One dead after twin tornadoes blast Nebraska

At least one person has died and scores more injured after two tornadoes struck in Nebraska on Monday.

One fatality has been brought into Faith Regional Medical Center in Norfolk and at least 15 people have been brought in with critical injuries, said Jacque Genovese, the hospital's director of marketing and public information officer for the weather incident. More of the injured were being brought in, Genovese said.

Severe weather blasts Nebraska, one fatality reported amid damage

(CNN) -- Nebraska was pummeled by a round of dangerous severe weather Monday with one fatality reported and the governor's office saying at least four towns had been hit hard.

Damage was reported Pilger, Wisner, Stanton and Pender, all in northeast Nebraska. The city of Pilger was closed to all but emergency personnel, according to the state's emergency management agency.
Sightings of a rare "double tornado" are also being reported, according to CNN meteorologist Chad Meyers.

Sanford Goshorn, the Stanton County, Nebraska, emergency manager, told CNN he couldn't confirm numbers of people injured after tornado-like winds hit the rural Nebraska county saying, "We're still digging people out."

how awful for those people

what's a cyclone? is that the same as a tornado? I saw this being called twin tornadoes and also a cyclone

They were just talking about this on CNN, expecting more tonight. That would be even more scary to me at night. Like when the hurricanes come in the dark here.

The tiny northeast Nebraska town of Pilger was digging out from tragedy Tuesday, a day after at least two people were killed and dozens more were injured when tornadoes roared through parts of the state.

All the residents of Pilger — the town's website claims a population of 378 — evacuated their homes, many leaving for shelters in nearby towns.

So scary, this is about an hour northeast of me. In typical Nebraska fashion, we didn't even get rain here. One of the fatalities was a 6 year old girl, her mom was taken to an Omaha hospital. Such a tragic reminder to never take anything for granted...

Severe weather rolls into Metro Detroit; 47K without power

Tom Greenwood/The Detroit News

There was no need for alarm clocks this morning.

Mother Nature gave southeastern Michigan a major wake-up call starting at about 4 a.m. Wednesday when a series of massive storms brought with cannonades of thunder and the kind of spidery lightning usually only seen in summer camp slasher flicks.

The storms left about 27,000 homes and businesses without power, according to DTE Energy Co. with the outages scattered across the metro area. Meanwhile, 20,000 Consumers Energy customers are without power in southeastern Michigan.

Metro Detroit’s freeways and surface streets had stretches of flooding slowing morning commutes (Click here for latest road conditions).

“The thunderstorms will be off and on the rest of the morning and possibly into the afternoon,” National Weather Service meteorologist Steve Considine said. “They’ll be of the same intensity as the storms that came in early this morning with lots of thunder, lightning, hail and winds possibly gusting from 40 to 60 mph.” ...

Power Outage At Detroit Metro Airport Causes Huge Delays

June 18, 2014 8:35 AM

ROMULUS (WWJ) - A power outage, coupled with stormy weather, caused massive delays at Detroit Metropolitan Airport Wednesday morning.

Airport spokesperson Mike Conway said the power went out at the North Terminal around 3:30 a.m., and electricians quickly went to work to identify the problem.

Reporting live from the scene, WWJ’s Sean Lee said the outage caused a large backup at the security gate, where all travelers were told to wait in line...

Oh No, I have to disagree, your Show Me mosquitoes are nasty. The 1st time I visited relatives ( many yrs ago, in the 7th grade) I was bitten so bad, they swelled up hugh. My aunt said it happened to her the 1st yr when they moved down there. Your mosquitoes suck! But your state is beautiful (Lake of the Ozarks).

Double tornadoes in Neb. right now, never seen that before.

Yep our mosquitoes suck, no pun intended. The ones in our area of the state tend to be small. The Ozark mosquitoes are bigger, but the biggest ones I've seen were in Michigan.

Severe thunderstorms packing high winds knock down trees in Michigan; thousands without power

DTE Energy says 140,000 customers without power in southeast Michigan

Published On: Jul 01 2014 06:36:06 AM EDT Updated On: Jul 01 2014 08:02:03 AM EDT

WIXOM, Mich. -
Severe thunderstorms packing high winds knocked down trees and power lines across parts of Michigan, leaving tens of thousands of people without power and injuring a firefighter.

DTE Energy says it had about 140,000 outages at homes and businesses early Tuesday, but that number could grow...

...Consumers Energy says it had more than 18,000 outages. Some road flooding is reported in southeastern Michigan following heavy rain...

http://www.clickondetroit.com/weath...-in-michigan-thousands-without-power/26740180

Storms in my neck of the woods were pretty intense overnight. Lots of lightning, thunder, heavy rain. We didn't lose power, but I got an email alert from my gym about the power being out there.

Last night's storms were nowhere near as bad as the torrential rain that we drove through on our way home from Mackinac Island on Sunday. At times it was raining so hard that we couldn't see cars in front of us  The heavy rain lasted for about 45 minutes, then it was smooth sailing for the remainder of the 4-hour drive.
