Winter Storm Atlas Kills Thousands of Cattle in South Dakota

http://www.wunderground.com/news/winter-storm-atlas-kills-thousands-cattle-south-dakota-20131007

PIERRE, S.D. -- A record-breaking storm that dumped 4 feet of snow in parts of western South Dakota left ranchers dealing with heavy losses, in some cases perhaps up to half their herds, as they assess how many of their cattle died during the unseasonably early blizzard.......

Cammack said cattle were soaked by 12 hours of rain early in the storm, so many were unable to survive an additional 48 hours of snow and winds up to 60 mph.

"It's the worst early season snowstorm I've seen in my lifetime," said Cammack, 60........

Almost all the calves are gone; it is sad to think that a week ago they were grazing in the hills and then the storm hit them. They were so cute to see, keeping up with their mamas, sometimes trotting to stay right next to them. Calves are the cutest thing.

South Dakota officials are taking steps to have livestock killed by last weekend's blizzard removed from state highways. State Veterinarian Dustin Oedekoven says the state has contracted with a rendering service to clear livestock carcasses from state highways and ditches in western South Dakota.

Wet and windy Halloween

Rain moves through the area for much of the day

DETROIT (Mich) -
Radar this Thursday morning shows a huge slug of water pumping into SE Michigan for most of our Halloween.

The roads are slick and ponding which will slow down the morning commute. Expect rain most of today with mild temps in the mid 60s. The computer models and radar both show gaps in the rain which means we may see a few dry periods today...

ALERT! TORNADO OUTBREAK LIKELY TODAY!

Hopefully you have heard by now that there will be a dangerous severe weather outbreak today. This event should not be taken lightly, and not taking action once warnings are issued is irresponsible and could result in injury or death.

Today's severe weather setup is something we see once every 5 to 10 years.

The tornadic threat is high

The damaging wind threat is very high

For the sake of damage and injury potential from today's system, we hope we are wrong, but unfortunately it does not look like we are. This has the potential to be a historic event in weather history..

PUBLIC SEVERE WEATHER OUTLOOK NWS STORM PREDICTION CENTER NORMAN OK 0249 AM CST SUN NOV 17 2013 ...SEVERE THUNDERSTORMS EXPECTED OVER PARTS OF THE MID-MISSISSIPPI AND OHIO VALLEYS INTO MICHIGAN TODAY THROUGH EARLY TONIGHT... The NWS Storm Prediction Center in Norman, Oklahoma is forecasting the development of a few strong, long-track tornadoes over parts of the Mid-Mississippi and Ohio Valleys into Michigan today through early tonight. The areas most likely to experience this activity include: Illinois Indiana Northern and Western Kentucky Lower Michigan Ohio Southeast Wisconsin Surrounding this greatest risk region, severe thunderstorms will also be possible from parts of Wisconsin, Iowa, Missouri, Arkansas, Mississippi, Alabama, and Tennessee northeastward across much of the Appalachians to the lower Great Lakes. A potent jet stream disturbance with wind speeds in excess of 120 knots will sweep east across the central Plains today and across the Ohio Valley and northern half of the Appalachians tonight. As this occurs, a surface low now over the mid-Mississippi Valley will rapidly intensify and accelerate northeastward, reaching northern Michigan early tonight and western Quebec Monday morning. East of the low, increasingly warm and humid air at the surface will spread north across the Tennessee and Ohio Valleys, contributing to very unstable conditions over a large part of the east central United States. Coupled with daytime heating and ascent provided the jet stream impulse, the environment will become very favorable for severe thunderstorms --- especially along and ahead of fast-moving cold front trailing southward from the low into the mid-Mississippi and Ohio Valleys. Given the degree of thermodynamic instability, and the strength and character of the winds through the depth of the atmosphere, many of the storms will become supercells. Some of these will be capable of producing strong tornadoes --- in addition to large hail and swaths of damaging surface winds. The storms are expected to consolidate into one or two extensive lines later today into tonight --- extending the threat for damaging winds and isolated tornadoes eastward into the Appalachians by early Monday. State and local emergency managers are monitoring this potentially very dangerous situation. Those in the threatened area are urged to review severe weather safety rules and to listen to radio, television, and NOAA Weather Radio for possible watches, warnings, and statements later today.

Midwest under high storm threat

DON BABWIN, AP

CHICAGO (AP) — A number of Midwestern states woke up Sunday to the threat of intense thunderstorms and even tornados, with officials raising concerns that people — including fans heading to some NFL games — might be caught off guard by such severe weather at this time of year.

"People can fall into complacency because they don't see severe weather and tornados, but we do stress that they should keep a vigilant eye on the weather and have a means to hear a tornado warning because things can change very quickly," said Matt Friedlein, a meteorologist with the National Weather Service...
