Victim was always "willing to help others," neighbor says​

A neighbor of Alex Jeffrey Pretti, the man shot and killed by a federal agent, says he "would always be willing to help others."

"I didn't know Alex super well, but he was a great guy and neighbor," she said. "He loved his car and took very good care of it. He used to have a dog who passed around a year or two ago, I think. I remember how sweet it was that, as his dog was more elderly, less mobile, he'd be willing to carry him down to the yard to get some fresh air and to enjoy the outdoors. His dog would lay down and Alex would sit with him and pet him for long periods of time. He was very caring, you could tell. We are all heartbroken and are praying for his family and friends and for justice for him."

One of Donald Trump’s top advisers, and the architect of his immigration policy, Stephen Miller wrote on social media that Alex Pretti, the 37-year-old who was killed by a federal immigration agent was “an assassin” who “tried to murder federal law enforcement”.

A reminder that border patrol official, Gregory Bovino, said that the man who was killed was armed and approached officers attempting to arrest a person who entered the US illegally. Bovino said an officer shot the US citizen in self-defense. However, bystander video footage of the incident contradicts officials’ assessment.

CNN a little earlier aired an interview with a man called Nilson Barahona, who was in a donut shop outside of which Alex Pretti was shot dead by a federal agent this morning.

Barahona, who was on the verge of tears, told the cable news network that was he saw was federal immigration enforcement officers try to apprehend a man who then went into a business and locked the door out of their reach.

A woman who was protesting against the federal officers was being pulled by them and a man, who later turned out to be Pretti, went to her assistance, Barahona further said, as reported by CNN.

The officers then turned on the man and it ended in a confrontation where he, Pretti, was shot dead, with Barahona telling CNN that he didn’t see Pretti holding or reaching for his gun (which he was legally entitled to own and carry in Minneapolis, according to the local authorities), contrary to what the federal government has said.

Minneapolis Mayor Jacob Frey has just been speaking to reporters about today's shooting.

He tells reporters he has formally requested assistance from the National Guard to support officers in the Minneapolis police department.

He says the community is tired, and additional support is necessary. He goes on to say he understands people are angry and experiencing trauma.

"This has been ongoing now for weeks," he says, adding that it is only "our city that will suffer if there is damage or destruction".

In the last few moments, US Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem has been speaking about the shooting in Minneapolis.

She says the man who was shot had a criminal history, which she claims included domestic assault with intention to inflict bodily harm, disorderly conduct and driving without a valid license.

She says the man approached federal agents with 9mm semi-automatic handgun, and officers attempted to disarm him. Noem says he then "reacted violently".

One officer then fired "defensive shots", she says, adding that he feared for both his and other officer's lives.

The man was then pronounced dead at scene, she says.

She adds that the man had two magazines with ammunition in them, containing dozens of realms.

Noem tells local officials to 'take a long, hard look in the mirror'​

More now from Noem, who says law enforcement are doing "everything they can" to protect the public, and offered prayers for the man killed in today's shooting, Alex Pretti.

"We also recognise that the Minnesota Governor and the Minneapolis mayor need to take a long, hard look in the mirror," she added.

She made two requests of state and local authorities, asking that they turn over "dangerous" criminals that they release from their jails "so we can get them out of this country as soon as possible", adding that there had been 490 cases where this hadn't happened.

Secondly, she asks that they "help us keep people safe", which she said Minneapolis authorities had refused to do.
