Michigan - Coronavirus COVID-19

I thought that this was interesting and gives an opportunity we might not normally have. Michigan is allowing the public to watch all most of their court cases virtually

Here's how to watch Michigan court hearings online during coronavirus shutdown

"The Virtual Courtroom Directory, unveiled Monday by the Michigan Supreme Court, offers a simple way to find virtual hearings, conducted on Zoom in courtrooms throughout the state. Users can search courts, sort by judge or hearing officer, click on a county to view if a specific court is offering streaming ability and view courts’ public calendars."

I am torn on what is going on in MI. Not a critique of the governor as she is between a rock and a hard place. But so am I! I live in SE MI. I can go a couple hours north and hit up the bars, restaurants..following social distance rules set forth. I can do the same by driving 45 minutes south to OH. My area was hit hard, thus the decision to hold off. But I just wonder if it is just putting the bars and restaurants here in a disadvantage. I mean I know it is! And speaking specifically about the counties Up North, are they safe with what will be an exodus north? Typically in MI the wagon train north on any given Friday afternoon is huge. Up North is like our "Jersey Shore"...we flock there and think nothing of the drive. Given the nature of Michiganders to 'mingle' about the state, maybe it should all be open so as to not encourage those here to flock north to the lesser infected areas. Who have less medical resources.......

<respectfully snipped>

I agree with your assessment of the situation, and I was actually very surprised to learn that the Governor extended the "stay-at-home" order for another two weeks. There are more businesses opening next week, and many people will have more opportunity to be out and about due to medical facilities and some retail shops being open, but I think it's time to move forward from the lockdown. I have already scheduled physical therapy appointments for next week to resume treatment for bursitis in my right hip. I had my initial intake evaluation in March followed by four therapy sessions before the Coronavirus shutdown.

I called the Beaumont outpatient facility last week and found out that they are scheduling limited appointments, and I was happy to get a Tues/Thurs 11:00am time slot with the female therapist who did my intake evaluation. There will only be two therapists working for now, so that means four people in the spacious gym at the same time. Everyone has to wear a mask, health questionnaire and temp taken upon arrival. There was plenty of hand sanitizer and disinfectant wipes even before Covid, so that won't be an issue. I also rescheduled my ophthalmologist appointment that was canceled in early April and my mammogram that was canceled twice in two months due to the Governor's stay-at-home order. When the imaging center canceled the second appointment, I said that I would wait to reschedule until I was sure that we could venture out and about. When I called last week, they were already booked into early July. I plan to keep all of these appointments as the constant rescheduling is ridiculous!

DH and I are itching for haircuts, manicures, and pedicures, but it looks like those services will be on hold for at least another two weeks, if not longer. We'd like to enjoy dinner out for our June 25th anniversary, but who knows if metro-Detroit restaurants will be open by then? I feel that Michiganders, by and large, have done an exemplary job of playing by the rules as evidenced by our national ranking in meeting the CDC's timeline for reopening. It's time for us to be released from captivity.

BDE, you summed up my thoughts exactly.
I work in the medical field. We are making outpatient visits as safe as possible and I would feel comfortable using any of our services. Putting off treatment for some will actually be more dangerous than the risk of Covid, in my opinion. Good luck on all of your appointments. I work for UM and we are really working hard to take care of those that need services safely.
I hope by your anniversary you are able to share a nice dinner out with your DH. We are also hoping for being able to at least enjoy some outdoor dining and a cocktails at our favorite restaurant or breweries soon. Mr Pirate is a bit older at 72 so we will be taking advantage of the great outdoor patios that many restaurants have. Indoors, might be a while for us but I think it’s a personal choice and it’s time to give the people a choice. I too was surprised she extended the order. It didn’t compute with gather in groups of less than 10 but stay home? Anyways, MI got hit hard and we are doing well. I am just so ready to see my beloved community get economically healthy again.

Problems line up outside Detroit area’s closed malls amid coronavirus pandemic

The shopping experience at Metro Detroit malls will be much different after the coronavirus pandemic eases and doors begin reopening.

Retail experts say expect shorter hours and smaller crowds of wary shoppers, with stores offering to deliver merchandise curbside.

And there's a good chance the landscape will have changed: Some department store anchors and other retailers are expected to go dark. Malls that were in trouble before they were forced to lock their doors in mid-March now find themselves in even worse financial straits...

Here’s a list of 27 types of businesses that are still closed in Michigan

Indoor exercise facilities, personal care salons among businesses still shuttered

LANSING, Mich. – When Michigan Gov. Gretchen Whitmer lifted the stay-at-home order for the entire state on Monday, she also provided a list of businesses that are still closed.

“What you’ll see (in the executive order) is a list (of businesses that) cannot reopen, and that’s precisely what we’re trying to do here,” Whitmer said. “Before we have said the mass majority need to stay home except for a handful of exceptions...

“Like me, you need a haircut desperately? A couple more weeks of this and we may be back in a place where we’re able to do that safely,” she said.

. . . “Google how to do a haircut or throw your hair in a ponytail or curl it and get through the next couple of weeks so we can resume some of these things.”

I read about this on WDIV website this morning. Really? Cut your own hair? I doubt my stylist wants me to do this. Silly. That said, I hope we don't have to wait until 4th of July to get haircuts and manicures/pedicures.

Regions six, eight to move to ‘Containing’ phase of reopening plan

LANSING, Mich. – Michigan Gov. Gretchen Whitmer is lifting more restrictions in parts of the state, moving two regions to the fifth phase of her six-part coronavirus (COVID-19) reopening plan, starting next week.

On Friday, Whitmer announced the Upper Peninsula and Traverse City Region will move to the “Containing” phase of her plan, starting Wednesday (June 10). That means the northern part of the state will be just one phase away from the final phase, also known as “Post-pandemic.”

Phase five will reopen salons, movie theaters and gyms, as long as they follow safety protocols designed to minimize the spread of COVID-19...
