JACKSONVILLE, N.C. — A missing 20-year-old Marine due to give birth any day is dead and a senior officer accused of raping her is a suspect, a North Carolina sheriff said Friday.
The body of Maria Lauterbach, who vanished last month before she was to testify in a military probe, was located in a shallow grave Friday morning, said OnslowCounty Sheriff Ed Brown at a press conference.
Lauterbach alleged that she was sexually assaulted by a senior officer but that the investigation had gone sour, according to court documents.
A witness came forward to tell authorities where Lauterbach’s body was buried, Brown said. Brown wouldn't comment on cause of death.

I don't know if this girl had mental or emotional problems, but even if she did that would just make her a more likely target for an abuser or criminal. People who victimize are skilled at finding a victim who is more vulnerable and less likely to be believed. That is how they get away with their crimes. Anyone who is impared, very young, very old, or has legal problems of their own is most vulnerable.Stepmonster did not help by emphasizing the bi-polar- liar accusation, true or not. It think this type of victim bashing helped to lend credibility to the real monster in this case...the suspect.

According to the news conference, the body has not been recovered yet.

Well, ABC News and CNN are still saying that her body has not yet been located. I don't know where Fox is gettiing their info - Fox is either leading the pack, or reporting something that isn't true. Who knows.

They have to have it wrong. The sheriff did NOT say her body had been located. They just have "evidence" supposedly that she is dead and buried. The Marines are helping in the search of the site where they think she has been buried.

From what I remember of J'ville when I was a kid, Gum Branch road had a lot of woody areas where it would be easy to dispose of a body. The grave must be quite shallow if the ground is frozen and too hard to dig in it.

The way the NCIS and LE have handled this case is shameful ! I can imagine Nancy Grace's opinions tonight . :banghead:

This suspect must have been well-informed about the investigation. He waits to bolt until the wee hours of this morning; the very day that someone tips cops to the location of the grave? Sounds like someone tipped him off that now was the time to make a run for the border.Susan
