"Brooklyn Center police said in a statement that officers had stopped a motorist shortly before 2 p.m. Sunday. After determining the driver had an outstanding warrant, police tried to arrest the driver. The driver reentered the vehicle and an officer fired at the vehicle, striking the driver, police said. The vehicle traveled several blocks before striking another vehicle."

Man shot, killed during Minnesota traffic stop sparks unrest

Sounds like he was pulled over, then it was discovered he had an outstanding warrant. Allegedly the warrant was for a traffic violation, and it wasn't clear if Daunte knew there was a warrant. I can't find that article again, so I will MOO for now. (I think it was in a local report.)

According to this I see DW as having (2) petty misdemeanor's on his record in Minnesota. Things aren't added up.

@Tippy Lynn , would it say if there was an outsanding warrant on that link? Am I reading that right? Two misdemeanors from 2019?

It usually states if there's a warrant. Looks like there was a warrant issued, served and returned in December 2019 for failing to appear and bail was posted as well. There was a plea agreement and he was convicted for this charge in February 2020. I don't see an active or outstanding warrant.

Yes, both misdemeanors are from July 2019.

Thanks for the explanation, @Tippy Lynn.

This is not looking good for LE.

Again.

Maybe it's time America dispenses with the criminality associated with personal weed use. It would free up the courts and not be a petty crime that could affect a person's future endeavors. I can't figure out the second charge. Was he playing loud music, yelling or what? At that age a more effective punishment would be making them pick up dog poop in a public park.

Me too. I think we're missing a few crucial chunks of information. What we do know doesn't make sense.

The only thing "open" here seems to be money collections for his fees.

I don't get it.

That's where I am too Tippy. There seems to be lots of conflicting reports already. Hoping they release more info today, or just release the dang cam footage so everyone knows what happened.

After reading/searching last night, my understanding is that he was pulled over, it was found that he had a warrant, they tried to arrest him, and he 'fled' or got back into his car, the officer shoots, Wright was able to drive a few blocks, came to a stop when hitting another car.

Brooklyn Center police shot and killed a 20-year-old man after a traffic stop Sunday, sparking protests and unrest amid already heightened tensions.

Daunte Wright, who was identified by family members, was stopped by police at around 2 p.m. as he was driving in a residential neighborhood. Brooklyn Center police said in a statement that officers discovered “an outstanding warrant” and tried to take him into custody, when he got back into his car. An officer shot Wright, who managed to drive off but crashed into another vehicle several blocks away. He was declared dead at the scene.

Fatal police shooting in Brooklyn Center sparks unrest

Katie Wright, his mother, described hearing her son talk with police over the phone during the stop, and someone telling her son not to run. She also said after being disconnected, she managed to talk with Wright’s girlfriend who was a passenger in the car.

When an officer demanded the phone be shut off, Katie Wright said she called 911 to try to find out the couple’s location. The girlfriend, who has not been named, was taken to a hospital with what police called non-life-threatening injuries.

Unpaid fines on a couple petty misdemeanors with a total of less than $300.

I don't see an active or outstanding warrant.

I don't get it either.

I wonder if there was someone connected to the car registration/plate who had a warrant, but it wasn't Daunte??

Or a warrant that is so recent it's not in the system - how long does that take?

We wait for info.....

That could be? From what I've read in MSM it sounds like his mother gifted the car he was driving to him two weeks ago. He made a phone call to his mother when he was getting pulled over to ask her about insurance information.

Court records show Wright was being sought for fleeing from law enforcement officers and for possessing a gun without a permit during an encounter with Minneapolis police in June. In that case, a statement of probable cause said police got a call about a man waving a gun who was later identified as Wright.

If the officer yesterday knew about the previous gun issue, that might explain why he/she was extra concerned when Wright returned to the vehicle IMO.

That's conjecture at this point though, and I await more facts.

So sad :(
