His comments were racist, but that doesn't necessarily make him a racist. Do you really think, or even know, that Michael Richards despises black people? Just because you speak some hateful words doesn't necessarily mean you believe in them.

EDIT: Not everything is black and white, cut and dry in this world. There are different variables of an equation to consider.
HE's A RACISTand it is very obvious to anyone that has atleast the intelligence of a sock.

Did you read my post on the previous page? My info is second-hand, so you certainly don't have to accept it.

But it does provide at least one other, plausible explanation. Plausible not because there are no racists in the world, but because most of them have learned to be more discrete than Richards' actions would indicate.

The discrete ones are the really scary ones.

I have more respect for the racists that yell racial slurs in public. At least they have the balls to be honest with themselves and the world. Richard & Gibson .........scary

Did they use the word around black people? I think your parents were well aware that the word was wrong and hateful. I'm sorry, but whether or not it was commonly used during a certain time period doesn't make it right or any less hateful.
or any less racist!

I grew up in a really rural area of Alabama. My papaw was a minister of a small church and all of my family were sharecroppers. We all lived on the land and took care of Mr. D's animals and chicken houses in exchange for rent etc.

Every summer a man we knew as N* John came to help us with harvesting. That's how he introduced himself, everyone called him that, that's what is on his tombstone even. I had no clue until I was much older about what that word meant. I seriously just thought it was his name! He was a really old guy, prolly older than my papaw. He brought his grandsons with him for us to play with and we looked forward to seeing them every year. Living in Podunk has it's draw backs, not many neighbors. But that was the only time it ever crossed my lips. Everyone else was Mr. Seth or Miss Maisy. Or if we happened to be holding a revival, Bro. Seth or Sister Maisy.

Thought I'd clarify something real quick. I was once asked how could I not know? We had no tv until 1984, we listened to gospel radio or records, went to Church and hung out with family. When I say rural, I mean no neighbors for 6 miles and cows are the only thing you saw. School was never a big deal. We went to school in little buildings and my graduating class had 33 people lol

So, it's not always where you grew up. Not everyone has to tack on the south as a reason for ever saying it. I think it's exposure to different cultures and different locals that either makes you immune to saying it or where you just don't hear it. I cringe when I hear anyone, black or white say it. It's just a crude word.

We had our first run in with any kind of discrimination based on skin color the other week and I found myself kinda stumped as to how to handle this one. We are not white but my youngest son is very pale with light eyes and a new neighbor called him a cracker. I told him what I thought it was and he said he didn't care, that crackers tasted good lol He's eight and I guess it's nice that we've lived in such a huge multicultural circle of friends and this is the first time anything like that had happened. Not that I think that is anywhere near the kind of racism that blacks have faced, but it was disturbing just the same.

I did teach him to ignore it, forgive it and to pray that little boy finds inner strength to not hate anyone or to try to hurt others via words. Again, yes, we are those tree huggers you hear about :-)

I have no idea where I'm headed with this. I'm so far out of my zone with this subject. I guess I just felt the need to ramble.

Linda, I was told by someone who spoke with Richards that his racist remarks were made in parody of racist heckling directed at him. We don't have to approve of Richards' choice of response to understand that maybe he's guilty of lousy judgment rather than true racism.

Not all. It's precisely the great details that come from well withIN your zone that make your post interesting. (I hope you noted above that I also said the word "🤬🤬🤬🤬🤬🤬" was not "OK" in the part of the South where I grew up.)

It is wrong for whatever the reason for him yelling. Nova, your second hand info just really explain's how it may have started, if it's true. If it is, they are both obviously racist.

He's not, he just played one on tv. Really! His character was based on a Jewish neighbor of one of the creators.

Richards is 33-degree Scottish Rite Freemason. He is also a Life Member of the Los Angeles Scottish Rite Valley and a Life Member of the Scottish Rite Research Society
