Are you ready to eat at restaurants after Michigan’s order lifted?

Two-thirds of our text exchange members say they’re not ready to return to dining rooms; Those who are ready share where they’ve been missing

Two-thirds of our Coronavirus Text Exchange members say it’s too early for them to eat at restaurants, but the 21 percent who are ready to eat out have some tasty suggestions for when we can all feel comfortable COVID-19 is under control.

We ask our text group: “Do you plan to eat a restaurant this week?” In all, 66% said no, 22% said yes, and 12% said they’re not sure.

The majority said it was just too soon. Some said they would wait for a vaccine or full cure to restaurants, while others said they would watch how things go in the next few weeks before making a decision...

DH and I have continued our usual practice of one takeout dinner weekly throughout the pandemic. We would like to enjoy dinner out for our anniversary on June 25, but we have no plans to dine out before that. We feel confident that our favorite restaurant (Picano's in Troy, MI) will do an exemplary job of keeping patrons safe in their spacious facility. The restaurant has several dining rooms with booths and tables that are already comfortably spaced. I'm sure they will make a serious effort to further spread diners out so there is little risk of Covid transmission. Once Picano's has reopened for indoor service, we will monitor their progress on social media, read reviews, etc. Hopefully, they will have the situation under control by June 25, and we can return to our favorite restaurant for a long-awaited visit.

British study: Whitmer stay-home orders saved perhaps tens of thousands of lives

Stay-at-home orders that brought armed protesters to the Michigan Capitol this spring may have saved tens of thousands of lives in the state, according to a British study.

Researchers at Imperial College London and Oxford University tracked the effectiveness of non-pharmaceutical interventions against the novel coronavirus, such as stay-at-home orders, by tracking how mobility decreased after governors declared states of emergency in each state.

They tracked mobility, using Google, because people who spend less time in public spaces are less likely to be exposed to the disease.

The researchers found that states that were more successful at keeping people at home were also more successful at reducing the spread of COVID-19. And mobility decreased more in Michigan under Gov. Gretchen Whitmer's stay-home orders than in any other Great Lakes states — or most states in the United States, according to the study...

Michigan Gov. Gretchen Whitmer to outline next steps for schools to reopen this fall

Whitmer to release Michigan’s Return to School Roadmap on June 30

LANSING, Mich. – Michigan Gov. Gretchen Whitmer announced plans for an outline that will allow schools across the state to reopen for in-person learning this fall.

Whitmer said Michigan schools will be allowed to resume in-person learning within phase four of her reopening plan. The process will include strict safety measures to prevent the spread of the coronavirus (COVID-19).

She will release a “Michigan’s Return to School Roadmap” on June 30 to outline requirements, guidelines and recommendations for schools...

COVID-19 modeling site: Michigan one of two states 'on track to contain' virus

Lansing — A national website that's been monitoring the spread of COVID-19 says Michigan is one of two states "on track to contain" the novel coronavirus.

COVID Act Now, which describes itself as a "team of technologists, epidemiologists, health experts and public policy leaders," tweeted Tuesday that Michigan had moved to its lowest risk category on its warning dashboard for states.

"Cases are steadily decreasing and Michigan’s COVID preparedness meets or exceeds international standards across our key metrics," the site tweeted Tuesday...

Mackinac Island looks to reopen ‘right’ way with season set to truly begin

Mackinac Island — At The Loon Feather gift shop, the shelves have been rearranged to make more space. Plexiglas surrounds the relocated checkout stand. Hand sanitizer, masks, and gloves are accessible to shoppers.

A mask-wearing Mary McCourt Dufina has been ready for customers since she opened the Main Street shop for the season in late May, a month later than usual. So far, the flow of tourists has been more of a trickle than a stream. But with most of the island’s hotels now open and Fort Mackinac and other historic sites following suit this weekend, Dufina is eager for the season to truly begin.

So is Mackinac Island.

The island officially kicks off the summer season Friday, nearly a month after the governor allowed the opening of restaurants, bars and other businesses in the Upper Peninsula and the Traverse City region. Instead of welcoming throngs of tourists Memorial Day weekend, the island remained closed, opting for a slow, measured reopening...

Whitmer extends Michigan's state of emergency through July 16

Lansing — Gov. Gretchen Whitmer extended Michigan's state of emergency Thursday through July 16 as a federal judge asked the state Supreme Court to clarify the governor's emergency powers.

The declaration, which was set to expire Friday, allows the Democratic governor continued authority to issue the executive orders that have created the framework for the state's coronavirus-restricted activity in recent months. Whitmer's response to the pandemic has so far included 122 executive orders.

“The aggressive measures we took at the start of the COVID-19 pandemic have worked to flatten the curve, but there is still more to be done to prevent a second wave,” Whitmer said in a statement...

This isn't going to work. People have already determined that they're done with the stay-at-home order. We're seeing the slacking off daily in our neighborhood where people had been very diligent about masks, social distancing, staying home, etc. since mid-March. Now that bars, restaurants, hair and nail salons, spas, gyms, malls/shops, outdoor entertainment venues, etc. have reopened, it will be difficult to convince folks that they should continue to adhere to executive restrictions.

Federal judge orders Michigan gyms reopened June 25; Whitmer to appeal

A federal judge ruled Friday that Michigan's indoor gyms can reopen on June 25 in spite of Gov. Gretchen Whitmer's executive order keeping them closed.

Grand Rapids U.S. District Judge Paul Maloney granted a preliminary injunction that halted the executive orders requiring the closure of the facilities at the request of the League of Independent Fitness Facilities and Trainers Inc. and a group of 22 companies operating gyms in Michigan.

"Unfortunately, on the record before it, the court has not been presented with any evidence that shows a rational relation between the continued closure of indoor gyms and the preservation of public health," said Maloney, an appointee of former President George W. Bush...

Debate was scheduled for Oct. 15 at Crisler Center

ANN ARBOR, Mich. – The University of Michigan will no longer host one of the three presidential debates planned for this fall ahead of the 2020 General Election.

The Commission on Presidential Debates announced June 23 that the Adrienne Arsht Center for the Performing Arts of Miami-Dade County in Miami, Florida will host the Oct. 15 debate that had been planned for Crisler Center on U-M’s athletics campus.

Whitmer won't cooperate with GOP inquiry on virus in nursing homes

FTA:
Gov. Gretchen Whitmer has declined a request by congressional Republicans to turn over records and brief committee staffers on the state's handling of the novel coronavirus in Michigan's nursing homes.

. . . Whitmer and her health advisers have stressed that no nursing home was forced to take a COVID patient that the facility didn't believe it could safely care for in isolation.

U.S. Appeals Court keeps Michigan gyms closed with emergency stay

Lansing — A three-judge 6th Circuit U.S. Court of Appeals panel intervened Wednesday night to keep indoor gyms in Michigan closed hours before they were scheduled to reopen under a lower court's order.

Agreeing with a request from Gov. Gretchen Whitmer's administration, the panel issued an emergency stay, pausing an injunction from U.S. District Judge Paul Maloney that would have allowed the gyms to open at 12:01 a.m. Thursday.

The stay suspends the reopening as Whitmer continues to appeal the matter...

Appeals court grants Michigan Gov. Whitmer’s motion to keep gyms closed

There are some small, private gyms (not major chains) that reopened in an adjacent county a couple of weeks ago. Local authorities are not shutting them down for violating the Governor's orders. DH's gym/pool was supposed to reopen July 1, but with this latest court order, they most likely won't be able to open as scheduled. The fitness center is run by a major hospital chain, and I doubt they would risk reopening before being given the green light by the Governor.
