Metro Detroit to get hot, hotter, hottest this week

Metro Detroit is likely to experience the hottest stretch of weather so far this year with highs approaching the mid-90s later this week.

The expected high for Monday is 90 degrees, according to the National Weather Service. On Tuesday, temperatures will be relatively cooler with a high of 82.

Things will start to heat up again with a high of 86 on Wednesday and a high of 90 degrees on Thursday.

The high for both Friday and Saturday is expected to be 94. The expected high for Sunday is 89...

Metro Detroiters should don light clothing, seek shade and stock up on water as heat indexes top 100 degrees the next few days, according to the National Weather Service in White Lake Township.

“The high temperature (Thursday) is going to be in the low 90s, but we can expect heat index highs in the upper 90s and lower 100s,” meteorologist Sara Schultz said. “Temperatures tomorrow are going to continue to be in the low to mid 90s with a heat index still in the low 100s.”

In addition to the Heat Advisory, we now have the potential for strong thunderstorms with gusty winds. It's been cloudy and dark for a couple of hours which has helped keep the house cool. With the limited precipitation we've had in my area, I would welcome rain as long as the power doesn't go out.

Too :hot: to smoke a whole cig outside, to :hot: to cook, so treating my daughter and grandaughter to chinese dinner take out. Oh and to :hot: for any housework. It’s an Ozone Action Day with an Air Quality Alert for most of Metro Detroit on this Wednesday. This means the heat, humidity, sun, and lack of wind will create a dangerous heat.

The ozone chemical is created by the sun mixing with pollution and it makes breathing more difficult… especially for those in with health issues. Be careful!!! Highs soaring into the low 90s with a heat index in the mid 90s...

Flood Watch issued for SE Michigan; 1-3 inches of rain expected early Tuesday

DETROIT - A flood watch has been issued for southeastern Michigan beginning at 12 a.m. Tuesday.

The National Weather Service (NWS) said 1-to-3 inches of rain is expected in metro Detroit on Tuesday morning. The heaviest rain is expected between midnight and 6 a.m.

About 2-to-3 inches of rain is expected from the I-69 corridor northward...

Detroit has hottest summer on record; 2nd warmest Aug.

Metro Detroit just wrapped up its hottest summer on record, according to the National Weather Service.

“Even though we didn’t set records for (number of) 90-degree days, it was just consistently warm through the summer months,” said meteorologist Dave Kook said, adding that June, July and August are considered “summer months” for weather service purposes.

An average of 74.9 degrees for those three months narrowly edged out the 74.8 degree record set in 2012, Kook said. The weather service started saving data for Detroit in 1874...

O M G did it rain!!

On a road trip yesterday (appointment that could not be rescheduled) and coming home on I-94 from Eau Claire was brutal! I have never seen such a heavy rain for such an extended period of time. We were on the interstate, sometimes going through construction areas with the orange barrels and redirected lanes, and you could not see beyond the windshield and of course hydroplaning all over the road! We could not pull over to wait it out because you can't stop your vehicle unless it is an emergency--like the vehicle breaks down, or a flat tire. Stopping on the interstate in such low visibility would be just asking for disaster. We were better off to keep moving, but it was really hair-raising, LOL. I do not scare easily but have to say I have never been so happy to park in the lot here at home as I was last night.

857K statewide remain without power after wind storm

Around 1 million Michiganians*lost power in the worst weather event in DTE Energy history and it is expected to be days before power is fully restored throughout the state.

More than 857,000*statewide remained without power early Thursday morning. That's down from the 700,000 DTE customers and 300,000 Consumers Energy Consumers who initially went dark following Wednesday's wind storms.

Wednesday brought wind storms with gusts north of 60 mph, which knocked down 3,000 power lines in Southeast Michigan. A warmer than normal winter created softer ground, making it easier for trees to uproot and knock down more power lines.

The winds themselves made it tougher for crews to repair above-ground power lines. Despite DTE crews working 16-hour shifts, more help was needed and reinforcements were called in from Indiana, Kentucky, New York, Pennsylvania and*Tennessee...

Metro Detroit ‘in the bullseye’ for heavy rain

The forecast over the next few days seems the opposite of expectations for early May: cold, windy and unusually wet, with Metro Detroit center stage for rainfall.

A slow-moving low pressure system lifting across the Ohio Valley and eastern Great Lakes could spark prolonged, heavy rain across most of southeast Michigan — dumping totals as high as 3 inches by Friday night, the National Weather Service says.

The showers are set to start around midmorning Thursday then become “an all-day event,” said Alex Manion, a meteorologist with the weather service station in White Lake Township. “It will continue into the next day also. The Metro Detroit area is in the bullseye for the heaviest amount of rainfall.” ...

Peak Color for September 15, 2017

Ready or not fall is just around the corner! This year, it looks like we may see the fall colors earlier than normal. According to WNEM (Saginaw, MI) meteorologist, 2016 was a very warm and dry year and that postponed the changing of the leaves. This year we are not only cooler; but, we also saw a lot of rain in early summer.

Therefore, the main factor that points to an early peak of fall colors is our cooler temps. In the month of August, many Lower Peninsula communities saw several nights where temperatures fell into the 40s or even lower. Cold night-time temperatures are also a big factor when it comes to leaves changing colors. While it is still early, it looks like peak color will begin about a week to a few days before the average annual projections...

DH and I will make our annual fall trek to Mackinac Island next week. At this time of year, we usually don't see colorful foliage until the last quarter of the trip north on I-75 from north suburban Detroit (Oakland County). We heard from folks who were "up north" for Labor Day weekend that leaves were already turning color in Gaylord and Traverse City areas. We're looking forward to some spectaculars freeway views and lovely days on Mackinac Island.

Michigan’s fall color show closes quickly this year

Gaylord*—*Autumn’s yearly color extravaganza is finally here, but you’d better hurry or you might miss it.

Andy Sullivan, a meteorologist with the National Weather Service in Gaylord, has a simple explanation for Michigan’s later — and shorter — display this year.

“Blame it on the heat wave,” Sullivan said. “The heat wave we had in early September affected the color in a negative way. The heat stunted the colors and put the annual color show off by at least two weeks.”

As a result, “colors are muted and not as bright, with a lack of brilliant reds that we normally would see,” Sullivan said. And while temperatures have been mostly above normal this month, windy, cooler weather is expected next week, which should cause most of the leaves to fall, he said...
