Metro Detroit breaks seasonal snowfall record

Tom Greenwood/The Detroit News

Well it’s official: The cold season of 2013-14 is the snowiest on record for the metro area.

The 3.1 inches of snow that fell Monday night into Tuesday morning brought this season’s total to 94.8 inches, topping the old record of 93.6 inches set during 1880-81.

“I guess we could see it as a just reward for all of us after going through this winter,” said National Weather Service meteorologist Bryan Tilley, working out of the White Lake Township station...

Ice 3 Feet Deep Keeps Ferries From Mackinac As Grand Hotel Readies To Open

April 24, 2014 11:45 AM

By Christy Strawser, CBS Detroit

MACKINAC ISLAND (CBS Detroit) When it comes to visiting one of Michigan’s most popular tourist destinations, you — virtually — can’t get there from here.

Patches of ice 3 feet deep separate Mackinac Island from the mainland, leaving ferries no clear path.

And the venerable Grand Hotel opens for the season Friday.

“Right now, there are efforts to get the ferries going, there’s still ice in the Straits between St. Ignace and Mackinac, there are some efforts today to get some ice cutters in that area so that the ferries can start running,” said Tim Hygh, director of the Mackinac Island Convention and Visitors Bureau, on Thursday...

Metro Detroit's chilly spring to create perfect storm of pollen

Long, cold winter means trees, grass will release pollen at same time

Charles E. Ramirez/The Detroit News

Macomb Township— Metro Detroiters have survived the polar vortex. Now, a pollen vortex is on the way.

The long, harsh winter, experts say, likely will make for an intense start to the spring allergy season. It’s a perfect storm, said Tom Kines, senior meteorologist with weather forecasting service Accuweather in State College, Pa.

“We’re getting into one of those springs where a lot of things will be blooming at once,” he said. “If you’re an allergy sufferer, that’s probably not good news. You’re getting everything thrown at you at once.”

Since Old Man Winter overstayed his welcome this year and brought long stretches of sub-zero temperatures and record snowfall, the time when plants usually start blooming and pollinating has been delayed.

As a result, the periods when trees and grass release their pollen into the air likely will coincide, Kines said...

It's kind of funny that I started getting weather warning alerts Friday afternoon. We were being warned about a strong storm due for Sunday. The alerts ramped up Saturday afternoon, with cell phones, television, and radio all joining in. By late morning Sunday, the weather alert on my cell phone turned into a solid red triangle that remained on each screen.

So, late yesterday afternoon I had the kids help me round up flashlights, got extra batteries together, and placed candles with matchbooks in the vital areas of the house.

The storm rolled in about 6pm and we heard the crackle of thunder......ONCE. We were looking for the lightening strikes in the sky and listening for additional thunder (I love thunderstorms). I think we waited about seven minutes until the clouds began to dissipate and the sun began to peak through. Before I knew it, the red triangle on my phone was gone, the sun was out, and we were grilling.

The funny part was the three day work up to the seven minute storm that produced exactly one thunder roll. Disappointing, but kind of funny.

On another thought: How is it that we are forewarned about catastrophic global warming events decades in the future, but we can't figure out weather three days in advance? :floorlaugh:

I was all set to go to the gym and stop at the market on the way home. Suddenly, it got very dark with an ominous-looking western sky :scared: Next came rumbles of thunder, then it rained really hard for about 15 minutes. No more thunder, but it's still dark and drizzly. There's supposed to be a gap before the next round of storms later this afternoon, but I'm not venturing out until it's brighter and less threatening.

If there is severe weather in your area, please stay safe.
