The state of Minnesota reported 24 new deaths Saturday related to COVID-19, the highly contagious disease caused by the novel coronavirus, bringing the total number of known fatalities to 558.
Of the new deaths, 16 involved residents of long-term care facilities. Two patients were in their 50s and two were over the age of 100, with the rest falling in between.
On Saturday the state Department of Health reported 702 new laboratory-confirmed infections, down from 723 new cases the day before. To date, 10,790 Minnesota residents have been confirmed to have the virus, though 6,322 are no longer in isolation.
Those results are based on nearly 5,000 new tests, bringing the total number of tests to date to 106,263.
The number of COVID patients in intensive care was reported at 180, down from 198 the day before. There were 296 additional patients reported hospitalized, up from 275 the day before.
Gov. Tim Walz and state public health officials said this week that the state has the capacity to test up to 10,000 people a day for the virus, mostly through private health networks, but only roughly 4,000 people per day were coming forward last week.
