Michigan - Coronavirus COVID-19

MDHHS announces next COVID order, revising rules for Michigan restaurants, stadiums, gatherings (clickondetroit.com)

New order scheduled to be in effect Feb. 1 to Feb. 21

...Bars and restaurants have to close by 10 p.m. They must also collect contact information from diners for contact tracing...

I wonder if this will be phone# only or address, too?

Oh, dear. It never ceases to amaze how these measures are so half-baked. I believe Australia has a government app that people have to use to check in everywhere they go, so the contact tracing process is automated and universal. Yet Michigan is going to have a hostess keep track of names of diners in hopes of following up? It's like something out of a satirical movie. In my opinion this only applies to certain businesses in the hopes that the Governor can collect enough data to say "see, I told you so!"

(The Arizona system seems positively enlightened, by comparison. Here, if a place doesn't feel safe, folks are free to go elsewhere.)

Thank you for chiming in on this thread :) Notice that this latest plan is only for three weeks. I can see this changing again after 21 days. There are new strains of the virus appearing everywhere, and I'm sure that this will be taken into consideration if cases increase over the next several weeks. DH received a $200 restaurant gift card for his retirement last month, and we haven't been able to use it. We will make sure to go out to dinner early next month - before there's another hiatus on restaurant dining :D

I fear that the mutations will make this like we are chasing our tails. It seems like there are people who have been essentially homebound for 10 months and are already terrified to venture out - mutations will make it that much harder for them to even trust the vaccine. I work with a doctor and he seems resigned to remaining isolated for another year.

With COVID-19 variant positives, Michigan pauses athletics | Xfinity

ANN ARBOR, Mich. (AP) — The entire University of Michigan athletic department is pausing after several positive tests for the new COVID-19 variant that transmits at a higher rate.

The state Department of Health and Human Services issued the mandate Saturday, with the school saying it follows the positive COVID-19 tests for several individuals linked to the athletic department. The entire department could be in quarantine for two weeks...

Oh, jeez! Is there another "pause" on the horizon? We haven't even gotten to February 1 when some restrictions were going to be lifted. All students are supposed to be back in school for in-person learning by March 1. Biden and Fauci have both indicated that the worst is yet to come

Vaccine shortage slows Michigan’s effort to end pandemic (clickondetroit.com)

LANSING, Mich. – If Michigan could administer 50,000 coronavirus vaccine doses a day, it could hit its goal of inoculating 70% of people age 16 and older by August.

At the current rate, about 29,000 per day, it would not finish until a year from now.

The issue is limited supplies — something Gov. Gretchen Whitmer and health officials hope can be addressed as new President Joe Biden takes the helm amid the largest vaccination effort in U.S. history and as more contagious virus variants spread...

BDE, I just don’t know. This new variant...if the worst is really yet to come, she will probably close things. Again. Sigh.
It is downright frustrating.
I feel like we are just winging it here. MOO.
PS and off topic. Stuck in my head each time I reply to you...”All the boys think she’s a spy “ ;)

Are you seeing cases of restaurants reopening, regardless of closure order? It sounds like about 25% of restaurants in California are continuing to operate.

It's odd here - in the fall there seemed to be a flurry of inspections and a couple of closures reported, but lately it's almost like word got out that inspections are over. Some restaurants don't have enough business to worry, so it's easy to spread people out, but others are tightly packed and over capacity limits.

Michigan GOP plan would halt state decisions on school closures (detroitnews.com)

Lansing — A COVID-19 relief plan introduced by Michigan House Republicans on Wednesday aims to block Gov. Gretchen Whitmer's administration from making future decisions to stop in-person instruction and school sports.

The plan, which was revealed the same day as the Democratic governor's State of the State address, ties $2.1 billion in education funding to the approval of a law that shifts the power to issue orders affecting in-person learning and sports away from the Michigan Department of Health and Human Services, according to a press release.

Instead, local health departments would have the authority to make the decisions. House Appropriations Chairman Thomas Albert, R-Lowell, noted that dozens of school districts haven't had in-person classes since March...

According to Covidactnow.org Oakland County has 17 cases per 100,000-- that is really good, one of the lowest daily cases in the country. However, with these variants already in Michigan, I am considering double masking. What about you?

There are few places that I go these days, but I always have at least three masks with me. Red Wings mask in my jacket pocket, BCBS mask in my purse along with a procedural mask. DH and I both have procedural masks in our cars. I haven't noticed direct orders to double-mask but would do so if necessary.

COVID-19 causes deaths of 9 nuns at Adrian retirement center (detroitnews.com)

An outbreak of COVID-19 has rippled across the campus of Roman Catholic nuns in southeast Michigan, causing the deaths of nine retired nuns.
